Filter by:In psychotic disorders, negative symptoms and cognitive impairment are difficult to treat with antipsychotics, which are mostly effective for positive symptoms. However, it is important that negative symptoms and cognitive impairment are treated as well, as they both play a large part in the acute episode and long-term course of schizophrenia outcome. Previous studies have used D-serine as add-on treatment in patients with psy-chotic disorders and high-risk patients, with positive results. So far, no study has investigated the effects in a sample of recent-onset psychosis patients. Therefore, this study will include 30 patients (18-50 years old) with recent-onset psychosis. In addition to their regular treatment, patients will receive either D-serine (2 g/d) or placebo for 6 weeks. D-serine is an amino-acid naturally occurring in the brain which is prescription-free available as nutritional supplement. The primary outcome measure is total score on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Secondary measure-ments include PANSS subscales, neurocognitive tests, (f)MRI, and EEG
People who have a severe mental illness can have poorer physical health and higher mortality rates than the general population. Their medications combined with low levels of physical activity and increased sedentary behaviour can general population and may help people with severe mental illness to be more active. A previous feasibility study has been conducted in the UK in a large city with positive findings. The current study will be conducted in rural settings in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. The intervention will last 13 weeks. People with Severe Mental Illness will be randomly assigned into one of two groups. Both groups will get information on the benefits of physical activity. In addition, one group will be shown how to use a step counter to measure their steps, be invited to a weekly group walk, and meet their coach every 2 weeks contribute to this. Walking is a good way to increase physical activity in the to see how they are getting on and to support them. The research team are interested in finding out how willing clinicians are to recruit people into the study, how willing people are to take part, do people then stick with the programme, and if not the reasons for people dropping out. Qualitative findings will explore whether participants feel they benefited from and enjoyed the programme. Findings will be used to investigate the feasibility to conduct a larger trial like this in the future.
This study aims to test the feasibility of implementing an Icelandic cognitive-behavioral program designed to prevent depression, called "Thoughts and Health" in a Swedish school setting. The investigators will also evaluate whether implementation of the program has an impact on the participating students, regarding both their mental health and their success in finishing junior high school with passing grades.
Connection to Environment with Cognitive Therapy (CONNECT): A Single-Case Experimental Design Exploring Dissociative Experiences and Voices Emerging empirical evidence has suggested that dissociation is a robust determinant of voice-hearing in psychosis, and that dissociation mediates the link between trauma and voices. Despite the emerging evidence-base, targeted therapeutic interventions focusing on dissociation remain largely untested. The aim of the current study is to investigate whether targeting dissociation leads to improvements in distressing voices in people with a history of trauma. This will be done by delivering an eight session intervention called 'CONNECT' to six individuals within the Glasgow Psychological Trauma Service (GPTS) who hear voices, have experienced trauma and are dissociating. The intervention will focus on learning strategies to manage dissociation. It is hypothesised that reduced levels of dissociation will be associated with reduction in the frequency and distress associated with hearing voices. This study will use a randomized multiple baseline single-case experimental design, meaning that participants will be randomly allocated to a baseline of two, three or four weeks and then will begin eight weeks of Connection to Environment Cognitive Therapy (CONNECT). As well as daily measures during baseline and intervention phases, there will be four assessment points (baseline, pre-intervention, post-intervention and follow-up). The study will take approximately three months plus follow-up one month after therapy ends. Individual levels of dissociation and voices will be compared during baseline and intervention periods using visual analysis and Tau-U. This study will contribute to the evidence-based for dissociation interventions targeting distressing voices among this population. It serves to investigate the proposed mechanism in a clinical population using a therapeutic intervention. It will therefore inform clinicians of the effectiveness and feasibility of using such strategies in clinical practice and may have good generalizability to practice.
Several instruments have been developed by clinicians and academics specialized in mental health and psychiatry to assess clinical recovery in terms of symptom reduction. Based on their life narratives, measurement tools have also been developed and validated through participatory research programs by persons living with mental health problems or illnesses to assess a more personal experience of recovery as a way of leaving a meaningful and satisfying life despite and beyond ongoing disorders and symptoms of mental illness. Other instruments have also been developed to assess the degree to which mental health and psychiatric institutions are recovery-oriented. The overall aim of this project is to explore correlations between clinical recovery, personal recovery and this latter organizational recovery.
