Arthroscopic Debridement vs Arthroscopic Hemi-Trapeziectomy on Patients With Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint Osteoarthritis

Patients with thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis usually suffer from pain, joint enlargement, inflammation, deformity and loss of function. Conservative treatments usually are the first-line interventions, unfortunately some of the patients do not response to such treatments and surgical treatment will then be considered. Compare to other traditional surgical techniques, arthroscopic techniques has resulted in the potential to treat osteoarthritis in a minimally invasive approach, avoiding the need for a larger incision. Other advantages of arthroscopy include less scarring and joint contracture, less risk of neurovascular injury, improved appearance, limited morbidity and quicker recovery. Although arthroscopic methods have been proved to be effective, there is lack of high-level evidence based studies to conclude one operation is superior to another. Hence, this study is designed to investigate outcomes of the two arthroscopic surgical methods (arthroscopic debridement vs arthroscopic hemi-trapeziectomy with Mini TightRope). The result of this study is expected to provide significant evidence based clinical data for surgeons worldwide on treating the thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis.

Investigation of Oxidative Markers and Antioxidant Defense in Female Patients With Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis has a multifactorial etiology: aging, genetic, sex, weight, alimentation, injuries, infections etc. The objective of the study is to investigate the eating behaviour of the patients included in the study by using a semiquantitative questionnaire (frequency and quantity) by estimating the foods that are known to be protective for osteoarthritis (vegetables, fruits, cereals) as the ones that are considered risk factors (meat origin, refined fats). Also, the oxidative-antioxidative balance will be evaluated by determining markers: oxidated glutathione/reducted glutathione, catalase enzyme, superoxide dismutase, glutathion peroxidase and malonyldialdehyde.

Determination of the Effectiveness of Certain Physical Methods in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease that involves the entire joint, causing cartilage damage, bone remodeling, osteophyte formation and loss of normal joint function. Knee OA is one of the leading causes of disability in the world and thus represents a major public health problem. Knee OA treatment can be operative and non-operative. Non-operative treatment includes pharmacological treatment, changing life style and physical therapy. The goal of physical therapy in knee OA is to reduce pain and improve knee function through therapeutic exercise, especially by strengthening the quadriceps muscle. In addition to therapeutic exercise, muscle electrical stimulation is often used, and in the literature there is evidence of biofeedback therapy efficacy. Goal of the study is to investigate whether there is a difference in pain reduction, increase in quadriceps muscle strength, and improvement in knee function in patients who had only kinesitherapy, from those who underwent kinesitherapy and biofeedback, and in patients who received electrical stimulation of quadriceps muscle with kinesitherapy. 93 patients with knee OA according to ACR criteria and Kellgren and Lawrence radiological classification grades 1 and 2 will be included in study. Subjects will complete: Visually Analogous Pain Scale (VAS), Western Ontario Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), 36 Item Short Form Health Survey (SF 36), International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) osteoarthritis core set, and quadriceps muscle strength will be measured by EMG biofeedback device.
