Iron and Muscular Damage: FEmale Metabolism and Menstrual Cycle During Exercise

This project is an observational controlled randomized counterbalance study. One hundred and three physically active and healthy women were selected to participate in the IronFEMME Study, of which 57 were eumenorrheic, 30 were oral contraceptive users (OCP) and 16 were postmenopausal women. The project consisted on two sections carrying out at the same time: Iron metabolism (Study I) and Muscle damage (Study II). For the study I, the exercise protocol consisted on an interval running test (8 bouts of 3 min at 85% of the maximal aerobic speed), whereas the study II protocol was based on an eccentric-based resistance exercise protocol (10 sets of 10 repetitions of plate-loaded barbell parallel back squats at 60% of their 1RM with 2 min of rest between sets). In both studies, eumenorrheic participants were evaluated at three specific moments of the menstrual cycle: Early-follicular phase, late-follicular phase and mid-luteal phase; OCP performed the trial at two moments: Withdrawal phase and active pill phase. Lastly, postmenopausal women were tested only once, since their hormonal status does not fluctuate. The three-step method was used to verify the menstrual cycle phase: calendar counting, blood analyses confirmation and urine-based ovulation kits. Blood samples were obtained to measure sexual hormones (e.g., 17β-Estradiol, Progesterone), iron metabolism parameters (e.g., Hepcidin, Iron, Ferritin, Transferrin) and muscle damage related markers (e.g., Creatine Kinase, Myoglobin, Lactate Dehydrogenase).

The Effect of Adding Smartphone-based Platform to the Bariatric Surgery Preparation Process

A randomized controlled trial on 40 bariatric surgery candidates who will be randomized into two arms (app vs. control). All the participants will receive the standard care of 3-6 preparation to bariatric surgery meetings with a dietitian, and only those participants who will assigned to the experimental group will get access to our study's smartphone app site during this period. Evaluations will be performed at baseline, at the end of the intervention phase (after 3-6 meetings as needed) and at 1 and 2 years post-surgery (data will be collected at 1 and 2 years post-surgery by phone calls). Data which will be collected for this study include:demographics and medical data, anthropometrics including body composition analysis, handgrip Strength, physical activity, hydration state, bariatric surgery knowledge questionnaire, quality of life by visual analogue scale, compliance to dietary and lifestyle BS recommendations, readiness for surgery, the subject's experience regarding the smartphone app, surgical data and adherence to post-surgical follow-up by the bariatric team.

Develop and Implement Methods for Diagnostic and Treatment of Hormonal Disorders in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

Methods of diagnostic and treatment of hormonal disorders in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) will be developed and implemented in real clinical practice. As a result of the project, new scientific data will be obtained on the relationship of hyperprolactinemia and impaired functioning of the pituitary-gonadal axis, changes in functioning of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system will be revealed, and the characteristics of the thyroid and parathyroid status in patients with CKD will be determined, including receiving renal replacement therapy (RRT) and after kidney transplantation, which will improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders in the early stages of the disease, reduce the direct financial costs of the diagnostic and treatment process primarily due to the optimization of hormonal studies and treatment of the revealed disorders, as well as will prevent the progression of CKD and the severity of the condition of this category of patients due to the development of hormonal dysfunctions.

Investigators will test the long-term health effects of eating a dairy-based protein-rich breakfast and/or performing regular physical training for 12 weeks in 100 previous 'breakfast skipping' young overweight women (2 x 2 factorial design).
