Filter by:This 18 week, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial will examine the effects of thick dietary fibre (PGX) supplementation of a low calorie diet (LCD) on appetite, weight loss, body composition, and compliance in overweight and moderately obese female. The investigators believe that 15 grams/day PGX supplementation of a low calorie diet over a 14-weeks period will elicit a better appetite score (e.g. reduced hunger) compared to the rice flour supplementation of the LCD.
The investigators here propose to perform a prospective randomized intervention trial in post-menopausal women to investigate the endocrine network, which contributes to the changes in skeletal muscle mass during weight loss.
The purpose of this study is to provide weight loss interventions for Mothers participating in the WIC program, using the internet to deliver weight loss materials.
Since a few years the SAGB-VC is used in our clinic. This type of band has a number of advantages when compared to the earlier versions of the adjustable gastric band (AGB), reducing the chances on leakage, tube disconnection and port problems. In our clinic the follow up is strict. All patients are required to follow a special follow-up program in which the patient is seen 19 times during the first two years after SAGB-VC placement. This is the first retrospective clinical study of a large study population of >800 patients in which a SAGB-VC was placed. This study was conducted to evaluate the results and the efficiency of the SAGB-VC in our clinic.
The purpose of this study is to examine whether we can use social networks to spread health information and health behaviors that 1) support women in returning to their pre-pregnancy weight after delivery; and 2) promote healthy infant feeding practices.

The purpose of this study is to compare standard Behavior Therapy (BT), BT plus Meal Replacements (MR) and a condition focusing on the nutritional changes to the home food environment (HFE) on weight loss, weight loss maintenance, nutritional composition of the diet and psychosocial outcomes. A second aim is to determine the degree to which the specific targets of the experimental interventions do in fact change in the anticipated direction during the intervention and to evaluate whether such changes might account for improvements in weight loss maintenance. This study is important because it could provide the first evidence that the current standard of care for obesity lifestyle treatment could be improved by the addition of MRs or a program of comprehensive nutritional change.
Rates of overweight and obesity are increasing, particularly among individuals aged 18 to 29. An estimated 25-35% of American college and university students are overweight or obese. Contingency Management (CM) is a behavioral intervention that provides tangible rewards for positive behaviors. CM has substantial evidence of efficacy in reducing smoking and drug use and increasing treatment retention and medication compliance. The current study will evaluate the efficacy of a 24-week CM intervention to promote weight loss in overweight and obese university students. Seventy participants with a body mass index (BMI) of 27.0-34.9 will be randomly assigned to one of two conditions: (a) LEARN, a manual guided behavioral weight loss program (Brownell, 2004), with weigh-ins and supportive counseling, or (b) LEARN with weigh-ins and supportive counseling plus CM. Participants in the CM condition will earn chances to win prizes each week in which they lose at least one pound. Once they lose 5% of baseline body weight, they will earn chances to win prizes for weight loss or weight maintenance. Additional chances can be earned by completing activities that promote weight loss. The primary outcomes will be absolute and proportional weight loss from pre- to post-treatment, as well as proportion of participants achieving clinically significant weight loss (>5% of baseline weight) and proportion moving into a lower risk BMI category. Secondary outcomes will include length of retention in the study, increase in physical activity level, and improvement in nutritional quality of diet. Effects of the CM intervention on psychiatric distress and self-efficacy and motivation to engage in activities that promote weight loss will also be assessed. We predict that participants in the CM condition will lose more weight than participants assigned to the LEARN program without CM, and that more CM participants will achieve clinically significant weight loss. We also predict that participants in the CM condition will remain in the program longer, show larger increases in physical activity, show greater improvements in diet quality, and have greater increases in levels of self-efficacy and motivation than comparison group participants. Mediators and moderators of CM outcomes will also be evaluated. If efficacious in promoting weight loss in a college population, CM could help to prevent or delay later development of obesity-related medical problems.
Weight loss surgery is the most effective weight loss treatment available, but the direct effect on chronic kidney disease is less widely understood. Early research shows some improvement in kidney function may occur and candidacy for kidney transplantation can be improved with weight loss following surgery. To date, no randomised controlled trial has been performed to examine the effect of weight loss surgery on the progression of chronic kidney disease. This randomised trial will allocate patients to either lifestyle modification with diet, exercise and pharmacotherapy, or weight loss surgery to remove two thirds of the stomach using the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedure. This study aims to evaluate weight loss surgery vs lifestyle modification in patients with chronic kidney disease with estimated kidney function of 20-60% and morbid obesity (BMI 35-45) in terms of kidney function, cardiovascular disease risk factors and all-cause mortality.
Sixty percent of patients with difficult to control asthma seen in our outpatient clinic are obese. The impact of weight reduction in this subpopulation of asthmatics has not been studied. Our aim is to evaluate the impact of weight reduction on asthma control of these patients.
