The wEight Management in Renal Transplant Online Study (ExeRTiOn)

The primary aim of this project is to create an online weight management tool (Physical activity, weight management and cognitive behavioral therapy) to prevent significant weight gain following kidney transplantation. Designing the online interactive weight management resource for kidney transplant patients will involve patient and health care professional input through Qualitative methodology such as 'Think-Aloud' interviews and one-to-one semi-structured interviews. This online resource will be called "exertion" and will be created by the research team, with technical support from the Software Company (SPIKA). Results from this study will refine the resource, and lead to a study application for a randomized controlled feasibility trial where we plan to test the "exertion" online application. Therefore this project has potential to influence clinical practice for kidney transplant recipients. It will allow patients, who may not have routine access to physio or dietetic input to address weight gain with support. A study flow chart summarizing the project can be found below.

The investigators will study the influence of initial fat cell size/number and adipose function (in particular lipolysis) on weight development over very long time periods (years). By comparing investigations of fat biopsies or blood samples obtained at baseline, the investigators will determine the association between adipose morphology/function and changes in weight or development of metabolic complications (e.g. metabolic syndrome, glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension).

Effects of Sugary Drink Warning Labels

The primary objective of this study is to determine to what degree sugary drink warning labels increase consumers' knowledge about the potential health harms of sugary drinks and reduce sugary drink intake. The study is designed to answer three additional questions: 1) Do some warning labels work better than others? 2) What is the effect of warning labels over time? 3) If warning labels influence behavior, is it because they increase knowledge or simply provide a salient reminder that some drinks are less healthy? This study will test the effect of repeated exposure to warning labels on total calories purchased over time and assess whether knowledge or salience better explain label effects.

Testing the Influence of Different Sugary Drink Warning Label Designs

The aim of this study is to compare different sugary drink labels to see which most influence knowledge, beliefs, purchase intentions and choices. Parents of children ages 6-11 will shop in a virtual convenience store after being randomized to 1 of 4 conditions: 1) calorie labels; 2) text warning labels; 3) graphic sugar warning labels; or 4) graphic health warning. This study will provide data comparing the influence of sugary drink text warning labels and two kinds of graphic warning labels.

Effect of Hindmilk on Growth Velocity of Very Preterm Infants

Research question: Does feeding hindmilk improve weight gain in very preterm infants with poor growth velocity? Hypothesis: In very preterm infants (born less than 32 weeks gestation) with poor postnatal growth velocity (<15 g/kg/day), feeding hindmilk would improve average weight gain by at least 4 g/kg per day. Effect of Moderate Caloric Restriction on Glomerular Growth After Kidney Transplantation

One possible reason that weight gain after transplant may interfere with new kidney function is due to the enlargement of a kidney structure called the glomerulus. The researchers believe that modest caloric intake reduction (CIR) early after kidney transplantation can reduce the enlargement (hypertrophy) of the glomerulus associated with kidney transplantation and may improve long term allograft survival, by reducing glomerular hypertrophy mediated progressive glomerulosclerosis.
