Filter by:The aim of the current study is to demonstrate that a commercial weight management diet (i.e. low energy density) influences satiation, hunger and satiety and leads to lower energy intake during ad-libitum meals and over a full day. We further seek to demonstrate the sustainability of this effect following 12- week weight loss on the weight management program. - We hypothesise that formulated (low energy) meals will lead to decreased hunger, greater fullness and reduced desire to eat compared to standard meals. - We hypothesise that the commercial weight management program will lead to greater weight loss compared to control program. - We hypothesise that formulated meals (high consumer acceptance) will improve hedonic control over eating (lower wanting for high fat food) - We hypothesise that the commercial weight management program will improve hedonic control over eating (reduced experience food cravings)
The purpose of this research study is to learn more about how our body produces sugar, breaks down fat for fuel, and makes insulin (the major hormone that controls the production of blood sugar and fat breakdown) during a 24-hour day and how body fat and muscle are involved in these processes.
Potato is one of the world's most popular foods and is widely accepted as a staple food. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of consuming instant mashed potatoes with and without fat on glycemic response, subjective appetite and food intake. It is hypothesized that mashed potato with added fat (as it is usually consumed) will result in lower glycaemic response and subjective appetite, and reduced subsequent food intake.
The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is highly effective in promoting weight loss in overweight and obese individuals (e.g., 7% average loss of body weight), and thereby reducing the risk of developing weight-related health consequences. One-on-one DPP sessions, however, are costly and the group-delivered DPP version, the Group Lifestyle Balance program (GLB), is less effective (4% average loss of body weight). The aim of this two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial is to increase the effectiveness of the GLB by integrating habit formation techniques, namely if-then plans and their mental practice, into the program. The study will provide evidence-based data on the effectiveness of an enhanced GLB intervention in promoting weight loss and in reducing weight-related risk factors for chronic health problems.
Despite continued research on effective interventions, obesity remains a major public health issue in the United States. Current treatments, including behavioral weight management programs, weight loss surgery, and pharmacotherapy, tend to be high in cost and have limited reach, reducing the ability of these treatments to address the population-wide scope of the obesity epidemic. Recent advances in technology that improve the ease of self-monitoring and provide targeted feedback offer promise to help larger groups of individuals to lose weight. Despite the commercial popularity of these products, however, little research has been conducted to evaluate their impact on excess body weight or to determine how they should ideally be implemented. Two key questions need to be addressed. First, is use of self-monitoring technology sufficient to produce weight loss, or must this technology be combined with interventionist contact? Second, how cost-effective is a technology-based intervention, with and without interventionist contact? The current study is small prospective, randomized pilot study comparing a self-guided self-monitoring condition (SC) to a technology only condition (TECH) and a technology plus interventionist support condition (TECH+INT). All participants will all be given basic weight management information knowledge and randomized to one of three conditions. Participants in the self-guided self-monitoring condition (SC) will receive traditional paper self-monitoring logs, a standard body weight scale, and a pedometer and calorie book; participants in the technology-based condition (TECH) will receive an electronic activity monitor and WiFi-enabled body weight scale, and will track caloric intake via an associated website; and participants in the interventionist contact condition (TECH+INT) will receive the same technology as in the TECH condition, combined with weekly interventionist contact delivered via telephone. We will compare the impact of each condition on weight loss and investigate preliminary cost-effectiveness.
In Denmark and the western world, there is an increasing prevalence of obesity probably due to a combination of inadequate daily physical activity and a high energy intake. One approach to achieve weight loss and change life style is to participate in an intensive supervised prolonged life style modification course. The immediate effect is often positive, but over time the overall effect is limited as the majority will not maintain weight loss and a changed life style. The purpose of this study is therefore to characterize the physiological factors that determine/influence the capacity to maintain weight loss and a healthy lifestyle after a prolonged lifestyle intervention. We have the following research questions: 1. Are there physiological traits and characteristics that mediate better adherence to lifestyle changes and weight loss? 2. Does the adaptation in muscle oxidative capacity after lifestyle intervention predict success in maintaining weight loss and lifestyle changes 3, 12 and 39 months after intervention? 3. How does gender and age influence the capacity to maintain the lifestyle induced adaptation in muscle and adipose tissue and maintaining weight loss? The study design is a longitudinal intervention and will be based on a lifestyle intervention, as it is practiced in a real life setting at Ubberup folk high school.

The investigators will recruit former participants of this lifestyle style intervention. 50 % who maintained a weight loss and a healthy life style and 50 % who did not.
Increasing physical activity in older adults has important implications for treating obesity related metabolic conditions, however the interaction of aging- and obesity-related declines in physical function may make adding structured exercise particularly challenging for this group. Given these challenges, an alternative prescription to traditional structured exercise, may be short bouts of intermittent walking scattered throughout the day - this may be an effective strategy to increase physical activity, reduce sedentary behavior, and improve glycemic control in overweight/obese older adults. The purpose of this project is to determine how interrupting sedentary time with short bouts of moderate intensity walking affects important metabolic outcomes in older, overweight adults. It would also be of interest to compare the effects of short, frequent interruptions in sedentary behavior to a traditional exercise prescription (continuous 30 min walking bout) on metabolic outcomes (e.g., glycemic control, insulin sensitivity, and 24 h fat oxidation). Thus, the overall aims of the proposed research are to 1) Determine the effect of performing short bouts of moderate-intensity intermittent walking (IW) on glucose and insulin metabolism compared to uninterrupted sitting (US) in older overweight and obese adults. 2) To compare the effects of interrupting sedentary time (IW) vs. a traditional exercise prescription (continuous 30 m walk (CW)) on metabolism. The investigators hypothesize that interrupting sedentary time with intermittent walking will improve glucose and insulin metabolism compared to uninterrupted sitting and it will be as effective at improving metabolism as a single continuous 30 min walk.
Background: Lipid lowering response to weight loss in subjects with genetic hyperlipidemias and overweight or obesity and its effect on cholesterol metabolism has not been studied. Objective: To explore the effects of weight loss on lipid values and cholesterol metabolism, by measuring circulating non-cholesterol sterols, in overweight or obese subjects with genetic hypercholesterolemias. Design: The investigators conducted a 6-months weight loss intervention in subjects with the diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) or familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL), body mass index >25 kg/m2, steady weight (±3 kg in the last 3 months) and absence of lipid lowering drugs in the previous 5 weeks. They were advised to follow a hypocaloric diet with a deficit of 600 kcal (30% fat, 15% protein, and 55% carbohydrates) per day as calculated from the person's resting energy expenditure and activity level. Anthropometric data, biochemical analysis including lipids, apolipoproteins and non-cholesterol sterols were evaluated at baseline, 3 months and 6 months.
This study is a four armed randomized controlled trial (RCT) where the main purpose is to investigate the effect on muscle strength and changes in body composition in overweight (BMI ˂ 25) "not regularly exercising" women aged 18-65, after 12 weeks of Body Pump (BP), compared with an inactive control group. The study will also measure energy expenditure during one session of BP. At the same time, the project will investigate the effect on muscle strength and changes in body composition in group training with, respective without, a personal trainer (PT). H0: There`s no different between the groups after 12 weeks of Body Pump and traditional strength training with and without a personal trainer on muscle strength and muscle mass in adult overweight females. H1: There is a different between the groups after 12 weeks of Body Pump and traditional strength training with and without a personal trainer on muscle strength and muscle mass in adult overweight females.
