Amplification of Positivity for Alcohol Use Disorder Co-Occurring With Anxiety or Depression

The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of a protocol in which individuals with comorbid depression or anxiety disorders and alcohol use disorder will be randomized to complete Amplification of Positivity for Alcohol Use Disorder (AMP-A)- a psychological treatment focused on increasing positive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors- or a traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention. Assessed outcomes will include participant acceptability and completion rates, participant compliance with the intervention, positive and negative affect, substance use- and depression and anxiety-related symptom severity, and functional disability.

Convergent and Concurrent Validity Between Clinical Recovery and Personal-civic Recovery in Mental Health

Several instruments have been developed by clinicians and academics specialized in mental health and psychiatry to assess clinical recovery in terms of symptom reduction. Based on their life narratives, measurement tools have also been developed and validated through participatory research programs by persons living with mental health problems or illnesses to assess a more personal experience of recovery as a way of leaving a meaningful and satisfying life despite and beyond ongoing disorders and symptoms of mental illness. Other instruments have also been developed to assess the degree to which mental health and psychiatric institutions are recovery-oriented. The overall aim of this project is to explore correlations between clinical recovery, personal recovery and this latter organizational recovery.

Stress, Anxiety, and Mood Group Therapy

The purpose of this study is to identify cognitive mechanisms that might facilitate treatment response for individuals experiencing depression and/or anxiety. The Stress, Anxiety, and Mood group helps individuals experiencing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and mood by providing concrete coping skills to regulate emotions, to let go of negative thoughts, and build courage to talk to others about tough topics. Groups meet for 8 weeks, with sessions lasting 90 minutes each. In addition to group therapy, you will be asked to complete some computerized and paper and pencil-based tasks. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a life-long neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by qualitative abnormalities in reciprocal social interactions and patterns of communication, and by a restricted, stereotyped, repetitive repertoire of interests and activities. The use of medications in adolescents and young adults with ASD is extremely common. However, few data address the effectiveness and harms of medications specifically in this population. The purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy and safety of intranasal ketamine with dexmedetomidine in children with ASD.

Smartphone-enabled Health Coaching Intervention for Youth Diagnosed With Major Depressive Disorders

Randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing youth diagnosed with major depressive disorder treated with online mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural therapy vs. standard psychiatric care (as wait-list controls). Eligible subjects will be recruited from the wait-lists of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. N = 168 subjects will consist of youth from First Nations background (18-30 yrs) and youth from all other ethnic backgrounds stratified to two intervention groups and two wait-list control groups consisting of 50% First Nations youth and 50% youth of all other ethnic backgrounds.

Magnetically Enhanced Diffusion for Acute Ischaemic Stroke (MEDIS) Trial

The objective of the MEDIS study is to determine if subjects experiencing an Acute Ischaemic Stroke due to large vessel occlusion, treated with IV tPA combined with the MED procedure have a greater likelihood of recanalisation 30-90 minutes after the completion of tPA infusion than subjects treated with IV tPA (plus sham device). Safety of the MED System Procedure will be evaluated by the incidence of symptomatic PH-2 haemorrhagic transformation within 24 hours following the procedure. Lastly, a health economics study will be conducted to estimate health care costs for each treatment.

Predictors of Treatment Response in Late-onset Major Depressive Disorder

Depression is a common disorder, especially in old age, where it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This study will investigate whether there are features of individual patients with major depression that may predict positive treatment response. The study will invite 40 patients who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder with onset after the age of 60 years to participate. Participants will be recruited from the Mental Health of Older Adults services at the South London and Maudsley NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust. Participants will receive usual treatment as set out in standard Care Pathways, used by the clinical care team. As part of the study, they will undergo a short battery of neuropsychological tests and a standard MRI brain imaging protocol. The neuropsychological tests and assessment of depression severity will be carried out twice (at Baseline and Week 12). Data will be analysed to investigate whether there are features specific to those patients who show a good response to antidepressant treatment after 12 weeks. Identification of such predictors may help to stratify treatment approaches in the future and lead to the early identification of individual patients who may require alternative treatment approaches to standard antidepressants.
