The overall goals of this study are to examine the relationship between chronic inflammation and threat and reward sensitivity, and to determine the effects of acute inflammation on threat sensitivity, in individuals with and without moderate to severe PTSD symptoms. The investigators will first conduct an observational study to examine the relationship between chronic inflammation and neural and behavioral measures of threat sensitivity. Then, the investigators will conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, between-subjects study to examine the effects of acute inflammation on neural and behavioral measures of threat sensitivity.
After a traumatic event such as an accident or an assault, victims may experience intense stress symptoms that may evolve into "post-traumatic stress disorder" (PTSD). It is a frequent and serious pathology, which can be complicated by depression, addiction or suicide. Few means are available to prevent PTSD in people who have just undergone trauma. Prazosin is an antihypertensive drug that blocks α1 adrenaline receptors which could help to stop the vicious circle of stress and prevent the development of the disease. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of prazosin to prevent PTSD in patients who visit an emergency department after trauma.
The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy on PTSD symptoms in veterans with PTSD as compared with existing care. The investigators' hypothesis is: EAP Participants' will experience decreased PTSD symptoms following participation in a 6-week Equine Assisted Psychotherapy program.
This study will test the efficacy of the Freespira Breathing System in adults with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
To evaluate the safety, efficacy and tolerability of brexpiprazole (with placebo) as monotherapy or combination therapy with Zoloft (sertraline) in adults with PTSD.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in a population of individuals with PTSD and common related problems (depression, anxiety or sleep disorders, pain, psychosocial stressors, low social support, substance use disorder). Half of the participants will receive a cognitive behavioral therapy with specific modules for the treatment of related problems (CBT-E) and the other half of participants will receive therapy without specific modules (CBT-C). The main assumption is that participants treated in the CBT-E condition will present a lower level of symptom intensity of PTSD and a higher remission rate than those in the CBT-C condition during the post-treatment assessment. As a secondary objective, an analysis of the different parameters of effectiveness of the two forms of CBT (e.g., average number of sessions required to reach remission, treatment strategies used) will be performed.
Participants with Borderline pathology (≥ 3 DSM-IV-criteria) receiving an inpatient Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program completed a quality assurance questionnaire set assessing demographic information and pretreatment psychopathology during the days of their inpatient stay. Beyond that, changes of therapists were documented.
Most people will experience a psychologically traumatic event, such as a life-threatening accident, at some point in their life. In the initial days after such an event, it is common to be haunted by intrusive memories: image-based memories of the event that spring to mind unbidden. Intrusive memories can be distressing in their own right, but are also a hallmark symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sleep is important for many functions involved in how people perceive, respond to and remember events, including stressful/traumatic events. Studies with patients who have experienced traumatic events indicate that sleep disturbances in the first weeks post-trauma are associated with later PTSD symptoms. However, in a previous study with healthy volunteers exposed to experimental trauma (film footage), those who were sleep-deprived in the first night, compared to those who slept, had fewer intrusive memories in the following week. This raises the question of how sleep in the first night, but also the first week, after real-life trauma is related to subsequent intrusive memories and PTSD symptoms. The current study is an observational study of patients recruited from a hospital emergency department after a traumatic event. After completing brief baseline questionnaires in the emergency department, participants will be asked to fill in a daily diary of their sleep and intrusive memories over the following week. Post-traumatic stress symptoms, anxiety and depression will be assessed by post/online at one week and two months. Participants will be telephoned after two months to complete an interview to assess PTSD symptoms and an optional feedback interview. This clinical study will be the first to assess the relationship between sleep in the first night and week, and intrusive memories and mental wellbeing after real-life trauma. Findings may have implications for developing simple sleep-based preventive treatments after trauma in the future.
The goal of this study is to look at how a type of drug called cannabinoids are related to the processing of fear signals, the experience of emotions and fear, and the pattern of activity in the brain that is involved in these processes and how this relates to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is an anxiety disorder that occurs after experiencing a traumatic event(s) and is characterized by unwanted memories of the trauma(s) through flashbacks or nightmares, avoidance of situations that remind the person of the event, difficulty experiencing emotions, loss of interest in activities the person used to enjoy, and increased arousal, such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, anger and hypervigilance. The information gained from this study could lead to the development of new treatments for persons who suffer from anxiety or fear-based disorders.
