Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as methotrexate and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Monoclonal antibodies, such as trastuzumab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Trastuzumab may also help methotrexate and carboplatin work better by making tumor cells more sensitive to the drugs. Giving osmotic blood-brain barrier disruption together with methotrexate, carboplatin, and trastuzumab may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of carboplatin when given together with methotrexate and trastuzumab after mannitol in treating women with breast cancer that has spread to the brain.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as irinotecan, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Irinotecan may make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Giving irinotecan together with whole-brain radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of irinotecan when given together with whole-brain radiation therapy and to see how well they work in treating patients with brain metastases from solid tumors. (The study of side effects and best dose has ended as of 4/15/05)
RATIONALE: Stereotactic radiation therapy can send x-rays directly to the tumor and cause less damage to normal tissue. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. It is not yet known whether stereotactic radiation therapy is more effective with or without whole-brain radiation therapy in treating patients with brain metastases. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying stereotactic radiation therapy and whole-brain radiation therapy to see how well they work compared with stereotactic radiation therapy alone in treating patients with brain metastases.
RATIONALE: Studying cognitive function, such as thinking, attention, concentration, and memory, in postmenopausal women receiving hormone therapy for breast cancer may help improve quality of life and the ability to plan treatment for cancer. PURPOSE: This phase III trial is studying cognitive function in postmenopausal women with breast cancer receiving hormone therapy on clinical trial IBCSG-1-98.
RATIONALE: Studying quality of life in breast cancer survivors may help determine the long-term effects of breast cancer and may help improve the quality of life for future breast cancer survivors. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying quality of life in female breast cancer survivors and their spouse, partner, or acquaintance.
RATIONALE: Questionnaires that assess symptoms caused by cancer and cancer therapy may help improve the ability to plan treatment for patients with invasive cancer to help them live longer and more comfortably. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying symptoms caused by cancer and cancer therapy in patients with invasive breast, lung, prostate, or colorectal cancer.
RATIONALE: Questionnaires that measure quality of life may improve the ability to plan treatment for patients with primitive neuroectodermal tumors. PURPOSE: This phase III trial is studying quality of life in patients who have undergone previous treatment for primitive neuroectodermal tumors.
RATIONALE: Modafinil may help relieve fatigue and improve quality of life in patients with cancer. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well modafinil works in treating fatigue in patients with cancer.
RATIONALE: Hyperbaric oxygen may increase blood flow and decrease swelling in areas of the brain damaged by radiation therapy. Giving hyperbaric oxygen therapy together with dexamethasone may be an effective treatment for radiation necrosis of the brain. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying how well hyperbaric oxygen therapy works in treating patients with radiation necrosis of the brain.
RATIONALE: Modafinil may be effective in relieving fatigue and improving behavioral changes such as memory loss in patients who have undergone treatment for primary brain cancer. The effectiveness of modafinil in relieving fatigue and improving behavioral change is not yet known. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is comparing how well two different doses of modafinil work in treating fatigue and behavioral changes in patients who have undergone treatment for primary brain cancer.
