Filter by:We are studying the effect of placing the levonorgestrel IUD (Mirena) immediately after birth on breastfeeding. Women who wish to have a levonorgestrel IUD placed after their birth, wish to breastfeed, and are willing to participate in the study will be randomly assigned to either get the IUD placed immediately after delivery of the baby and placenta or 4-6 weeks later. We do not believe there will be a difference in breastfeeding 8 weeks after delivery between those who get the IUD placed early or later.
The purpose of this project is to remove barriers to obtaining contraceptive methods, including the most effective and expensive methods. The study seeks to remove the financial and knowledge barriers and promote the most effective contraceptive methods to reduce unintended pregnancy rates at the population level.
The GyneFix-Viz is a frameless copper intrauterine device (IUD) used for contraception. The GyneFix IUD has been marketed in Europe and Asia for about 10 years. The new anchor in the GyneFix IUD was designed to be more visible on ultrasound and this could improve safety by reducing failed insertions and perforations. We now need to know how easy it is for doctors to see and measure the distance of the anchor to the outside of the uterus. The purpose of this open, prospective, observational study is to assess the feasibility of measuring the distance from the serosa of the uterus to the anchor following insertion of the GyneFix-Viz and at follow-up 6-8 weeks later. Secondary objectives are to assess the ease and pain of insertion, the acceptability of the device to Canadian women and any complications. We will also compare expulsion rates in post-abortion and other women.
The IUB (Intrauterine ball) is a copper releasing intrauterine contraceptive device consisting of copper beads on a flexible NiTinol wire. It was designed to reduce the pain and bleeding caused by traditional T-shaped copper IUDs and to reduce expulsions. In an initial pilot of 15 women, there were no complications during the 12 months. This observational pilot study of 50 women will determine that the early expulsion rate is not greater than 10% and that there is patient and physician acceptance, so that we can plan a larger randomized controlled trial for efficacy and safety.
The investigators' specific aims are to determine if more women using ENG contraceptive implants who report a bleeding-spotting episode of at least seven days will stop bleeding within 3 days of beginning a 14-day course of combined oral hormonal steroids, as compared to women receiving 14 days of placebo.
The study is designed as non interventional to observe the continuation rate and the patient satisfaction in women who have a LNG-IUS (Levonorgestrel releasing Intrauterine system) inserted for contraception over the period of 12 months under real life condition in India.The study will begin after the study approval by ethics committee.All Indian women aged between 18-49 years who are initiating LNG IUS therapy for contraception will be included in study after taking the informed consent.Patients will be observed for upto 12 months.The study involves general examination of patients, collection of data like medical history, previous contraceptive use,concomitant medication etc.The study is planned to enroll 600 subjects from multiple study centers spread across India. The study data will be analyzed with appropriate statistical methods.
To observe the bleeding patterns of post-abortion immediate insertion of IUS compared to Cu-IUD over the first 6 months.
-Purpose: To develop and evaluate an intervention designed to improve consistent contraceptive use and dual method use in particular, among female sex workers (FSWs) in Rift Valley Province in Kenya. Design: A qualitative descriptive study will be conducted to develop the intervention. A quasi-experimental, non-randomized, two-group, pre-/post-intervention design will be used to evaluate the intervention. Study Population: FSWs living in Naivasha, Gilgil, and Nanyuki, Rift Valley Province. Study Duration: Phase I - 3 months Phase II - 12 months Objectives: Develop an intervention designed to increase contraceptive use among FSWs by incorporating formative data and behavioral theory and by involving the target audience and service providers in the development of the intervention. Examine the effectiveness of the intervention at increasing non-barrier modern contraceptive use and dual method use among FSWs. Assess the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention, on the parts of both the clients (FSW) and service providers. Estimate the unit cost to provide these services to one client. The Essure System is indicated for women who desire non-incisional permanent birth control (female sterilization) by occlusion of the fallopian tubes. The objective of the study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Essure System (Model ESS505) for permanent birth control in preventing pregnancy. The Essure ESS505 System includes a design modification that will be studied to determine if it provides immediate birth control, thereby removing the three months waiting period required for the commercially available Essure System Model 305 to be effective.
Contraceptive failure is the primary cause of unintended pregnancy in the United States. With obesity rates at epidemic proportions, any association between obesity and strategies that prevent undesired pregnancies constitutes a significant public health and economic concern. Evidence from recent epidemiological studies and our preliminary data (sub-therapeutic levels of steroid hormones due to drug clearance and half-life) suggest that obesity reduces oral contraceptive efficacy. Furthermore, preliminary analysis suggested that a sub-group of obese women, defined by their own birth weight, are at higher risk of contraceptive failure. Further studies are necessary to investigate whether birth weight, a surrogate marker of in utero growth restriction, is a useful diagnostic marker for the identification of women prone to contraceptive failure. Such an understanding is critical to finding a contraceptive strategy with better efficacy for these women. The overall goal of this project is to test pharmacokinetics of oral contraceptive agents in obese women with low birth weight and compare to obese women with normal birth weight. The main hypothesis for this proposal is that an adverse in utero environment programs the expression and function of enzymes and transporters that underlie pharmacokinetics of oral contraceptives, and leads to contraceptive failure. Reproductive-aged, ovulatory women of obese BMI >30 kg/m2 with normal birth weight (5.5-8 lbs; n=10) and low birth weight (<5.5 lbs; n=10), will be placed on oral contraceptives for 1 month. At several key time points, synthetic steroid pharmacokinetics, gonadotropins (luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone) and ovarian hormone levels (estradiol, progesterone) will be monitored.
