Predicting Successful Outcome of Interdisciplinary Biopsychosocial Rehabilitation in Osteoarthritis

The goal of this prospective study is to identify variables that can predict whether an interdisciplinary biopsychosocial intervention for patients with osteoarthritis will be successful. Using an observational design, patients admitted to this program during the 3-year period (2019-2021) will be included and data gathered during routine clinical practice at baseline and end of treatment of patients who gave informed consent, will be used. With these data a prediction model will be build and internal validation with bootstrapping will be done.

Physical Activity and Social Engagement for Persons With Disabilities in an Underserved Community

Using a community-based participatory approach, this project aims to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of two technology-driven group activity programs on socioemotional health and physical activity in a local underserved community, Tarrant, Alabama. Participants will complete two six-week programs, specifically Lakeshore Online Fitness (Online) and Get Active with Virtual Reality (VR).

Hand Rehabilitation Study for Stroke Patients

The purpose of this study is to find out what are the best settings for applying electrical nerve stimulation over the skin for the short-term improvement of hand dysfunction after a stroke. The ultimate goal is to some day design an effective long-term training program to help someone recovery their ability to use their hands and function independently at home and in society. In order to know how to apply electrical nerve stimulation to produce a good long-term effect on hand dysfunction, we first need to know how to make it work best in the short-term, and improve our understanding of for whom it works and how it works.We will use a commercially available transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit to gently apply electrical nerve stimulation over the skin of the affected arm. This is a portable, safe and easy to use device designed for patients to operate in their homes.

Measuring Outcomes of Activity in Intensive Care

Millions of older adults are hospitalized for a critical illness each year and although they are more likely than ever to survive this illness, they commonly face significant morbidity in the form of disabilities in basic self-care activities and in mobility in the months and years afterwards. A better understanding of the underlying risk factors for disability following critical illness is greatly needed, including the effect that activity during hospitalization may have on these outcomes. Therefore, we designed the Measuring OutcomeS of Activity in Intensive Care (MOSAIC) observational study to evaluate the relationship between activity (measured more rigorously than in prior investigations) and disability, physical function, and cognitive function in survivors of critical illness 3 and 12 months after ICU discharge.
