Filter by:This study employs novel methods to identify key determinants and consequences of concurrent HIV infection and regular cannabis use. This study will acquire extensive phenotype data from peripheral and brain markers of immune activation, brain structure, and neuropsychological performance (NP) in persons living with HIV (PLWH) receiving combination anti-retroviral therapy (cART) (80 regular cannabis users and 80 non-users) and HIV uninfected (HIV-) controls (80 regular cannabis users and 80 non-users). This study will provide key insights into the effects of regular cannabis and HIV on peripheral and brain markers of immune function and NP in PLWH and HIV- controls. These insights are critical for cure strategies and ongoing HIV treatment initiatives.
This study employs a repeated measures experimental design to examine the effect of THC-dominant dose of cannabis and CBD-dominant dose of cannabis, relative to placebo, on subsequent drinking in an alcohol choice task in which participants choose either to drink or receive monetary reinforcement for drinks not consumed. Cannabis will be administered simultaneously with an alcohol-priming dose or alcohol placebo. The study will enroll up to 350 nontreatment-seeking heavy episodic alcohol drinkers who use cannabis weekly.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate Community Reinforcement and Family Training for Early Psychosis (CRAFT-EP) for families experiencing early psychosis and substance use delivered exclusively or primarily via telehealth (video conferencing).
The investigators are conducting a pilot (i.e. a small study) in order to find out the effectiveness and safety of medical cannabis in the management of chronic pain. At the end of this 3 month study, investigators will gather information on how easy it is for patients to enroll and complete the entire study. The results of this pilot study will help the study team design a larger randomized controlled trial.
Subjects will participate in a 2-visit study protocol in which they will be administered cannabis of pre-determined concentrations and asked to complete a simulated drive in a driving simulator. Subjects will be scanned on two SpotLight-THC (Alpha and Beta iterations) devices and peripheral venous whole blood will be collected from subjects for analysis on up to four occasions on each visit. The purpose of the investigation will be to determine whether the SpotLight-THC device is a reliable measure of THC impairment at the roadside, with an objective to identify a unique blood analyte architecture for THC impairment using near infrared light and machine learning.
Tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC) is the psychoactive chemical in cannabis that makes people high. This study aims to dissect acute impairment of various forms of memory and learning by THC in cannabis compared to placebo. Impairment will be assessed via a short cognitive test battery and then subjects will complete four tasks in the fMRI scanner.
Clinical evidence about the effects of cannabis in the management of acute pain is rather scarce, mostly consisting of case report-based opinions on adverse events during or after general anesthesia after smoking cannabis, experimental pain trials in healthy volunteers, and a few clinical trials using different drugs, dosages and routes of administration. It is difficult to draw strong conclusions from the available evidence, that may seem sometimes even contradictory, mainly due -the investigators believe- to the many sources of variability in the study designs (e.g.: heterogeneity of the study samples, underpowered, unblinding, lack of randomization, timing of the therapeutic intervention, different experimental pain models, inclusion of different kind of surgical pain, etc.). Nevertheless, expert's opinion after a critical review of the literature is that cannabis and cannabinoids may have a beneficial role in the management of acute pain, at least for a selected group of patients and through an appropriate therapeutic intervention. Cannabis oil seem to be most suitable to our investigation. The co-administration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with cannabidiol (CBD) may translate into additional therapeutic benefits with an attenuation of adverse effects. This study applies a hypothesis-driven approach to examine the effects of chronic marijuana use on HIV-associated inflammation and its subsequent impacts on central nervous system function, with the goal of identifying the mechanisms through which cannabinoids modulate neurological disorders and other comorbidities in persons with HIV.
