Exercise Effects on Adipose Tissue Structure and Function

Participants will be randomized into one of two different experimental groups: 1) Exercise group and 2) No exercise (control group). Subject participation in the study will involve a series of metabolic tests before and after participants undergo a 10% weight loss program (with or without exercise training depending on group randomization). After completing this weight loss portion of the study, participants will then be required to adhere to a high calorie diet program to regain half of the weight the participant lost - followed by the same series of metabolic tests.

Baropodometric Parameters Variation With Body Weight Loss

Background: One of the major public health problems of the 21st century is obesity. Baropodometry is commonly used to determine specific loads on the plantar surface of the foot and the comportment of the body center of pressure (CoP). To evaluate the redistribution of the baropodometric parameters: static and dynamic plantar pressures and antero - posterior CoP, by decreasing body weight. Methods: A sample of 43 overweight subjects (24 male, 19 female) would be recruited for the study. A hypocaloric diet would be designed with the aim to reduce participants body weight. The baropodometric exam would performed in two occasions: weight 1 - Session 1 and weight 2 - Session 2, when participants lost between 12 and 18 kg. The foot would be divided in 9 areas: heel, midfoot, 5 metatarsal heads (MTHs), Hallux, 2-5 toes. The Footwork® pressure platform would be used to carry out the evaluation.

The mechanisms regulating fat mass homeostasis are incompletely understood although recent animal and human trials would suggest that there is a leptin independent regulatory pathway which may play a role in weight control and maintenance. Although evidence would suggest that external loading in patients with obesity may promote body weight loss, this has not been explored in patients following bariatric surgery. The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanisms regulating weight loss and the potential role of the 'gravitostat' in fat free mass retention in patients following bariatric surgery.

Techniques for Abdominoplasty After Massive Weight Loss

Excess skin on the abdomen is a common problem for many individuals after massive weight loss. The surgical procedure of abdominoplasty is intended to remove excess skin and improve the shape of the torso in abdomen, in order to address issues such as skin fold eczema, difficulties finding clothing, and psychosocial issues. The investigators will conduct a randomized, controlled trial where individuals with excess skin on the abdomen will be randomized to either standard abdominoplasty or abdominoplasty in combination with liposuction. The investigators will examine the rate of complications, and the functional and aesthetical outcomes of the two methods.

Noom Health for Weight Management

The goals of the study are to use the Noom mobile app to help individuals with weight loss and weight loss maintenance. This project will test the comparative efficacy of Noom Health vs. Noom Digital Health for weight loss, quality of life, psychosocial functioning, and self-reported health status. It is expected that use of Noom Health will show post-intervention success relative to Noom Digital Health as well as long-term success with weight loss maintenance. Data is expected to show that participants who are older, have less support, have more health conditions, and with more psychosocial problems will benefit more from Noom Health. It is also expected that confidence in the ability to lose weight will produce more successful results in Noom Health vs. Noom Digital Health.
