Filter by:This study describes the caseload treated by the extended scope physiotherapists(ESP) working in the emergency department at Slagelse Hospital. Patients treated by the ESP during a 3 month period will be included in this study. Furthermore we aim to assess if ESPs treating patients with minor musculoskeletal injuries in the ED can predict the short-term prognosis of recovery. The prediction is made at hospital discharge using a (-7/+7) numerical rating scale (-7=poor prognosis; 7=best prognosis).
Emergency departments (ED) in several countries integrated physiotherapists in order to reduce wait times for patients with musculoskeletal disorders (MSKD). These initiatives have indeed reduced wait times, length of stay, time waited before seeing a professional and the prescription of unnecessary consultations and diagnostic tests. In Canada, such initiatives are marginal and their effects have not been studied. The objectives of the project are to evaluate the effects of physiotherapy management of patients with MSKD in ED compared to usual practice on clinical course of patients, use of services and resources, and waiting time and length of stay in ED. The hypothesis is that patients presenting with a MSKD to the ED with direct access to a physiotherapist will have better clinical outcomes and that use of services, waiting time, and length of stay are going to be inferior to those of the EP group.

This study responds to the need to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of a telerehabilitation home monitoring program for users receiving a preliminary assessment while waiting for rehabilitation services at the outpatient physiotherapy clinic. The specific objectives are as followed: 1) Evaluate the implementation of telerehabilitation monitoring (TELE-FOLLOW-UP); 2) Evaluate the effectiveness of TELE-FOLLOW-UP compared to the usual phone call; 3) Evaluate user satisfaction for these two modes of service delivery; 4) Identify facilitators and barriers to the implementation of TELE-FOLLOW-UP. In order to meet the objectives of the study, mixed methods will be used. A randomized clinical trial will be used to achieve objectives 1, 2 and 3. The investigators plan to recruit 142 patients. Two groups will be formed: 1) TELE-FOLLOW-UP group: users who will receive follow-up by telerehabilitation; 2) PHONE-FOLLOW-UP group: those who will receive follow-up by a phone call.

This study evaluates whether ketamine, given as part of an anesthetic, improves depression symptoms in depressed patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Half of participants will receive a ketamine infusion during surgery, while the other half will receive a placebo (normal saline) during surgery.
Youth with physical disabilities face greater restrictions to participation in community-based activities than their typically developing peers, which can lead to poor health outcomes. Emerging treatment approaches aimed at improving activity and participation have shifted from focusing only on impaired body functions towards the performance of functionally meaningful activities within the youth's natural environment. It is unclear, however, whether targeting intervention at the activity/participation level can, at the same time, result in improvement of personal functional skills (e.g., reaching) and body functions (e.g., range of motion) -components also important to address and maintain within the rehabilitation process. Together with key community-based stakeholders including youth/parents, clinicians, and policy-makers, the investigators plan, therefore, to examine whether engaging in a 6-week community based activity (e.g., joining a sledge hockey team, boccia) can lead to a significant improvement in three key body functions: motor, cognitive and affective functions. Eight participants with physical disabilities will take part in the study and engage in an activity program of their own choice. Changes in their body functions (e.g., movement-related functions, attention, behavior, mood) will be measured multiple times before, during and after the engagement in an individualized activity/program. Findings of this pilot study analyzed with input from key stakeholders can advance the investigators understanding about methods for testing complex and unique individual-based interventions. This can guide clinicians, families and policy-makers to select effective approaches that not only promote participation but can also facilitate additional (motor and mental) benefits from one single intervention. Such findings may also reduce the burdens on the healthcare system as well as on the youth and families.
