Apnoeic oxygenation refers to oxygenation that occurs through the insufflation of oxygen into the lungs in the absence spontaneous respiration or positive pressure ventilation. It is used to extend the time to desaturation at induction of anaesthesia and as a primary oxygenation technique during airway surgery. The impact of high-flow nasal oxygen flow rate selection on gas exchange is poorly understood. Participants in this study will be randomised to receive a certain nasal oxygen flow rate during apnoea and its effect on gas exchange will be measured by blood gas analysis.

Effect of Pasteurized Akkermansia Muciniphila on Insulin Resistance in Otherwise Healthy Subjects With Dysglycaemia

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila (pAKK) in improving insulin sensitivity in hyperglycaemic, but otherwise healthy persons with metabolic syndrome. This is the primary objective of this study. Secondary objectives consist of evaluation of the effects of next generation beneficial microbes on metabolic health, anthropometry and body composition, and safety. Therefore, the trial is designed as a phase 2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group, multi-center trial comparing pAKK with placebo in restoring insulin sensitivity in dysglycaemic but otherwise healthy subjects with metabolic syndrome. In total, 144 enrolled participants will attend 6 study visits in total. Study visits may be conducted in the clinic, at home by a Healthcare Professional, or by telephone / telemedicine.

Connect-5 Needs Assessment Survey to Identify Healthy Lifestyle Requirements of a Rural Irish Community

This is an anonymous needs assessment survey of the population of an Irish urban town. We plan to collect anonymous survey data in order to better understand residents needs and to determine the desired functionality of a new coach-led wellness app operated by our partners. This platform is currently trialled for health care professionals working in the RCSI Hospital Group. The survey will collect information on participants demographics, their lifestyle (including sleep, exercise, food, relationships, meaning and purpose, substance use and stress management). We will also ask participants about their use of wellness apps to support healthy choices related to their lifestyle. We also plan to conduct a qualitative assessment to further explore needs related to lifestyle health in specific cohorts, namely, older people (65 years and older), recent migrants, members of the travelling community, perinatal women, lone-parents, individuals with physical disabilities, secondary school students and remote workers.

Flap reconstruction is utilised increasingly for repair of skin and soft tissue defects following pelvic exenteration. Many methods have been proposed but the outcomes associated with each remain largely unknown and the choice dependant on surgeon preference and patient/ disease characteristics. This review sought to assess the preferred methods for perineal reconstruction following pelvic exenteration by retrospectively assessing the outcomes associated with each at an international, multi-centre level.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has a significant impact on one's quality and quantity of life resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. In Ireland, COPD has the highest hospital admissions in comparison to other countries within the organisation for economic cooperation and development (OECD). There is a need to improve knowledge and self-management behaviour in order to improve recognition of early signs of an exacerbation thereby seeking early treatment from the general practitioner (GP) thus reducing hospital admissions among this cohort . There are limited studies pertaining to the use of a comprehensive self-management programme via a smartphone app for people with COPD on a longitudinal basis.The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a smartphone application self-management programme on clinical health outcomes in patients with COPD.
