Helping Educate and Advance Learning Through Healthy Bite-Sized Eating Strategies

The goal of this clinical trial is to compare the effectiveness of a mobile health intervention in adolescents (14-17 years) with overweight or obesity. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: 1) is a digital-based diet quality intervention for adolescents with overweight or obesity feasible and 2) is there preliminary effectiveness in improving diet quality? Participants will: 1. Complete three-day 24-hour dietary recalls 2. Collect urine samples 3. Wear a continuous glucose monitor, sleep tracker, and physical activity tracker Researchers will compare control and intervention groups to see if diet quality and meal timing traits improve as assessed by 24-hour dietary recalls, a novel urine biomarker, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

Hypertension in High School Students

Hypertension and obesity in the young population are major risk factors for renal and cardiovascular events, which could arise in adulthood. A candidate-gene approach will be applied in a cohort observational study, in which investigators will collect data from high school adolescent students. Participants underwent anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, as well as saliva and urine sample collection for genomic DNA extraction and renal function evaluation, respectively. Candidate genes previously implicated in salt-sensitive hypertension in adults will be tested to verify impact on blood pressure (BP) also among adolescents. Since inflammatory mechanisms may be involved in pathophysiology of hypertension and in endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis through reactive oxygen species, the baseline urinary excretion of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in a subgroup of adolescents stratified according to ADD1 (alpha adducin) rs4961 genotypes will be assessed.

Digital Intervention to Improve Physical Activity Behaviour In Overweight and Obese Adolescents

This is a study protocol to test the feasibility of a digital intervention aiming to increase physical activity in overweight and obese adolescents. This study will be conducted in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. The intervention will be provided in two public schools. Another two public schools, which will be matched on the basis of similar socioeconomic background of attending students and curriculum structure, will act as control group. Additional schools may be recruited to fulfil required sample size. A digital behaviour change intervention (FIT-TEENS) will be delivered to overweight and obese adolescents (aged 13-18 years) using an online learning platform (EdApp) over 10 weeks to provide information on physical activity and the behaviour change aspects towards physical activity. The participants who received the intervention will be compared with the control group, where no intervention will be delivered, who will be requested to continue their usual physical activities. To determine the feasibility of the intervention, the researchers will obtain views and overall satisfaction from participants on the intervention and trial, and determine the proportion of participants who completed all intervention modules and outcome measures. In addition to feasibility measures, participants' physical activity behaviour, self-efficacy and social support, as well as body weight and composition will be compared between the two groups. This study will establish whether FIT-TEENS intervention is feasible and acceptable to overweight and obese adolescents in increasing their physical activity behaviour.

#BabyLetsMove Physical Activity Feasibility Trial

Black adolescents who are pregnant represent a high-risk and understudied perinatal population in health research. Adolescent pregnancy (<20 years) is disproportionately prevalent among Blacks compared with Whites and is a prominent risk factor for obesity. Fortunately, metabolic consequences of increasing physical activity coupled with minimal sedentary time can mitigate biological imperils and behavioral interventions targeting perinatal populations have demonstrated efficacy for this approach. Intervention studies to promote physical activity and reduce sedentarism among Black, perinatal adolescents in disadvantaged, rural settings may be a promising strategy to prevent obesity and reduce disparities. In the proposed study, investigators will assess the feasibility and acceptability of #BabyLetsMove, a mobile health intervention targeting three behavioral goals: (1) limit TV time to less than 2 hours a day (sedentary behavior); (2) take 10,000 steps or more per day (physical activity); and (3) do 20 minutes or more of structured activity like prenatal yoga or dance videos per day (exercise). In the #BabyLetsMove feasibility trial investigators aim to conduct a single-arm, 4-week pilot with 20 Black adolescents (15- to 19-years) enrolled in Mississippi's Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to test the intervention's feasibility and acceptability. Participants will receive one text message per day for 4-weeks targeting behavior change strategies and two health coaching sessions via mobile phone; an introduction session in week one and a problem-solving session in week three. Investigators will also use qualitative interviewing with additional adolescents (n=20) to solicit user feedback regarding the acceptability of intervention content and materials. Finally, in preparation for a pilot study using an effectiveness-implementation hybrid study design, investigators will conduct a pre-implementation evaluation using quantitative surveying (n=6 surveys) with WIC providers (n=60) to better under the culture and climate of WIC. Investigators hypothesize the #BabyLetsMove intervention will be acceptable to adolescents and a future pilot randomized controlled trial will be feasible. Investigators also anticipate identifying modifiable barriers and facilitators to implementing the intervention through WIC, which will help to design an implementation strategy with a high likelihood for uptake by WIC.

Childhood Obesity - Prevention of Diabetes Through Changed Eating Patterns

The main purpose of the present study is to perform a 10 weeks dietary intervention study with a follow-up for 52 weeks in children from 7-14 years of age with overweight or obesity. In a caloric restricted and increased physical activity setting the control group will consume a low-moderate protein (15E%/day) diet whereas the intervention group will consume a higher protein (25E%/day) diet. Furthermore, the investigators want to investigate the effect of frequent follow-up after intervention. Compared to the low-moderate protein diet, the investigators hypothesis that a diet with higher consumption of protein-containing foods will more effectively induce weight loss (a reduction in BMI-SDS) or weight maintenance in children with overweight or obesity, and improve risk factors for type 2 diabetes and Quality of Life.
