RATIONALE: Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells. It is not known whether giving high-dose or low-dose interferon alfa is more effective than no further therapy in treating patients with stage III melanoma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of high- or low-dose interferon alfa with that of no further therapy following surgery in treating patients who have stage III melanoma.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Bone marrow transplantation may be able to replace immune cells that were destroyed by chemotherapy to kill tumor cells. It is not yet known which regimen of combination chemotherapy with or without bone marrow transplantation is more effective in treating promyelocytic leukemia PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of different combination chemotherapy regimens with or without bone marrow transplantation in treating patients who have promyelocytic leukemia.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with peripheral stem cell or bone marrow transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy followed by bone marrow or peripheral stem cell transplantation in treating patients with acute myelogenous leukemia.
