Evaluation of a Digital Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support Program

The goal of this study is to examine the efficacy of an integrated solution, defined as a combination of the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 14-day CGM sensor and the Omada care team's receipt of real-time, continuous glucose data from the sensor and incorporation of this data into their care delivery within the context of the Omada for Diabetes program for adults with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). This randomized control trial will test the impact of the integrated solution on HbA1c, CGM-derived metrics and other relevant diabetes management outcomes over six months compared to the current standard of care.

Family Diabetes Prevention Program Pilot Study

This study will examine the feasibility and acceptability of a family-oriented augmentation of the Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle intervention (DPP), called the Family DPP. It will also preliminarily examine adult and child health and health behavior outcomes. The DPP is a 12-month, group-based lifestyle intervention for adults at high-risk for type 2 diabetes, in which adult participants learn skills and strategies to achieve the program's goals of 5% weight loss and 150 minutes/week of moderate-vigorous physical activity. The Family DPP will consist of all elements of the evidence-based DPP, along with augmentations including additional child-focused sessions in which adult participants will learn about principles and strategies for promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors in children, ages 5 through 12 years. Children may participate in certain child-focused sessions, too. The non-randomized pilot feasibility study will consists of 2 arms/groups: 1) the concurrent "control" group, consisting of adults who are enrolled in the DPP; and 2) the "intervention" arm, in which the adult participants will engage in the Family DPP (and children may participate in certain aspects of the Family DPP focused on children). The study will recruit 10-15 adult-child dyads, for the "intervention" groups, and 10-15 adults for the concurrent control group. In addition to data collected from adult participants as a routine part of the DPP, the study will examine additional adult health behaviors and health outcomes and child health outcomes (change in body mass index z-score) and health behaviors at baseline, 6 months and 12 months (program end) among participants in the "intervention" group.

Long-term Effect of Moderate and Vigorous Exercise on Incident Diabetes in Obese Subjects

Our previous randomized controlled trial has recruited 220 subjects with central obesity and allocated the subjects to the non-exercise control, moderate exercise and vigorous exercise groups. The purpose of our previous study was to investigate the effect of moderate and vigorous exercise on improvement of fatty liver. Those subjects will be followed up for incident diabetes at 2 year and 10 year since randomization. The subjects will be invited to participate in on-site visit at 2 and 10 year. Questionaire forms will be collected and fasting plasma glucose level and HbA1c were measured. The history of diabetes and anti-diabetic medication will be recorded. The incident diabetes will be evaluated.

This study was conducted with 95 new diagnosed diabetes patients in the Endocrine Polyclinic of a university hospital. Personal Information Form, Diabetes Self-Care Activities Scale and Health Literacy Scale were used to evaluate the data. SPSS 21 program was used in the analysis of the data and a p<0.05 level was considered significant.

The Effect of a Diabetes Self-management Coaching Program for Type 2 Diabetes Patients in the Ethiopian PC.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is the third most prevalent chronic disease globally. It is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose because of impaired insulin production, reduced insulin effectiveness, or both. It is a major contributor for physical disability and impaired quality of life. Diabetic Self-Management programs help to control blood glucose, reduce hospitalization, and increase compliance; however, the program is underutilized in the Primary Care settings globally; due to cognitive, financial, behavioral, and emotional factors. Health coaching is a client-centered self-management approach informed by behavioral change theories to empower individuals to identify their strengths and resources and achieve their health and wellness goals. Purpose: The study's overarching goal is to determine whether implementing the Diabetes Self-Management (DSM) Coaching program can be effective and feasible for individuals with type diabetes in the Ethiopian primary care context. Method: The study will employ a single-blinded feasibility randomized controlled trial followed by a concurrent mixed-method design. A block randomization technique with block size of 4 will be used to allocate eligible participants for the quantitative part. Structured outcome measures will be used to collect data on self-efficacy, self-care practice, and glycated hemoglobin A1c. Qualitative description approach with an in-depth interview method of data collection will be used to explore perspectives of participants, barriers and facilitators, and acceptability of the program. Mean, median and frequencies will be computed. Depending on the normality of the distribution and the number of participants, t-tests, x2 tests, sign tests, and ANOVA will be considered to analyze the data. Inductive qualitative content analysis approach will be followed to analyze qualitative data. Qualitative and quantitative data will be merged at result level for further interpretation and presented in discussion section. Significance: The study will be used to determine the feasibility of the Diabetic Self-Management Coaching program in the Ethiopian primary care settings. Study participants will be benefited from the coaching program and will improve their self-efficacy, diabetes self-care practice, and blood glucose level. Furthermore, the study will have a paramount advantage to establish a foundation for future definitive trial that can prove effectiveness of the program.
