The primary objectives of this application are to 1) investigate the effect of increased daily consumption of the Keto5 XOGenius beverage on outcomes associated with elevated risk for various neurocognitive and pathophysiological conditions/diseases. And 2) to investigate the effect of daily consumption of the Keto5 XOGenius beverage on the following variables: waist circumference, body weight, and body mass index (BMI).
The overall research objective of this proposal is to determine the impact of increased daily peanut consumption on indices of neurocognitive and physiological health in BL individuals
The goal of this randomized controlled trial is to determine the impact of Mediterranean-Dash Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet and aerobic training on cognition in Black adults with high systolic blood pressure. Researchers will compare Food Delivery and Cooking PLUS Aerobic Training (FoRKS+) versus Enhanced Usual Care (EUC) to evaluate the effects on cognition. Participants will complete cognitive and cardiovascular assessments, 24-hr blood pressure monitoring, standard blood pressure measurements, weight, fingerstick for HbA1c point-of-care testing, and questionnaires. Participants may also choose to participate in an optional blood draw for DNA Repair Capacity testing as a modifiable risk factor for aging-associated diseases.
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious mental disorder occurring mainly in women. AN is characterized by severely restricted food-intake and subsequent low weight. The disease burden for the individual is high with medical complications and psychiatric comorbidities. Despite decades of research, there are large gaps in the understanding of the biological aspects of AN and lack of effective interventions. Current clinical treatment is associated with gastrointestinal problems, high rates of relapse and poor outcome causing long-term sickness absence and disability. During the COVID19 pandemic the prevalence and severity of AN has spiked. Therefore, there is great need of novel strategies for AN treatment, that can be easily implemented in the clinic without adding complexity to the standard care of treatment. During the resent years it has been proposed that mental disorders might be treated via manipulating the composition and function of the microbes that live in the gut (the microbiota) by adding or restricting fermentable nutrients (prebiotics) in the diet. However, in order to use prebiotics to treat the microbiota in AN patients, more knowledge is needed on how the AN microbiota is affected by the current standard care treatment. Whether prebiotics can be useful for normalizing AN microbiota remains to be established. The overall aim of the "Norwegian study of Microbiota in Anorexia Nervosa" (NORMA) is to join forces of researchers, clinical health care services and voluntary sector in a transdiciplinary approach to improve the understanding of the role of the gut microbiota in AN patients. The current project will include a clinical trial in AN patients and experimental studies to screen novel prebiotics for their ability to modify and normalize AN derived microbiota. The long-term goal of the project is to pave the way for a targeted and clinically feasible individualized treatment for better tolerable weight-restoration and improved health in AN patients.
Although some studies have focused on the role of exercise on inflammation and cytokine expression in cancer patients undergoing treatment and survivors, to our knowledge none have investigated the effect of exercise during neoadjuvant treatment as a complementary therapy to 1) modulate inflammation which may have a positive influence on chemotherapy response and 2) preserve or improve skeletal muscle, thus preventing cancer cachexia. Furthermore, we believe that the neoadjuvant treatment period could be a window of opportunity to optimize patient's nutritional status before surgery, which until now has been under used. Bearing in mind that nutritional interventions may also influence IL-6, our hypothesis is that a Combined Exercise and Dietary Intervention (CEDI) may induce positive alterations in cytokine profile and increase NK cell infiltration of the tumor in gastric and pancreatic cancer patients submitted to neo-adjuvant therapy.
Generation Victoria (GenV) is a longitudinal, population-based study of Victorian children and their parents that will bring together data on a wide range of conditions, exposures and outcomes. GenV blends study-collected, study-enhanced and linked data. It will be multi-purpose, supporting observational, interventional, health services and policy research within the same cohort. It is designed to address physical, mental and social issues experienced during childhood, as well as the antecedents of a wide range of diseases of ageing. It seeks to generate translatable evidence (prediction, prevention, treatments, services) to improve future wellbeing and reduce the future disease burden of children and adults. The GenV Cohort 2020s is open to all babies born over a two-year period, and their parents, residing in the state of Victoria Australia. The GenV Cohort 2020s is preceded by an Advance Cohort of babies born between 5 Dec 2020 and 3 October 2021, and their parents. This comprises all families recruited at GenV's Vanguard hospital (Joan Kirner Women's and Children's) and at birthing hospitals throughout Victoria as GenV scaled up to commence recruiting for the GenV Cohort 2020s. The Advance Cohort have ongoing and full participation in GenV for their lifetime unless they withdraw but may have less complete data and biosamples.
