Filter by:Recently, attention has been drawn to non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), in order to enhance cognitive functions by modifying brain plasticity and use it in different healthy and diseased populations. In the current research, investigator aim to examine the short-term effects of multiple tDCS protocols in healthy adults population on visual attention and identify the neural underpinnings of tDCS-induced behavioral aftereffects using a combined tDCS/ MRI network-based approach.
This study aims to assess the prevalence and severity of dementia in an established cohort of community-dwelling older adults living in three neighboring rural Ecuadorian villages (Atahualpa, El Tambo, and Prosperidad), as well as to evaluate clinical and neuroimaging correlates of dementia in the study population. By the use of the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDRS), the study also aims to assess the lower cutoff of the MoCA that better correlates with the occurrence of dementia in the study population. In addition, this study will provides grounds for the initiation of a prospective cohort study to assess factors influencing the development of dementia in the follow-up.

The investigators will conduct tau positron emission tomography (PET) scans on 125 adults using the radiopharmaceutical Flortaucipir F18 ([18F]AV-1451). This will allow the investigators to determine tau deposition across adults of different ages and assess the relationship of current tau burden to cognitive function and amyloid deposition collected over the previous 10-year interval.
In this research study we want to learn more about whether taking Niagen, a daily supplement containing a form of Vitamin B3, will improve cognitive function, mood, and daily activity in people with Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).
Cerebral small vessel disease is a frequent cause of cognitive disability among older adults (OAs) in Mexico that imposes a significant burden on the health system and OAs' families. We have called the program Mind and Movement for Cognitive Health (MeMo-Salud-Cog-3). Programs to prevent or delay OAs' cognitive decline are scarce. Methods and analysis: A double-blind, randomized clinical trial will be conducted. The study will aim to evaluate two 24-week double-task (aerobic and cognitive) square-stepping exercise programs for OAs at risk of cognitive decline-one program with and another without caregiver participation-and to compare these with an aerobic-balance-stretching exercise program (control group). 255 OAs (85 per group) affiliated with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) between 60 and 65 years of age with self-reported cognitive concerns will participate. They will be stratified by education level and randomly allocated to the groups. The intervention will last 24 weeks, and the effect of each program will be evaluated 12, 24, and 52 weeks after the intervention. Participants' demographic and clinical characteristics will be collected at baseline. The outcomes will include: (i) general cognitive function; (ii) specific cognitive functions; (iii) dual-task gait; (iv) blood pressure; (v) carotid intima-media thickness; (vi) carotid arterial compliance; (vii) OAs' health-related quality of life; and (viii) caregiver burden. We will estimate differences in outcomes between each intervention group and the control group at baseline and follow-up evaluations. We will assess differences-in-differences (D-in-D) treatment effects using a D-in-D estimator. If we identify statistically significant differences in participants' baseline characteristics between the groups, we will adjust the D-in-D estimators by these covariates using generalized linear regression models. Ethics and dissemination: The study was approved by the IMSS Ethics and Research Committee (registration number 2018-785-095). All participants will sign a consent form prior to their participation. The study results will be disseminated to IMSS authorities, healthcare providers and the research community.
This study aims to evaluate the effect of individual reminiscence therapy (RT) on the global cognitive function of people with neurocognitive disorders attending social responses and to evaluate the ability of individually applied reminiscence therapy (RT) to improve overall cognitive function, memory, executive function, mood and quality of life (QoL) of elderly people with neurocognitive impairment attending social responses. It is proposed a multicenter study with an experimental design with randomized controlled repeated measures. Participants in the intervention group will hold two RT sessions per week for three months. Control group participants will maintain their treatment as usual.
Purpose: To conduct a one-arm phase II trial to: (1) compare changes in pre- to post-chemotherapy cognitive function in a cohort of patients with breast cancer receiving memantine to historical controls; (2) examine how depression, anxiety, fatigue, baseline Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and cognitive effort relate to objective and self-reported cognitive function; and (3) estimate the feasibility of conducting a clinical trial of memantine for attenuating cognitive decline in patients with breast cancer during chemotherapy. Participants: Adult patients with stage I-III breast cancer scheduled for adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Procedures (methods): Cognitive assessments will be performed within one week of initiating and four weeks after completion of chemotherapy. Patients will receive memantine 10 mg twice daily between the pre- and post-chemotherapy study assessments. Cognitive function will be assessed objectively using a computerized cognitive test (Delayed Matching to Sample (DMS) test) and a standard neuropsychological battery. To assess subjective cognitive function, the Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Cognitive Function measure will be used. Depression, anxiety, fatigue, menopausal status, and sleep will be assessed as covariates.
The aim of this study is to investigate the modulation effects of Baduanjin (BDJ), a simple and innovative mind-body exercise, on cognitive function, resting state functional connectivity, and brain morphometry in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). The results obtained will provide novel insights for improving the prevention of age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.
