NCT ID: NCT02462057 Completed - Diabetes Clinical Trials

Testing Different Messaging Approaches to Increase Activation of a HealthyFood Benefit in Adults With Diabetes

Start date: June 2015
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The Vitality HealthyFood benefit is a three-tiered incentive program designed to encourage healthier food choices amongst members of Discovery Health's Vitality program. Once enrolled in the benefit, participating members can receive 10%, 15%, or 25% cash-back on the healthy foods they purchase at selected grocers. And, while overall enrollment in the program is high, there is particular interest in increasing enrollment in the benefit amongst Vitality members with diabetes. One presumed barrier to enrollment in the benefit amongst members with diabetes is a misperception of the particular relevance of the benefit and healthier food choices for their personal health. Improved messaging regarding the HealthyFood benefit and its particular salience for individuals with diabetes may be an effective means of increasing activation of the benefit in this population. The proposed study will be a collaboration between Discovery Health/Vitality and researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In the proposed RCT, Vitality members with diabetes will be randomised to different types of messages regarding the HealthyFood benefit. The investigators will then compare the effectiveness of these different messaging strategies at increasing activation of the HealthyFood benefit amongst Vitality members with diabetes.

An Adipocyte-Driven Mechanism For Weight Regain After Weight Loss: The Yo-Yo Effect

ADIPOSTRESS
Start date: March 2012
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Almost half of the Dutch population is currently characterized by overweight and obesity. Losing weight is not the problem in obesity treatment, it is the seemingly obligatory weight regain after weight loss: the yoyo-effect. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the association between the weight-loss-induced cellular stress response and the rate of weight regain. The secondary objective is to investigate the differences in cellular stress response and weight regain after rapid and slow weight loss. To investigate this, subjects will receive meal replacements replacing either all or part of the daily meals during the intervention period. THe first group will consume 500 kcal/d diet for 5 weeks while the second group consumes a 1250 kcal/d diet for 3 months, both followed by 1 week normalization and a 2 week strict weight maintenance diet. During the 9-month follow-up period subjects will receive dietary advice according to the Dutch recommendations for healthy eating. The association between the amount of weight regain after the weight loss period and changes in adipokines, parameters of adipocyte metabolism, in vivo adipose tissue metabolism, adipocyte extracellular matrix gene expression profiles, adipocyte stress protein expression and gene polymorphisms in selected genes.

The Value of Our Health

Start date: October 2011
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

El Valor de Nuestra Salud [The Value of Our Health] is a 5-year study (2010-2014) involving grocery stores in San Diego County funded by the National Cancer Institute. The purpose of the study is to determine whether an in-store program can promote healthy foods through grocery stores. Sixteen stores in San Diego County will participate in El Valor de Nuestra Salud. The stores that participate in this study will be randomly assigned to either the intervention (program and evaluation) or control (evaluation only) group. We will test various strategies to promote healthy food shopping among customers of small-to-medium size Latino/Hispanic grocery stores. These strategies include changes to the store environment, food marketing efforts, and training of sales associates. Our evaluation protocol will determine whether the project is successful at improving aspects of the store and the employees, as well as whether customers shop for and eat healthier food products. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of the El Valor de Nuestra Salud intervention on consumption of fruits and vegetables among store customers.

Food Patterns, Inflammation Markers of Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Incidence of CVD

Start date: March 1991
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

Health outcome studies should examine food patterns, because foods are consumed together and nutrients are metabolized jointly. To examine associations between food patterns and markers of systemic and vascular inflammation at baseline, in a population-based cohort in Malmö, Sweden, and after 13 years of follow-up food pattern associations with CVD incidence.
