Filter by:The study aims: - to observe a population particularly exposed by the past to brain trauma and concussion: Motorsport Pilots who are retired from a professional practice of motor sport; - to report results of their neuro-cognitive evaluations, - to determine if specific profiles emerge. - to evaluate potential consequences of these traumas' history at a cerebral, physical and psychological level. - to evaluate the contribution of the various examinations performed as part of a concussion assessment in routine care (eye-tracking, brain imaging, Neuropsychological Assessment).
The goal of this project is to strengthen residual corticospinal tract (CST) connections after partial injury using combined motor cortex and spinal cord stimulation to improve arm and hand function after spinal cord injury (SCI). To do this, the investigators will test the combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation (tsDCS) in individuals with chronic cervical SCI.
3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, known as statins, are widely used to reduce levels of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. As lipid-lowering drugs, statins exert neuroprotective effects on ischemic stroke. this study will investigate whether the protective effect of statins is mediated by their ability to impact inflammation and oxygen free radical levels in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. Could Statins affect the neuroinflamation which occurs after traumatic brain injury?
People who lose function of the lower limb due to spinal cord injury (SCI) need to use their arms for activities of daily life especially during weight-bearing tasks, such as transfers, and manual wheelchair (MWC) propulsion in order to maintain mobility. Persistent use of the upper limbs constitutes biomechanical difficulties, especially in the shoulder joint. The most commonly affected area in the shoulder is supraspinatus and biceps tendon. Four different stoke patterns have been classified in MWC users. Distinct amounts of force may be applied to the shoulder joint during propulsion with different stroke patterns and this can affect the shoulder tendons in different rates. In this study, investigators aimed to evaluate and compare the acute sonographic changes in supraspinatus and biceps tendons after a wheelchair propelling test in MWC users with SCI with different stroke patterns. Also, it is intended to determine the risk factors related to the stroke patterns that may be associated with these sonographic changes.
This single case series feasibility study is designed to investigate the feasibility of remote recruitment and delivery of a brief visuospatial interference intervention for decreasing the number of intrusive memories of trauma among trauma-exposed women in Iceland. The current study is an extension on two studies already preregistered (NCT04209283 and NCT04342416) that included some aspects of in-person recruitment and/or intervention delivery (rather than fully remote as we aim for here). The intervention is a simple cognitive task (a memory cue followed by playing the computer game "Tetris") with accompanying information. A within-subjects multiple baseline AB design is used, in that the length of baseline ('A'; no intervention) and intervention ('B') phases vary within-subjects across individual intrusive trauma memories. Participants will aim to complete at least one week of the baseline ('A') phase followed by at least two intervention sessions with a researcher remotely (via telephone or secure video platform). Intervention sessions comprise the simple cognitive task alongside accompanying information presented in the form of brief animated videos (e.g., explaining the target symptom). Participants are instructed that they may continue using the technique self-guided in subsequent weeks, and they may opt for additional intervention sessions with remote researcher support (maximum 6 intervention sessions). Participants will be asked to monitor the occurrence of intrusive memories of trauma in a daily diary. It is predicted that participants will report fewer total intrusive memories in the fifth week after the second intervention session (primary outcome) compared to in the first baseline week. The investigators will also explore whether the frequency of targeted intrusive memories is going to decrease relative to non-targeted intrusive memories. Furthermore, the investigators will explore whether having fewer intrusive memories is related to functioning and/or PTSD, depressive or anxiety symptoms.
Many adults with spinal cord injury (SCI) suffer from long-term debilitating neuropathic pain. Available treatments, including opioids, are ineffective at eliminating this pain. Based on preliminary data from Dr Morse and from Dr Van de Winckel, we have demonstrated that brain areas that are important for body awareness and pain perception (parietal operculum, insula) have weaker brain connectivity in adults with spinal cord injury than in able-bodied healthy adults and that Cognitive Multisensory Rehabilitation (CMR) can restore these networks. This study uses a cross-over study for adults with SCI and a comparison of baseline outcomes in adults with SCI vs able-bodied healthy adults to address two aims: AIM 1: Determine baseline differences in resting-state and task-based fMRI activation and connectivity in adults with SCI compared to able-bodied healthy controls. AIM 2: Identify changes in brain activation and connectivity, as well as behavioral outcomes in pain and body awareness in adults with SCI after CMR versus standard of care.
The aim of this study is to provide critical information about the efficacy of Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) to decrease the experience of neuropathic pain in the upper and lower extremities of people with a spinal cord injury.
The Up-LIFT Study is a prospective, single-arm study designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of non-invasive electrical spinal cord stimulation (ARC Therapy) administered by the LIFT System to treat upper extremity functional deficits in people with chronic tetraplegia.
The investigators plan to evaluate long-term consequences of unintentional dural puncture in women who had this complication during labor epidural insertion at Mount Sinai Hospital. A dural puncture is the perforation of the dura mater (one of the layers protecting the brain and the spinal cord) by the needle that is used to find and place a catheter in the epidural space. A puncture will cause a leakage of cerebrospinal fluid through the dura that results in an acute and usually self-limited headache in half of patients who have this complication. The usual treatment for this complication is conservative with the use of oral medications like acetaminophen, anti-inflammatory and narcotics. In the severely symptomatic patient, the injection of blood in the epidural space is a more invasive approach performed to "patch" the hole that was created in the dura (epidural blood patch). The objective is to determine whether or not there is a risk of developing long-term effects from the unintentional dural puncture and its treatment by epidural blood patch by comparing women who had a dural puncture during their labour epidural insertion with or without an epidural blood patch with women who received an epidural but did not have a dural puncture during the same period of time. The hypothesis is that women who had unintentional dural punctures during epidural insertion will develop long-term effects such as chronic headache, chronic backache, chronic auditory or visual disturbances and chronic disability more frequently than women who received an epidural but did not sustain a dural puncture. The investigators also hypothesize that the use of epidural blood patch may change the course of these complications.
Given the high recurrence of urolithiasis in patients, the search for less aggressive and preventive treatments is increasingly necessary. Renalof® is presented as an alternative to herbal medicine being a product that, due to its diuretic and demineralization properties of kidney stones, has been widely used in this patient population, disintegrating and eliminating calcium oxalate and struvite stones in a painless in the genitourinary system. With the objective of determining the efficacy of this therapy, an observational, prospective, randomized, single-blind, two-arm study was carried out: treatment group with Renalof® and control group, placebo.
