Time Needed to Perform Intermittent Catheterization in Adults With Spinal Cord Injuries

This study investigates the burden of intermittent catheterization in adult individuals with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) following spinal cord injury (SCI). Individuals will be recruited to compare two types of catheters. Each participant will use a non-hydrophilic catheter at one time point and a hydrophilic catheter at a different time point to perform intermittent catheterization. The order that participants use either a non-hydrophilic or a hydrophilic catheter will be determined randomly. The purpose of the study is to provide evidence for time spent on bladder management (performing intermittent catheterization) as well as consumer satisfaction on using both catheters.

Efficacy of Steroids on Functional Outcomes After Musculoskeletal Injuries of the Hand

Steroids are often prescribed for their anti-inflammatory effects in patients with musculoskeletal injuries. Studies have shown that steroids may reduce pain and swelling, but their effects on range of motion and functional outcomes have not been illustrated. With this study, we aim to evaluate the effect of steroids on range of motion and functional outcomes in non-operatively managed musculoskeletal injuries of the hand.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the rate and outcomes of COVID-19 associated acute kidney injury (AKI) and use of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in critically ill COVID-19 patients in ICUs in several large hospitals in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. We will also explore the associations between several baseline risk factors for AKI, therapeutic strategies and COVID-19 related clinical signs and the occurrence of AKI and use of KRT.

The study is a randomized parallel controlled study. Patients receive a review of which main content includes symptom improvement, lung function improvement, and adverse events.

Evaluation of an Adapted ACT Group for Stroke & Brain Injury Survivors

Stroke and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) represent a major cause of long-term disability among survivors. Many psychological difficulties can also occur including: depression, anxiety, fatigue, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This has a marked impact on health service usage. Despite certain interventions being offered to support stroke survivors and individuals with brain injury, there is still an outstanding need to increase and improve psychological resources for this population. This research proposes to evaluate the effectiveness of a group therapy intervention, using a model called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), for stroke survivors and adults with ABI. This ACT group aims to promote positive adjustment and improve wellbeing, whilst also aiming to reduce levels of distress. The research will comprise of two parts (one quantitative and the other qualitative).

Score Predicting Lesion Development on CT Following Mild TBI

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is one of the most common reasons behind emergency department (ED) visits. A small portion of mTBI patients will develop an intracranial lesion that might require neurosurgical intervention. Several guidelines have been developed to help direct these patients for head Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning, but they lack specificity, mainly focus on ruling out lesions, and do not estimate the risk of lesion development. The aim of this retrospective observational study is to create a risk stratification score that predicts the likelihood of intracranial lesion development, lesion progression, and need for neurosurgical management in patients with mTBI presenting to the ED. Eligible patients are adults (≥ 15 years) with mTBI (defined as admission Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) 13-15) who presented to the ED within 24 hours of injury to any ED in Stockholm, Sweden between 2010-2020. Reasons for ED visit and Internal Classification of Disease (ICD) codes will be used to screen for patients. Machine-learning models will be applied. The primary outcome will be a traumatic lesion on head CT, defined as a cerebral contusion, subdural haematoma, epidural haematoma, subarachnoid haemorrhage, intraventricular haemorrhage, diffuse axonal injury, skull fracture, traumatic infarction or sinus thrombosis. The secondary outcomes will be any clinically significant lesion, defined as an intracranial finding that led to neurosurgical intervention, discontinuation or reversal of anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, hospital admission > 48 hours due to the TBI, or death.

Restoring Hemodynamic Stability Using Targeted Epidural Spinal Stimulation Following Spinal Cord Injury

The purpose of this study is to stimulate the circuits in the spinal cord that are directly responsible for hemodynamic control to restore hemodynamic stability in patients with chronic cervical or high-thoracic spinal cord injury. The ultimate objective of this feasibility study is to provide preliminary safety and efficacy measures on the ability of the hemodynamic Targeted Epidural Spinal Stimulation (TESS) to ensure the long-term management of hemodynamic instability and reduce the incidence and severity of orthostatic hypotension and autonomic dysreflexia episodes in humans with chronic cervical or high-thoracic spinal cord injury. In addition, the long-term safety and efficacy of TESS on cardiovascular health, respiratory function, spasticity, trunk stability and quality of life in patients with chronic spinal cord injury will be evaluated.
