A Brief SMART Exercise Instant Messaging Support Intervention - a Pilot Study

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancer diseases, globally and locally. Several health benefits of increased physical activity (PA) have been reported for people with cancer. PA plays a critical role across the cancer trajectory, from prevention through to post-diagnosis and has been proposed as an alternative for improving physical and psychosocial health outcomes, reducing cancer recurrence, and cancer-specific and all-cause mortality. Although there are a variety of exercise intervention programs for cancer patients, those programs were quite intensive, requiring individuals to commit extra time and effort. Feeling of overwhelmed appointments, lack of time, other barriers, including high cost and limited access to facilities are the most frequently reported barriers that prevent people from starting and maintaining exercise. Hence, the investigators propose to use a brief messaging lifestyle modification intervention program to incorporating simple and easy-to-do patient-centred home-based lifestyle-integrated exercise into daily activities of patients with lung cancer. The aims are to explore the feasibility of using instant messaging to enhance physical activity and improve their fatigue, emotion and quality of life, and obtain feedback from patients for intervention and study design improvement.

A Machine Learning Approach for Predicting tDCS Treatment Outcomes of Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by disturbances in communication, poor social skills, and aberrant behaviors. Particularly detrimental are the presence of restricted and repetitive stereotyped behaviors and uncontrollable temper outbursts over trivial changes in the environment, which often cause emotional stress for the children, their families, schools and neighborhood communities. Fundamental to these cognitive and behavioral problems is the disordered cortical connectivity and resultant executive dysfunction that underpin the use of effective strategies to integrate information across contexts. Brain connectivity problems affect the rate at which information travels across the brain. Slow processing speed relates to a reduced capacity of executive function to recall and formulate thoughts and actions automatically, with the result that autistic children with poor processing speed have great difficulty learning or perceiving relationships across multiple experiences. In consequence, these children compensate for the impaired ability to integrate information from the environment by memorizing visual details or individual rules from each situation. This explains why children with autism tend to follow routines in precise detail and show great distress over seemingly trivial changes in the environment. To date, there is no known cure for ASD, and the disorder remains a highly disabling condition. Recently, a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, transcranial direct current Stimulation (tDCS) has shown great promise as a potentially effective and costeffective tool for reducing core symptoms such as anxiety, aggression, impulsivity, and inattention in patients with autism. This technique has been shown to modify behavior by inducing changes in cortical excitability and enhancing connectivity between the targeted brain areas. However, not all ASD patients respond to this intervention the same way and predicting the behavioral impact of tDCS in patients with ASD remains a clinical challenge. This proposed study thus aims to address these challenges by determining whether resting-state EEG and clinical data at baseline can be used to differentiate responders from non-responders to tDCS treatment. Findings from the study will provide new guidance for designing intervention programs for individuals with ASD.

Chemsex Engagement and HIV Biomedical Prevention in MSM

HIV biomedical prevention through treatment-as-prevention (TasP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly efficacious for reducing HIV transmission risk. The benefits could be undermined by the rising HIV transmission risks in men who have sex with men (MSM) who engaged in chemsex. This project aims to assess the impacts of chemsex on the growth of the HIV epidemic by exploring the complex relationships between chemsex engagement and usage of HIV biomedical prevention in MSM in Hong Kong. Participants would be recruited from the community and clinics in 2 cross-sectional studies (500 HIV-negative and 500 HIV-positive MSM), for HIV self-testing and completing an electronic questionnaire. The association of chemsex would be examined between PrEP-naïve and PrEP experienced HIV-negative MSM, and between good and poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among HIV-positive subjects in case-control analyses using logistic regression and multilevel models. The main outcomes include coverage of biomedical prevention in MSM, and their drug use patterns.

Modelling Tau Distribution From DTI With Generative Adversarial Network for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis

The most significant impact of this project is to propose for the first time a novel generative adversarial network (GAN), as one kind of deep learning architecture, to automatically generate synthetic PET images reflecting tau deposition, from brain DTI images. If successful, this framework will become the most state-of-the-art approach to simulate the stereotypical pattern of intracerebral tau accumulation and distribution in vivo. Synthetic tau-PET images via DTI, possessing overwhelming superiority in radiation-free, non-invasiveness and cost-effectiveness, will potentially serve as one of alternative modalities of PET in detecting tau-load and probably outperform PET on accessibility, generalizability, and availability in future, making it much more attractive in clinical application. A big conceptual shift may occur preferring a fire-new tau-PET simulated via DTI. The DTI data-driven deep learning framework to be created in this project will constitute an accurate, robust, clinically applicable and explainable tool to efficiently categorize the subjects into tau-burden positive and tau-burden negative cases, which will undoubtedly contribute to both clinical and research activities.
