Technology Assisted Treatment for Binge Eating Behavior

Binge-eating behavior is a central feature of eating disorders (e.g., binge-eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa-binge-eating/purging subtype) and is associated with higher rates of psychopathology, psychosocial impairment, medical comorbidity, and more severe obesity, all of which pose significant public health problems. Passive detection of binge eating episodes combined with a context-based reminder intervention could assist a patient in resuming healthy eating patterns. This study will test a smartwatch app that identifies binge eating behavior and provides CBT strategies to the patient after the episode.

The primary goal of this study is to elucidate the impact of disorder provocation on the efficacy of TMS for the treatment of BED. In order to meet this objective, the investigators propose to evaluate this relationship in using a crossover study. Secondary objectives of this study include determining whether TMS with or without BED symptom provocation has effects in altering neurophysiology as detected by fMRI.

Twenty women, ages 60 or older, will be consented and enrolled in a single-arm, pilot implementation trial of the age-tailored cognitive-behavioral based BE intervention. Participants will complete assessments at baseline, post-intervention, and at two follow-up timepoints; weekly BE frequency will be collected to monitor progress during the intervention period.

The goal of this observational study is to explore if different and specific profiles can be identified in adults with binge eating disorder (BED) depending on their additional eating pathology, emotion regulation and executive functions. The main questions it aims to answer are: - Is there different and specific subgroups of patients with BED according to baseline profiles in emotion regulation, executive function and additional eating pathology (including restriction, chaotic eating, grazing and eating on external cues)? - Are subgroups of individuals with BED (based on identified profiles) associated with outcome at end of treatment and follow-up? - What is the trajectories in remission rates of specific symptom dimensions (eating disorder pathology, emotion regulation, executive function, and depressive symptoms) in individuals with BED and is there specific trajectory profiles in these dimensions? - Is early changes in specific symptom dimensions (eating pathology, emotion regulation, executive function, or depression) associated with outcome of BED? Participants will be asked to fill in questionnaires before treatment as usual, 10 weeks into treatment, at end of treatment and at 6- and 12-month follow-up.

Treating Binge Eating and Obesity Digitally in Black Women

More than 30% of Black women with obesity binge eat. Binge eating may increase the risk for the development of metabolic syndrome and binge-eating-disorder (BED), which is associated with severe obesity. Though several effective treatments for binge eating exist, Black women have not fared well. Not only has their inclusion in treatment trials been limited, but when participating, they are more likely to drop out, and/or lose less weight, compared to their White counterparts. Furthermore, treatment for binge eating is often not available in primary care and community-based settings places where Black women are more likely to receive treatment for their eating and weight-related concerns. Currently, there is scant intervention research to treat binge eating in Black women. With the highest rates of obesity (57%) nationally, Black women are in need of culturally-relevant treatments for binge eating and weight gain prevention. Given the established relationship between frequent binge eating and subsequent weight gain, addressing binge eating among Black women with obesity is imperative.

A Study of the Effects of Oxytocin in Adults With Obesity and Binge-eating Disorder

This study evaluates the impact of intranasal oxytocin vs placebo in patients with obesity and binge eating disorder with obesity. We hypothesize that 8 weeks of intranasal oxytocin vs placebo will improve clinical outcomes [weight loss, reduction in bingeing frequency], and have a satisfactory safety and tolerability profile. We will also explore the predictive value of changes in homeostatic appetite, reward sensitivity, and impulse control, the identified underlying mediators, as assessed 4 weeks into the intervention, for treatment success after 8 weeks of the intervention

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy As A Therapeutic Tool In Patients With Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder (BED) is one of the recently acknowledged eating disorders, with many theories underlying its pathology whether biological or psychological. From the biological perspective, changes in plasma ghrelin were hypothesized to have a major role in developing and maintaining the disorder, while from the psychopathological perspectives, abnormalities in emotion regulation were found in many patients. Since Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is known to target emotion dysregulation, the main aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of DBT versus treatment as usual (TAU) in BED patients, and whether plasma ghrelin level will be affected after treatment in both arms.

Optimizing Digital Health Technology Interventions to Increase Skill Acquisition and Utilization

The purpose of this study is to identify the independent and combined effects of two types of self-monitoring and two types of micro-interventions when combined with standard cognitive behavioral treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). The primary aims of this study are (1) to evaluate the optimal complexity of Self-Monitoring and Micro-Interventions on eating pathology (at post-treatment and at 6 and 12-month follow-ups and (2) to test the hypotheses that the optimal complexity level of each component is moderated by baseline deficits in self-regulation. The secondary aim will be to test target engagement for each level of complexity for each component, i.e., to test whether higher complexity of each technological components is associated with better rates of therapeutic skill use and acquisition and that improvements in skill use and acquisition are associated with improvements in outcomes. A final exploratory aim will be to quantify the component interaction effects, which may be partially additive (because components overlap and/or there is diminishing return), fully additive, or synergistic (in that component complexities may partially depend on each other).