Acute pancreatitis is among the most common gastroenterology diagnosis in the United States, and represents a large economic burden to the United States health system. While recent guidelines agree early feeding shortens length of stay, these guidelines fail to provide recommendations on optimal diet to start leaving diet type to clinician discretion. Therefore, the aim is to assess the comparative efficacy of full calorie regular diet (RD) versus clear liquid diet (CLD) on length of hospital stay (LOHS) for mild to moderate acute pancreatitis (AP). The study population will target mild to moderate acute pancreatitis patients who can tolerate eating in a single institution. The primary end point will focus on LOHS, and secondary end points will include Pancreatic Activity Scoring System, side effects and readmission.
MB-College (MBC) is an 9-week, 9 session program (i.e., the study intervention being tested in the RCT) providing systematic and intensive training in mindfulness meditation practices, applied to health behaviors relevant to college students and young adults. The MBC intervention will be administered live, online via the free video conferencing platform, Zoom, to all eligible study participants enrolled in the active arms of the study. In addition to the 9-week, 9 session MBC class, referred to as "standard dose MBC" from here on out, investigators will also be testing a "low-dose MBC" version of the intervention, where each weekly session will run 1.5 hours in length rather than 2.5 hours. This is a 3-arm randomized controlled trial. The standard-dose and low-dose versions of the MBC intervention will be compared to a third arm of the study, a health education active control group. Members of the control group will be offered the MBC class upon completion of the research study. The Study Aims are to: (1) Evaluate feasibility and acceptability of MBC delivered in two online formats (standard dose vs. low dose). (2) Evaluate impacts of MBC standard-dose vs. MBC low-dose vs. health education control group on health conditions relevant for emerging adults, demonstrated to be influenced by MBC in a prior study, specifically depressive symptoms, loneliness, and sedentary activity. (3) Explore mechanisms by which MBC may exert effects on aforementioned health conditions, including interoceptive awareness, decentering, and perceived stress. Participant Population: young adults aged 18-29 years of age, residing in the United States who screen eligible will be invited to enroll. Students will be screened using a two-part process taking place online. Research assessments at baseline and 3-month will take place digitally using Qualtrics, LLC (Provo, UT, USA) survey management tool. Participants will be sent secure links via email that can be accessed with their participant identification number. Enrolled participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) standard MBC; (2) low-dose MBC or (3) health education control group. The control group will be given the opportunity to participate in the intervention after the study MBC course is completed and follow-up assessments have been administered.
Background: The risk of heart disease among African Americans is still common despite a greater understanding of the disease and better approaches to managing it. Healthy cooking and eating patterns can help reduce the risk of heart disease. But things like access to grocery stores and knowledge of good nutrition can affect these healthy patterns. Researchers want to see if community-based programs can help. Objective: To learn about the cooking behaviors of African American adults at risk for heart disease. Also, to see if a community-based cooking intervention will affect home-cooking behaviors. Eligibility: African American adults 18 and older who live in Wards 7 and 8 of Washington, D.C., and have at least one self-reported risk factor for heart disease Design: Phase I participants will complete a survey. It asks about their medical history, lifestyle, stress level, and eating habits. They will take part in a focus group. During this, they will talk about what they eat and what foods are available to them. Participation lasts 1 day for 3 hours at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Phase II participants will go to shared cooking events at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church. These will be held once a week for 6 weeks. They will be led by a trained chef. Participants will visit the NIH Clinical Center 3 times. Transportation will be provided if they need it. They will have physical exams and have blood drawn. They will be interviewed and complete questionnaires. A dietician will review the food they eat. An occupational therapist will assess their cooking skills. They will keep a daily cooking journal.
