Filter by:Endometriosis, one of the most common diseases of women during their reproductive period., may present a chronic disabling disease with major impact on women's life. Therapeutic options are limited and recurrence of disease symptoms is frequent. The current study investigates the quality of life and several risk factors for the development of endometriosis as well as satisfaction with medical support in a minimum of 600 women with different stages of endometriosis and the same number of control women matched for age (± 3 years) and nationality. To evaluate specific features of endometriosis-associated pain a second group of 100 women with chronic abdominal/pelvic pain not related to endometriosis is investigated. Recruitment takes place in different university clinics, and districts hospitals in Switzerland, Germany. And Austria. Control women i.e. women without any evidence for endometriosis presenting for annual routine gynaecological controls are collected at the same places. A composition of different internationally validated questionnaires as well as specific questions on dealing with endometriosis is used to collect information on the quality of life and potential risk factors for endometriosis. Questions on sexuality and partnership are also distributed to women's partners. All diagnosis of endometriosis and classification of ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) disease stages are based on woman's medical charts.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality and disability, and by 2020, it is expected to be the third leading cause of mortality worldwide. COPD is a major public health concern and has considerable impact on health and quality of life. For this study an evidence based self-management program is developed, the purpose of the study is to see if this self-management program, in collaboration between specialized health services and municipality health services, improves patients with COPD health-promoting competence, coping and quality of life, and reduces health service costs.The study has a RCT design.
The quality of life and daily activities can be affected by muscleskeletal pain and one of the forms of assessment is through the SF-36 questionnaire. The investigators know that the working kinesitherapy is a way to improve the quality of life.
The Primary Goal is to conduct a 5-10 week randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the Fitbit Flex, a popular, affordable, wearable physical activity tracking device, and the Fitbit mHealth app. The target population will be childhood cancer survivors 14-18 years old recruited from Seattle Children's Hospital. For the intervention group, peer influences will be engaged via a private, social network (e.g. a Facebook group) customized for survivors. Measurements will be completed (1) at baseline, prior to randomization, and (2) during the final week of the intervention period (follow-up measure). This study will provide initial proof of concept and allow for further customization of the intervention for childhood cancer survivors in anticipation of a future, larger proposal to study physical activity and related outcomes over a multi-year period.
This study is a prospective, randomized, controlled multicenter clinical study. The aim of the study is to investigate whether the combination of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) with hemoperfusion (HP) could improve the clearance rate of middle and large molecule uremic toxins so as to improve the quality of life of MHD patients and reduce their mortality rate.
BACKGROUND: Motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease may impair one's independence and ability to perform daily activities consequently decreases quality of life. Hippotherapy has been shown as an effective treatment to improve function in daily activities and quality of life in other neurological populations, thus a study was conducted to assess the effects of hippotherapy in people with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Nine volunteers formed the treatment group which participated in a ten-week hippotherapy program, and nine individuals formed the control group (attended a ten-week series of lessons on Parkinson's disease). Outcome measures included 30-second chair stand (as a measure of strength-endurance), gait velocity (during 10m walk test) and health-related quality of life.

A diminution of quality of life is often reported by patients after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. A part of this diminution could be explain by postoperative left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. Exenatide (Byetta®) is an incretin mimetic, characterized by an anti-hyperglycemic effect that depends on the blood glucose level. Recent data have suggested that exenatide could improve LV function by an inotropic effect in patients suffering from cardiogenic shock or from congestive heart failure. Moreover, patients suffering from congestive heart failure reported a better quality of life when they were treated with exenatide compared to placebo. The investigators hypothesize that perioperative exenatide infusion could improve postoperative quality of life in CABG surgery patients.
