Filter by:There is suggestive evidence that vitamin C and vitamin D deficiency may increase blood pressure across the range of blood pressures from normal to elevated. Information about this relationship is inadequate in part because of the rarity of individuals with subclinical vitamin C and D deficiency. The investigators have observed subnormal to deficient plasma vitamin C and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in a large proportion of patients under active treatment in the investigators' hospital. The clinical implications of widespread hypovitaminosis C and D are unknown. In this randomized prospective comparison trial the investigators will measure vitamin levels and blood pressure in clinically stable acutely hospitalized patients with a wide range of diagnoses, and expected to remain in the hospital for at least 7 more days. The investigators will examine for an inverse relationship between baseline vitamin level and blood pressure across the range of blood pressures. Consenting patients will be randomized to receive vitamin C (500 mg twice daily) or vitamin D (1000 IU twice daily) for as long as 10 days. Blood pressure will be re-measured every 2 days and vitamin levels re-measured on the last study day. Treatment courses of at least 5 days will be considered sufficient for analysis. The hypothesis is that either treatment will reduce blood pressure in patients whose baseline systolic blood pressure is 110 or more; the investigators will also examine whether the reduction in blood pressure with treatment is proportional to the increase in the circulating vitamin level with treatment.
While vitamin D supplementation is safe and effective in repleting vitamin D levels in dialysis patients, the impact on anemia is unknown. The majority of hemodialysis patients require erythropoietin supplementation to maintain their serum hemoglobin between 11 and 12 gm/dL, a drug that is both costly and associated with significant side effects. If repletion of vitamin D significantly decreases erythropoietin requirements in hemodialysis patients, it would result in a substantial reduction in patient care costs. Our aim is to study the impact of ergocalciferol supplementation in hemodialysis patients with 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency. The investigators anticipate approximately 30% reduction in erythropoietin dose requirement in our hemodialysis population.
The purpose of this study is to determine if 14-19 year old African American adolescents are able to take a daily vitamin D supplement daily for about 4 months and how well a daily dose of 400 IU or 2000 IU vitamin D supplement raises their vitamin D blood level.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of vitamin D3 supplementation on the insulin resistance in non-diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 3-4, vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency and elevated fasting serum insulin levels.
People with heart failure may have low magnesium and low vitamin D levels. They may also have abnormally high levels of parathyroid hormones. Magnesium and vitamin D are important chemicals that are not routinely measured in blood tests. We are studying how many people with heart failure have low levels of magnesium and vitamin D. We are also studying how many people with heart failure have overactive parathyroid glands and if that is related to their vitamin D levels.
This intervention study will address the impact of vitamin D fortified milk and vitamin D supplements on the growth, levels of vitamin D, insulin-like growth factor 1, growth hormone, academic attention, respiratory infections, asthma, and flexural dermatitis (a proxy for eczema) of Mongolian children.
The objective of this study is to assess whether vitamin D supplements are sufficient to increase females who are deficient or borderline deficient in vitamin D levels to normal levels.
Overall research aims: This study will examine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the function of the endothelium and microcirculation of patients with chronic kidney disease and vitamin D deficiency. Hypothesis: Vitamin D therapy in patients with CKD and concomitant vitamin D deficiency will improve endothelial, and therefore microcirculatory function, reduce levels of oxidative stress and thus reduce the risk of future CVS events in this population.
The purpose of the study is to assess the relationship between vitamin D status and insulin- glucose dynamics in obese Adolescents. The study is intended to assess the difference in the insulin sensitivity before and after correction of vitamin D deficiency.
Sub-clinical vitamin D deficiency is a commonly unrecognized disorder in obese adolescents. The investigators hypothesize vitamin D deficiency will be highly prevalent in obese adolescents and those who are vitamin D deficient will be more insulin resistant.