Chronic pain has a highly negative impact on Veterans, especially those with serious mental illness (SMI). Chronic pain leads to poorer mental health and physical functioning, and represents a critical obstacle to rehabilitation and recovery. Despite known high prevalence rates of chronic pain in SMI populations, there is little research to: a) evaluate nonpharmacological pain management strategies in this population, and b) examine directional relations between chronic pain and SMI symptoms. This study aims to address research and clinical gaps by: a) testing the feasibility and acceptability of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) - a VA evidence-based psychotherapy for chronic pain - in Veterans with SMI, and b) better assessing the complex relation between chronic pain and psychiatric symptoms and their impact on functioning. Results from this study will inform us as to whether CBT-CP is feasible to implement, acceptable to Veterans with SMI, and worth examining in its standard or in an optimized form in a larger clinical trial.
This study aims to know the efficacy of a biodanza program in adults diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and it is a randomized controlled trial where the control group, which maintains its usual treatment, will form a waiting list to perform any of the treatments outside the follow-up period. There will also be a group that will carry out intervention with biodanza. For the selection of the sample, there will be the participation of different Alzheimer associations and geriatric centers in the province of Almeria. The inclusion criteria will be between 60 and 75 years old, with a primary diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, and who have never participated in any biodanza session or have knowledge about it. Those whose diagnosis is different from Alzheimer's disease or who suffers from a physical or psychological illness that prevents the execution of the sessions and all who do not participate in at least 75% (9 sessions) of the sessions will be excluded from the study. The biodanza program will consist of 12 sessions, one per week, during three months. The control group will continue with its usual treatment and activities, without suffering any alteration. A measurement of the groups (control group and biodanza group) will be carried out before the start and after the end of the sessions. The questionnaires and scales administered to the participants include demographical and clinical variables, physical state variables, cognitive variables, and emotional and behavioral variables. Finally, statistical analyzes will be performed using SPSS version 23. In the case of quantitative variables, they will be expressed as mean and standard deviation and, when the variables are of qualitative type, they will be represented by frequency and percentages.
The Parenting Young Children Check-up (PYCC) is a 3-part system for parents of children with Disruptive Behavior Problems (DBPs). First, at a pediatric visit, parents complete a screener for DBPs and, if reported, go through a tablet-based program to receive feedback and learn about the PYCC. Next, parents receive text messages to connect them to further parent training content. Third, parent training content is delivered via a web-based resource, which includes videos to teach parenting skills. In this proof-of-concept trial, the investigators will examine the acceptability of the tablet-based program and motivation of parents to engage in the PYCC and use the web-based resource. At a pediatric visit, parents will be told about the research opportunity by a staff member before, during, or after their visit. There will be a flier for parents, which will be available for receptionists to include with in-take paperwork. If parents express openness to participating, a research assistant will meet with them, go over the consent form, and let them complete the screener. Parents will complete a demographics questionnaire and the DBP screener. If parents report elevated DBPs, then they will be eligible to further participate. If they are eligible and choose to participate, the research assistant will have them go through the tablet-based program. Next, they will complete a brief questionnaire asking for input on the PYCC. Each of these components will be completed in the Computerized Intervention Authoring System (CIAS). The brief questionnaire is intended to evaluate perceptions of 1) ease of use, 2) usefulness of the information, 3) likability, and 4) intentions to use the PYCC web-based resource. Items will be rated on a 0 (strongly disagree) to 4 (strongly agree) scale. Parents will also verbally answer 6 open-ended interview questions about the program and suggest improvements. Answers will be audio-recorded and transcribed. All participants (whether only completing the screening or both parts of the study) will receive a resource list as well as a list of URLs to access videos on the video-based content on PYCC website. An ID number will need to be entered to use the website and the investigators will track website use. This data collection is not hypothesis driven. Rather, the intent is to gather mixed methods feedback from parents to shape the PYCC program.
This study aims to reduce racial disparities in child mental health care by examining the impact of a child behavioral health navigator (cbhNs) intervention in which cbhNs (n=15) will be trained to deliver an evidence-based family engagement, psychoeducation and support intervention to 390 early adolescent youth (10 to 14 years) and their families of African descent living in geographically defined St. Louis north city and county neighborhoods.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the group-based intervention "Starting the Conversation" as a webinar in Germany. Feasibility and efficacy of the program will be tested in a pilot randomized-controlled trial (RCT).
