The Effect of CrossFit Kids on Social Skills in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (CrossFit KAMP)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 59 U.S. children have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Peer relationships, social skills, and repetitive behaviors are a challenge for those with ASD. Exercise in the ASD population has been examined as a means to improve some of these challenges for children with ASD. This research study will try to see if a structured exercise program called CrossFit Kids can help with these challenges. This study is potentially beneficial in developing an exercise program for children with ASD that can help promote social skill development, reduce stereotypical behaviors, and provide overall health benefits.

Repair by Rehabilitation of Pelvic Floor Lesions After Vaginal Delivery Identified by Transperineal Ultrasound 3/4 D

SUMMARY: (Objective, design, scope of the study, subjects of study, instrumentation, results, conclusions) Objectives: To evaluate if the physiotherapy treatment in pelvic floor dysfunctions, identified by transperineal ultrasound 3 / 4D, in postpartum improve the tone and functionality of pelvic floor. Design: Post-authorization, prospective, longitudinal randomized intervention study Scope: Full-term deliveries at the University Hospital. Subjects of study: Full-term primiparous and full-term pregnancies with pelvic floor lesion, identified by transperineal ultrasound 3 / 4D, which are randomized between the physiotherapy treatment of pelvic floor and the non-work. Variables: Primary variable: Assess the improvement in contractility / tone, evaluation by manometry and assess the anatomical improvement of the area of ?? the genital hiatus, stay by transperineal ultrasound 3 / 4D. Secondary variables: Identify the levator ani muscle injury rate, estimate the sonographic changes in the levator ani muscle through rehabilitation. Analyze the improvement of the symptoms associated with the public organic prolapse and evaluate the improvement of the quality of life. Data analysis: To detect a difference of 10% in the reduction of the size of the index between the study groups (not intervened / intervened) after 6 months of intervention, standard deviation 10%, Error-alpha 5%, Error- beta 10% (P90%) we need 23 women in each group. Assuming a loss of 10% in the follow-up, the final size would be 52 women, 26 per group.

An Online CBT, Mindfulness Meditation & Yoga (CBT-MY) Intervention for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a chronic, debilitating condition, is a growing public health concern as the Canadian population has the highest PTSD prevalence worldwide (9.2%; 3.7 million people). PTSD is linked with other comorbid mental health disorders (e.g., depression) and increased risk of chronic disease (e.g., cardiovascular disease, obesity) which presents challenges as far as selection of the appropriate treatment approach. Adjunctive treatment approaches for PTSD that include somatic-sensory body awareness (e.g., mindfulness, yoga) have been shown to be viable treatment options to reduce stress-related symptoms and enhance emotion regulation. Online treatment delivery for mental health disorders demonstrate similar reductions in self-reported symptoms as face-to-face methods and emphasize accessibility, reduced costs, and enhanced appeal to certain demographic groups. A target population at risk of untreated PTSD symptoms that may benefit from an online treatment is young adults, 18-34 yrs., who have experienced childhood trauma. No known clinical trial (CT) has addressed the effectiveness of a brief (8-week) online trauma-informed yoga intervention using both self-report and objective psychophysiology measures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate changes in self-reported PTSD symptoms and objectively measured biomarkers of autonomic regulation via pupil dilation and heart-rate-variability (HRV) following an 8-week single-arm experimental design. It is hypothesized that clinically significant reductions of: 1) PTSD total symptom severity by 10% and 2) significant reductions in pupil dilation at post-intervention and; 3) significant increases in HRV at post-intervention. This is the first study to examine objective markers of autonomic regulation among an at-risk population using multiple novel technologies (e.g., Eye Tracking Glasses, HRV) and comparing two theoretically-linked measures (e.g., HRV, Pupillometry). Comparisons of psychophysiology data with a cross-sectional convenience sample with no history of clinical PTSD or mental health conditions were made.

The investigators propose to lay the groundwork for a larger effectiveness clinical trial that will lead to the advancement of a novel evidence-based treatment for DUD and HIV among Spanish-speaking Latinos who suffer from self-stigma and have inadequate treatment adherence. This pilot project aims to: compare the outcomes of a culturally adapted CBT-based intervention to treatment as usual (TAU), in a randomized pilot trial of HIV+ individuals with a lifetime DUD.

The Healthy Patterns Sleep Study

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)

Ideal interventions for the older aged population would be those that are easily accessible and associated with minimal burden on family members, the healthcare system and the individuals themselves. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) therapy and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) are two interventions that may be effective in targeting cognitive deficits in individuals with anxiety, depression, and/or cognitive complaints. MBSR has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression and improve cognition and tDCS has been shown to improve cognition in the older aged population. The effectiveness of these two interventions combined to elicit changes in cognition has yet to be demonstrated. Therefore, the overall aim of the current research is to evaluate the efficacy of a combination of MBSR and tDCS to improve cognitive function in individuals with cognitive complaints and symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. This will be a randomized pilot study. Sixteen individuals (separated into 2 groups of 8) will be randomized to receive a combination MBSR + active tDCS or MBSR + sham tDCS over 8 weeks. Participants will visit the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) once per week for in-class group sessions and will complete the intervention daily at home for the duration of the study. Participants will be aged 60 and older with cognitive complaints, with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. Participants will be trained to self-administer tDCS and given guidelines for the completion of daily MBSR activities at home. It is hypothesized that the combination of active tDCS + MBSR will enhance cognition compared to the combination of sham tDCS + MBSR.
