The Dortmund Vital Study: Impact of Biological and Lifestyle Factors on Cognitive Performace and Work Ability

The goal of the Dortmund Vital Study is to validate previous hypotheses and to generate and validate new hypotheses about the relationship of ageing, working conditions, genetic makeup, stress, metabolic functions, cardiovascular system, immune system, and mental performance over the lifespan with a focus on healthy working adults. The Dortmund Vital Study is a multidisciplinary longitudinal study involving the Departments of Ergonomics, Immunology, Psychology and Neurosciences, and Toxicology of the Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors at the TU Dortmund (IfADo) in Dortmund, Germany, as well as several national and international cooperation partners.

Modulation of Attention in Event Related Potential (ERPs) as a Marker of Early Cognitive Decline by Ginkgo Biloba

The objective of this study is to simultaneously establish the metrological characteristics of the new executive function markers (decision making and multiple flow management) derived from repeated ERP variations and to identify their ability to test whether a short treatment using Ginkgo biloba versus placebo extracts can modify the cognitive performance and functional capacity of patients in the very early stages of age-related cognitive decline. This trial, using subjects as their own control (cross-over) in repeated measurements will establish the reproducibility characteristics of the measurements and intra-individual variations of ERP over time in this population

ArtontheBrain: An Inclusive Evidence-based Cognitive Health App for Older Adults to Promote Aging at Home

The research proposed here will evaluate whether a web-based recreation intervention, called ArtontheBrain, has positive health benefits to older adult users. ArtontheBrain incorporates three basic activities; learning (history of the artwork), play (telling stories, solving puzzles) and socializing with other users, either in person or online. It can be used alone, with another person, or in a group. It is modeled after participatory arts-based interventions which studies have shown are associated with health benefits in older adults, such as improved sense of well-being, physical health, decreased risk of dementia, and reduced need for health services. Our study will test ArtontheBrain at research sites and health agencies in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. with older adults with and without cognitive decline. The study will also examine how well that app can support different user play modalities and whether it can effect positive health outcomes similar to face-to-face arts interventions.

Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Program at OHSU Hospital

The purpose of this investigation is to assess the effectiveness of a multi-disciplinary Acute Care for Elders (ACE) program dedicated to the care of patients age 70 and older admitted to Oregon Health & Science University's hospital medicine service. The ACE program will aim to improve the quality of care of older patients in the investigators hospital by implementing focused interventions and recommendations specific to geriatric needs and syndromes, including: reduced fall rate, decreased incidence and duration of delirium, early recognition and treatment of impaired mobility and function, careful minimization of medication use, prevention of unnecessary catheter and restraint use, decreased hospital readmission rates, improved transitional care following hospital discharge, and high levels of patient and referring physician satisfaction. Additionally, the ACE program aims to improve resident and student competence in treating geriatric syndromes, and to improve staff and learner satisfaction with caring for older adults. ACE programs have been well studied at other institutions, so the investigators will be implementing a program that is already standard of care, and studying the elements that are unique to OHSU. This will be a quality improvement project. Study participants will be a convenience sample of OHSU faculty, staff, residents and students who are employed by or on rotation with General Medicine Team 1 of the Medicine Teaching Service. Faculty, staff, and learners (ACE team members) will receive the ACE training. Study personnel will conduct prospective and retrospective chart review of patients admitted to the ACE service to determine outcomes as noted above.

n-3 PUFA for Vascular Cognitive Aging

Brain scans can help identify changes that appear to increase risk for cognitive decline and dementia. Some of these brain changes are thought to reflect actual damage to the small blood vessels that support normal brain function. This clinical trial will determine whether an omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) therapy can promote brain health by supporting the small blood vessels in the brain over 3 years in older adults at high risk for cognitive decline and dementia of Alzheimer's type.
