Filter by:Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions and threatens both health and quality of life of people around the world. While many individuals succeed at short term weight loss, weight loss maintenance is the greatest barrier to successful treatment of obesity. High levels of physical activity are consistently associated with success in weight loss maintenance. The major goal of this proposal is to understand how and why high levels of physical activity are critical for long term maintenance of weight loss. This project takes advantage of the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), which follows over 6000 individuals who have maintained a weight loss of ≥30 pounds for ≥1 year. Understanding how individuals successful at weight loss maintenance achieve energy balance will provide important insight into strategies to help more people sustain a weight loss.
The study will test the effectiveness of a culturally sensitive, evidence-based, multi-component, behavioral program for treating obesity called Health-Smart. This program is being implemented by Community Health Workers at the primary care centers and followed by either of two physician-implemented behavioral counseling programs to prevent weight gain--programs that are implemented quarterly over 12 months.
This is a pilot project to determine the feasibility of recruiting, enrolling, treating, and following 24 older sleeve gastrectomy patients into a randomized controlled trial (RCT) examining the efficacy of bisphosphonate use versus placebo in the prevention of surgical weight loss associated loss of bone mass and quality.
The primary aim of this study is to is to determine if intermittent fasting (IMF) is an effective dietary strategy for treatment of obesity. A 1 year randomized trial will be used to compare weight loss generated by IMF versus Daily Caloric Restriction (DCR). The targeted weekly energy deficit is designed to be similar (~30%) and a comprehensive behavioral support program will be provided to both groups. The primary outcome is weight change at the end of the 1 year intervention; follow up measures will also be obtained 6 months after completing the intervention. This study will provide robust data regarding weight loss effectiveness of IMF and will further our understanding of the impact of IMF on energy balance.
Excess weight is a major risk factor underlying leading causes of death globally, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. Among participants assigned to the same lifestyle intervention arms in prior weight loss randomized controlled trials, large inter-individual differences in weight loss success have been observed, ranging from >50lbs of weight loss to >10lbs of weight gain. Both genetic and non-genetic factors underlying differential adherence and weight loss success are poorly understood.

The aim of this study is to examine a novel weight loss formula with and without common stimulants on anthropometry and indices of cardiovascular disease risk.
This is a randomized controlled trial studying the effects of time-restricted eating (TRE) on weight loss in obese humans. Obesity is the number one risk factor for type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and numerous studies demonstrate that weight loss is an effective strategy to prevent T2DM and improve the metabolic health of people diagnosed with T2DM. Unfortunately, classical calorie restriction diets often fail to produce long-term weight loss due to low compliance, reduced resting metabolic rate (RMR), and other factors. Therefore, novel dieting techniques must be explored in order to successfully treat obesity and prevent T2DM. Studies in mice provide compelling evidence that feeding/fasting cycles can be altered to produce beneficial effects on weight loss and metabolic health markers in the absence of calorie restriction. Limited research in human subjects suggests that this feeding paradigm may translate to human health as well, however, more research needs to be done in order to confirm this hypothesis. This study will determine if TRE can lead to weight loss in obese human subjects. Secondary outcomes include changes in body composition, HOMA-IR, hormonal and biochemical serum markers, RMR, and total energy expenditure (TEE).
In the present study, the investigators aim to investigate postprandial physiology in patients who have had the Aspire Assist® inserted. This will involve a standardised mixed meal test (MMT) with subsequent aspiration of gastric content compared to MMT without aspiration. Furthermore, a comparison will be made between the aspiration group and a control group in order to evaluate whether continuous treatment with aspiration therapy affect the postprandial physiology. The primary outcomes of the trial are differences in postprandial plasma/serum glucose, insulin and gut hormone excursions during MMT with and without aspiration. Secondary outcomes encompass evaluation of satiety, gastric emptying and gallbladder motility following MMT with and without aspiration. Also, food intake during a subsequent ad libitum meal will be evaluated.
This is a six months intervention study in non-diabetic overweight and obese subjects. Subjects will be counseled for weight loss through diet and exercise. Diet and exercise will be recommended as per the regular norms for weight loss (weight loss ≥10% from baseline weight will be considered as a significant loss of weight) for overweight and obese subjects. A sample size of 90 subjects was calculated but assuming a drop out rate of 20%, 110 subjects will be enrolled. Enrolled subjects will be measured at every visit (monthly) for weight, body composition measures of abdominal obesity and skin folds. They would be assessed for compliance with diet and exercise. Detailed analysis of body composition including DXA, biochemical analysis will be performed at enrollment and after six months intervention. Statistical analysis will be performed to find association between measures of body composition for weight loss and genotypes of the VDR polymorphisms.
