The principle objective of this research is to more precisely determine the degree of benefit that hyperbaric oxygen therapy affords in the treatment of late radiation tissue injury. The study has eight* components. Seven involve the evaluation of established radionecrosis at varying anatomic sites (mandible, larynx, skin, bladder, rectum, colon, and gyn). The eighth will investigate the potential of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy to prophylax against late radiation tissue injury. *(One of the arms, HORTIS IV - Proctitis has been closed to further patient recruitment. This decision was based on an interim statistical analysis which generated sufficient evidence to support closing down this arm of HORTIS.)

This is a multi-centre, open-label, 96 week study to evaluate the safety, tolerability and extent and duration of improvement in HIV-1 infected subjects with antiretroviral induced facial lipoatrophy, randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive immediate or deferred deep subcutaneous injections of poly-L-lactic acid (PLA). Subjects will receive 4 treatments of PLA approximately every 2nd week, either at trial entry or following a delay period of 24 weeks.

Management of Common Bile Duct (CBD) Stones at Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

This study is designed to assess whether a new technique called facilitated endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is or is not superior to conventional ERCP for removing stones found in the bile duct at the time of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. ERCP is an endoscopic procedure used to facilitate the radiological examination and subsequent manipulation of the common bile duct (eg. opening it up, which is called sphincterotomy). Both facilitated and conventional ERCP are performed as a separate procedure after the initial gallbladder surgery. This is a comparative study of these two techniques in a randomised clinical trial. The aim of this randomised clinical trial is to enable surgeons to decide whether placement of a plastic stent at the time of laparoscopic cholecystectomy will improve the success rate and safety of subsequent ERCP and sphincterotomy.

Heart Spare the Nephron (STN) Study - A Study of CellCept (Mycophenolate Mofetil) and Rapamune (Sirolimus) in Heart Transplant Recipients

Heart transplant patients on a standard care regimen of CNI, MMF, and corticosteroids will enter the study 4-6 weeks post-transplant. At 3 months after transplant, patients will be randomized to either continue this regimen or CNI therapy will be discontinued and replaced by sirolimus therapy (in combination with MMF and corticosteroids). The effect of these 2 regimens on efficacy, safety and renal function will be evaluated.The anticipated time on study treatment is 1-2 years and the target sample size is 500+ individuals.
