Pain Sensitivity Evaluation in Respiratory Patients

Previous studies have reported that asthmatic or chronic pulmonary obstructive disease patients have an increased response to pain stimulus. However, this aspect has not been evaluated in allergic patients. Additionally, the difference in pain sensitivity between asymptomatic period crisis have not been evaluated yet.

The Effect of Intradermal Local Anesthetic Injection in FBSS (Failed Back Surgery Syndrome)

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome is described as chronic pain in the low back and/or legs after a spinal procedure. It is estimated that %10 - 40 of the patients who had spinal surgery will have Failed Back Surgery Syndrome. The aim of this study is to research whether intradermal injection of the local anesthetic on the operation scar area and the area in which pain referred to in patients with Failed Back Surgery Syndrome has effects on pain and functionality or not.

Staff Experiences of Using Virtual Reality in a Pain Management Group

Immersive Virtual Reality is a fast developing technology that allows a number of opportunities to engage people in activities that they otherwise might find difficult. For instance exercising in a fun way when they have difficulty exercising in the way they previously enjoyed. Alternatively the immersive nature of the experience might make it easier to engage in tasks in an otherwise distracting world. The investigators are interested in exploring how Virtual Reality games and programs can help people with Chronic Pain. Working with Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University the research team introduced Virtual Reality headsets and games to people engaging in a Pain Management Program Group lasting 6 weeks for 3 hours a week. This involved NHS patients in the UK, delivered by a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. This group involved 8 individuals with a variety of chronic pain conditions. Patients used Virtual Reality headsets and games throughout the program to aid exercise and mindfulness activities. This is a relatively new approach and the investigators are not aware of any other organisations making use of this technology in this way. It would be useful developing its use to explore the issues those leading the Pain Management Group and supporting patients found. Speaking to these individuals in interviews will explore their experiences and feelings deeply and allow us to learn about what worked well and what challenges they faced. These interviews would be conducted in a format of qualitative research that would explore the experiences staff had, and compare it to other experiences of introducing patient-used technology in healthcare.

This is a retrospective and transverse multicenter study to identify predictive factors for adherence to TENS by chronic pain patients followed in structures specialized in Chronic Pain management (SPC). The study contains 2 parts: - A retrospective part of data collection in the patient follow-up file of the SPC during the 6 months elapsed after the first rental prescription. - A transversal part, aimed at collecting additional information on the use of TENS, satisfaction and quality of life during a telephone interview after 6 months of use.

iACT With Pain: an ICT-delivered Intervention for Self-management of Chronic Pain

This project aims to test the effectiveness of an ICT-based delivery of an evidencebased psychological intervention for Chronic Pain (CP) - iACTwithPain. CP is a prevalent health problem worldwide, including in Portugal (around 30% of population) placing a significant economic burden on healthcare systems. Although CP is associated with psychological symptoms (i.e. depression and anxiety) and poor social functioning and quality of life, there is a lack of nationwide provision of evidence-based psychological services in healthcare units for CP. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) offer attractive tools through which self-management programmes can be delivered. The dissemination and commercialization of iACTwithPain will provide a much-needed pain self-management service and its ICT-based delivery form will increase the accessibility in large cohorts of the population with limited access to standard treatment.

Effect of Metformin on Chronic Pain After Thoracic Surgery in Diabetic Patients

Metformin has been found to have more and more functions as a commonly used hypoglycemic drug in clinic. It has been found that metformin has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and lipid metabolism regulating effects. Basic studies have shown that metformin as an adjuvant drug combined with gabapentin and tramadol is safe and effective in patients with neuropathic pain. Postoperative chronic pain as a common complication has seriously affected the quality of life and mood of patients after surgery.Some studies have shown that chronic pain after partial operation manifests as neuropathic pain. The effect of metformin on chronic pain after thoracic surgery in patients with diabetes mellitus was observed in this experiment, which was compared with patients taking insulin to control blood sugar.
