Quality of Life in Cardiac Pediatric Patients Attending Assuit Univeristy Hospital

Start date: October 1, 2020
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Quality of life(QOL) is defined as the individual perception related with their state in life in terms of the cultural structure and system of values in which they live. Their objectives, expectations, standards and concerns, whereas health related quality of life is defined as the patient subjective perception of the impact of their disease or its treatment.(1) Cardiac disease is the most common congenital defect in children, with an incidence of eight in every 1000 live births. Multiple factors have improved and prolonged the lives of children and adolescents with congenital heart disease over the last few decades(2)

Using Meditation for Oncology Anxiety

Start date: January 31, 2024
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The current study is a prospective, interventional, randomized, treatment-controlled study, evaluating the use of Meditation with a Mantra (MM) to decrease anxiety levels and improve Quality of Life (QOL) in prostate cancer patients receiving radiation treatment. The study will be conducted across 6 radiation treatment sessions in men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer, Stage 1 to 3A, and men with recurrent prostate cancer. Patients will receive six radiation sessions with usual care with or without the addition of MM. MM Group patients will be given a log at the beginning of the study to record how long they are meditating and if they found meditation beneficial. The General Anxiety Disorder-7 scale (GAD-7) is a validated tool and will be used to assess anxiety in all participants. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Prostate, Version 4 (FACT-P) is a validated measure of QOL in prostate cancer patients and will be used to assess QOL in all participants. A one month follow up phone call will determine if the patients are continuing to use the MM and if they found the practice of MM useful not only in their radiation treatment sessions but in their everyday lives.

Feasibility of Frailty Assessment and Implementation of Interventions in Women Over 70 With Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

FAIR-O
Start date: June 1, 2020
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Ovarian cancer is frequently diagnosed in older women, with over half of all new diagnoses being in women over 65 years. Current treatment options are based on the results of clinical trials that often do not include older, less fit patients in whom treatments may be less well tolerated. Further, in older patients the impact of complex medical and social issues is not known. The UK lags behind Europe and the United States in the development of research programs dedicated to improving outcomes for older patients. More research focus is urgently required to improve the assessment and management of older women with ovarian cancer to improve survival outcomes, quality of life and functional independence. Current treatment decisions are made predominantly on age and fitness. However, it has been shown that undertaking a holistic, geriatric assessment of older patients can highlight important issues that would not necessarily be identified in a routine oncology appointment. In this study, we propose to ask oncology teams to undertake a geriatric assessment and specifically address issues that may arise as a result of this. The assessment comprises 8 simple non-invasive assessments that can be performed in the out-patient setting. This approach could result in an important change in clinical practice leading to more holistic assessment of older cancer patients and better address their specific needs and manage their cancer treatment. The long-term goal is to show that pro-actively managing potential issues at the beginning of treatment allows patients to tolerate treatment and maintain their functional independence, leading to improved quality of life.

Vaginal Prolapse Surgery Accompanied by Mid Urethral Sling Versus no Sling for Reduction of Postoperative Incontinence

Start date: January 2020
Phase: Phase 2/Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

Prevalence of pelvic organ prolapsed is high in Nepal. After prolapse surgery many patients are affected with incontinence. Incontinence has physical, social and mental effect to the individual. This study is designed to know the role for mid urethral sling during vaginal prolapse surgery to decrease the rate of incontinence after the surgery.

A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Study of the Effect of Laparoscopic Preservation of the Pylorus

Start date: January 1, 2020
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

For the patients with early gastric cancer (T1), preoperative evaluation (gastroscope, ultrasound gastroscope and abdominal enhanced CT) showed that the tumor was located in the body of the stomach, and the margin was enough to retain the pylorus and non lymph node metastasis (N0). Lappg (D1 + lymph node dissection) and traditional laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (BII type anastomosis, D1 + lymph node dissection) were included A control study was conducted to evaluate the influence of two surgical methods on the long-term quality of life of patients after operation

Comparing the Quality of Life After Nylon Darn Repair of Inguinal Hernia to Polypropylene Mesh Repair

Start date: November 1, 2019
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Inguinal hernia repair may be done by the nylon darn, polypropylene mesh and other methods. Polypropylene mesh is established in the literature as the standard of care for inguinal hernia repair. It is however expensive and not readily available in our community hospitals. Nylon darn repair is widely used in our hospitals. We think that the quality of life following nylon darn repair and polypropylene mesh repair is similar. In order to find out, we are recruiting 79 patients to undergo nylon darn repair for their inguinal hernia and another 79 patients to undergo polypropylene mesh repair for their inguinal hernia repair. We are doing research to compare the quality of life after nylon darn repair of inguinal hernia to polypropylene mesh repair in patients aged 18 years to 80 years who come to St. Luke Hospital for their first-ever inguinal hernia repair.

Effects of Aromatherapy on the Headache and Service Quality Among Nurses Working in Critical Care Nurses Units.

Start date: March 15, 2019
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Background: Our pilot study showed that the prevalence of headaches is 43.5% among nurses working in critical care units in a medical center in Taiwan. In the pilot study, 70% nurses with headache are willing to participate in this intervention study with essential oil. The effect of aromatherapy (essential oils through smelling) is convenient for nurses but still lacks strong evidences regarding relieving headaches. Purpose: Thus, in this intervention study, we will examine whether the necklace with essential oil can (1) improve the pain intensity and frequency of headache; (2) reduce the score of headache disability inventory (HDI) and (3) improve the nurses' quality of life and care quality. Method: Cluster randomized control trial from 16 critical care units at a medical center in Taiwan. The International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD, 3rd edition) was used to identify the headache type as "migraine" or "tension-type headache." We will recruit the nurses from 16 critical care units who has migraine or tension-type headache and cluster random assign (according to the ward unit) to group A and B. The intervention of necklace with essential oil will use to compare with the other group. According to power analysis and possible attrition rate, 103 nurses will be recruited. All participants will be asked to complete self-administrated questionnaires, including headache information questions, headache disability inventory (HDI), Migraine Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire version 2.1 (MSQv2.1), Copenhagen burnout inventory (CBI), Service Quality Scale (SERVQUAL), Intention to leave inventory (ITL), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), Tasks Undone-13 (TU-13). The quantitative data will analyze by percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square test, and generalized estimating equation (GEE). Expected outcomes and future implications: The aromatherapy (necklace with essential oil) can reduce the pain intensity, frequency, disability of headaches, as well as enhance nurses' quality of life and care quality.
