Anxiety/Depression, Sleep and Alcohol in Elderly Anxiety/Depression, Sleep Disturbances and Alcohol Use Disorder in Elderly With Cognitive Complaints

The goal of MEM-ASA is to investigate the prevalence of anxiety/depression, sleep disturbances and alcohol use disorder in elderly with cognitive complaints. In memory clinics of Normandy (France), all patients aged over 50 year-old are systematically questioned about anxiety, depression, sleep quality and alcohol use disorder. They also perform a neuropsychological assessment. Questionnaires are given to the patient and his/her caregiver to be filled in at home. Levels of anxiety/depression, sleep quality and alcohol consumption are related to neuropsychological performance, diagnosis and responses to the questionaires.

Theta Burst Stimulation as a Tool to Decrease Drinking in Treatment-seeking Alcohol Users

There is growing interest in the utilization of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a novel, non-pharmacologic approach to decreasing alcohol use among treatment-seeking individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The results of this study will be used to determine which of the 2 proposed TMS strategies has a larger effect on drinking behavior (% days abstinent, % heavy drinking days) as well as alcohol cue-reactivity in a 4 month period. These data will pave the way for TMS to be used as an innovative, new treatment option for individuals with AUD.

Neurophysiological Mechanisms of Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

In brief, ART is an innovative "mind-body" (body-centric) psychotherapy that makes use of established core components of trauma-focused therapy including imaginal exposure and imagery rescripting to promote memory reconsolidation, all facilitated as the patient is directed by the therapist to perform sets of lateral left-right eye movements similar to rapid eye movements (REM). The investigators propose to investigate how ART may directly influence heart rate variability (HRV), EEG power spectral densities, and sleep architecture in three aims. At the broadest level, the investigators postulate that both within individual ART sessions, and across the full course of treatment (e.g. up to 4 sessions), ART results in a profound shift from sympathetic (arousal) to parasympathetic (rest) nervous system balance, and that this shift can be reliably measured by neurophysiological assessment using electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement.

Population Screening Using Smartphone in Milpa Alta

The objective of this study is to make a suicide screening in the entire population of Milpa Alta (approximately 150,000 inhabitants), taking into account other outcomes such as depression, anxiety, alcohol and drugs. For this, an app for Smartphone (MeMind) or a web platform (www.MeMind.net) will be used in which the participants will take a self-administered questionnaire, composed of several psychometric instruments . It is expected that 70% of the population between 15 and 70 years old can do so directly with their own Smartphone, although web access posts will be enabled in educational and municipal units to avoid discrimination based on age or access to technology. Our main hypothesis argues that the early identification of people at risk in almost the entire community can be done with an App for Smartphone, serving to depict a map of mental health and related needs of the population, serving for the planning of healthcare services of the local environment, and ultimately for the best assistance of groups and individuals with greater needs through their identification and early reference to medical assistance.

A Smartphone Based Intervention for the Prevention of Relapse in Alcohol Dependence

The rate of relapse following an inpatient alcohol rehabilitation program has been around 50% for a number of years. Offered treatments mainly focus on conscious and controllable aspects of behaviour, but research has found that much of the craving in addiction is guided by automatic processes, which are for a large part unconscious and poorly controlled by the individual. One way to influence these automatic processes is by applying cognitive bias modification, a cognitive-behavioural intervention that can be applied by a computer application. In alcohol addition, a common cognitive bias is the Alcohol-Approach bias. The Anti-Alcohol Training is a form of cognitive bias modification that was developed to reduce this approach bias and it has been shown to reduce the rates of relapse by 4-8%. A drawback of the training is that patients do not continue this at home after discharge. One way to increase accessibility is to offer the training in an app-game form. In this study the investigators have developed a smartphone based training app that allows patients to more easily use the Anti-Alcohol training at home after discharge. The study aims to assess whether use of the app further reduces the alcohol bias and whether it can reduce yearly relapse rates.

Motivational Strategies in Batterer Intervention Programs for Offenders With Alcohol/Drug Abuse Problems (IMP-ADAPs)

Alcohol and/or drug abuse problems (ADAPs) have been consistently identified in the scientific literature as a risk factor of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW). Around 50% of IPVAW offenders referred to batterer intervention programs (BIPs) have ADAPs. ADAPs are also one of the main predictors of BIPs dropout. In Spain, the majority of BIPs do not fit the intervention to specific needs or characteristics of IPVAW offenders, such as those with ADAPs. The aim of this research is to assess the effectiveness of a new motivational strategy adapted to IPVAW offenders with ADAPs, aiming to increase treatment adherence and to improve BIPs outcomes. The motivational strategy will include an individualized motivational plan (IMP) developed for each participant with ADAPs (IMP-ADAPs). In these IMPs one of the main aims will be to reduce alcohol and/or drug consumption. The current study will use a randomized control trial. Participants with ADAPs will be allocated to one of two treatment conditions: experimental condition: Standard batterer intervention program (SBIP) plus individualized motivational plan focused in ADAPs (SBIP+ ADAPs-IMP), and control condition: Standard batterer intervention program plus individualized motivational plan (SBIP+IMP). Primary/final outcomes will be recidivism and ADAPs reduction. Secondary/proximal outcomes will include treatment adherence related variables, violence related attitudes and attributions, self-control and psychological adjustment. Outcome variables will be assessed at baseline, at the end of the intervention, and at six months after the intervention will be finished.

Mindfulness for Alcohol Abusing Offenders

Over half of state and federal prisoners meet clinical criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence, and after release from prison, over three-quarters of offenders are re-arrested within five years. Thus, there is a critical need for more effective interventions that could help disrupt this insidious cycle of alcohol abuse, criminal behavior, and incarceration. This project will support the development and evaluation of a mindfulness intervention for female prison inmates that will target key neuropsychological vulnerabilities that are associated with relapse and recidivism.
