Filter by:Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) covers a spectrum from simple reversible hepatic steatosis to inflammation and fibrosis termed steatohepatitis (NASH). The mechanisms behind why some subjects progress from NAFLD to NASH are not clear and the responsible mechanism for storage of excess amounts of liver fat in patients with NAFLD are poorly understood. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and abdominally obese subjects very often have accumulation of liver fat (NAFLD). T2D is also associated with abnormal lipid metabolism (dyslipidemia), including free fatty acids (FFA), hypertriglyceridemia and excessive postprandial hyperlipidemia which increases the risk of ischemic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and heart failure. In healthy, insulin sensitive subjects the postprandial increase in triglycerides (TG) is primarily caused by meal derived chylomicrons, whereas endogenously produced TG (VLDL-TG) and decreased peripheral TG clearance only becomes quantitatively important in insulin resistant subjects .Thus, postprandial lipidemia in T2D results from both chylomicronemia as well as a reduction in both insulin mediated suppression of VLDL-TG secretion and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) mediated peripheral clearance. A recent study demonstrated that the ability of insulin to suppress hepatic VLDL-TG after a fat-enriched meal and the duration of the postprandial hyperlipidemia was similar in patients with T2D compared with age- and BMI matched individuals without T2D, indicating that the degree of insulin mediated VLDL-TG secretion and hyperlipidemia primarily depends on insulin sensitivity and not the presence of T2D diabetes per se. In these studies, the investigators want to examine the effect of a fat enriched mixed-meal on hepatic VLDL-TG handling and adipose storage capacity in patients with T2D with and without NAFLD. Investigators will address these questions using carboxyl-14C triolein labeled VLDL-TG, magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy of liver, muscle and fat biopsies in combination with state-of-the art muscle and adipose tissue enzyme kinetics, gene- and protein expression. The overarching goals are to define abnormalities and differences between patients with T2D with and without NAFLD in terms of hepatic lipid metabolism.
Limited data exist about the use of insulin degludec and insulin glargine U300 in the hospitalized patients. A previous study compared the safety and efficacy of insulin degludec versus insulin glargine U100 for the management of hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes. However, there is no data comparing the efficacy and safety of insulin degludec versus insulin glargine U300 for the management of hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes. Accordingly, the proposed study will provide a clinically useful information on the efficacy (blood glucose control) and safety (hypoglycemia) of insulin degludec versus insulin glargine U300 for the management of hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes.

Current treatments for type 2 diabetes (e.g., lifestyle changes and clinical interventions such as medication), have been shown to be unsustainable due to low levels of physical activity and increasing clinical costs. Therefore, scientists have been looking for new treatments to address this issue. One such treatment that is being investigated is passive heating (e.g., hot baths, saunas, etc.). In this study the investigators want to ascertain what passive heating, if any, individuals with T2DM currently do, what their perceptions of passive heating would be if it were to become a treatment, what may make it easier or more difficult for them to engage in passive heating, and how this might impact other areas of their life such as physical activity.
This single-arm pilot study aims to investigate the feasibility of a handball-based intervention to people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, including monitoring aerobic intensities and movement strategies during the intervention, and monitoring recruitment, adherence, and adverse events. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the feasibility of a test battery including both physiological and patient-reported outcomes, and to investigate preliminary exercise effects.
The purpose of this study is to determine if incorporating videos on the importance of minimizing infant sugar-containing beverage (SCB) consumption into well-child visit protocols increases parents' SCB-related knowledge and their compliance with related early feeding recommendations. The study also aims to determine whether these videos increase the frequency and quality of the SCB-related reduction education and counseling provided to parents during well-child visits.
Background: Both exercise and metformin are used to control blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), while no previous studies have investigated the effect of resistance exercise combined with metformin versus aerobic exercise with metformin in T2DM patients. This study was conducted to compare the effects of resistance exercise combined with metformin versus aerobic exercise with metformin in T2DM patients.
Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is associated with the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dental caries. The current study attempts to explore whether an educational, science-based intervention is able to produce a measurable negative change in preferences for sugar-sweetened beverages, as well as initiate plans to reduce future SSB consumption in 12-year old children. In the first condition (SSB Intervention), participants will watch a video showing the decay of an egg in various SSBs (Coca-Cola, Sprite, Gatorade, and apple juice), followed by the evaporation of these beverages over a heat source, revealing their sugar content. In the second condition (Water Intervention), participants will watch a video showing an egg maintaining its shell in water, followed by the evaporation of water. In the third condition (Control), participants will watch a video of an egg maintaining its shell in rubbing alcohol, followed by the evaporation of rubbing alcohol. Before and after watching their assigned video, participants will complete survey questions to assess self-reported: SSB consumption intentions, attitudes toward SSBs, and health perceptions of SSBs. Therefore, the aims of this study are to (1) quantify changes in SSB consumption intentions, attitudes towards SSBs, and health perceptions of SSBs from pre-video to post-video, (2) establish the effectiveness of the SSB Intervention and Water Intervention over the control, (3) establish the effectiveness of the SSB Intervention over the Water Intervention, (4) determine the efficacy of incorporating scientific evidence in a public health intervention, and (5) make recommendations for the future application of the method employed in this intervention to future public health campaigns.
