Filter by:This study is designed to investigate the associations among marijuana's discriminative stimulus, reinforcing, subjective (e.g. craving) and physiological effects, and to assess the relative ability of oral THC to block these effects.
Heavy marijuana users report experiencing trouble sleeping when they try to quit, but this has not been carefully studied. This research is being done to learn more about sleep function in heavy marijuana users, and to determine whether a medication approved for treating insomnia can help restore normal sleep function during brief periods of abstinence.
A subset of heavy marijuana users have trouble quitting marijuana use and the number of those seeking treatment for problems related to marijuana is increasing. The purpose of this research study is to investigate whether dronabinol can reduce withdrawal effects associated with stopping marijuana use, if dronabinol can reduce the rewarding effects of smoked marijuana, and whether there are any cognitive performance deficits associated with dronabinol doses that produce such effects.
Cannabis use among Spanish adolescents has been increasing in the last decade. It has been related to poor school achievement, delinquency, substance use and psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, psychoactive substance use in adolescents presenting psychiatric disorders can result in the development of substance use disorders or the worsening of psychopathology. Thus, there's an urge to develop efficient interventions in the treatment of these disorders. Therapeutic approaches based on cognitive-behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing have demonstrated a limited efficacy in this population. Programs based on contingency management have been reported to be useful both in adult and adolescents, too. But it still remains unclear whether a combination of these therapeutic approaches is feasible and brings a better cost-benefit relation. The investigators' project aims to evaluate the added benefits of supplementing a standard intervention on cannabis use, based on combined approach that includes motivational and cognitive-behavioural elements, with a contingency management program. Therefore, pre and post-treatment evaluation will be carried forward in a sample of 30 adolescents (aged 12-18) that initiate treatment for cannabis use related disorder at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department of the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona. Participants will be randomly assigned to a standard treatment group or an experimental group in which standard treatment will be supplemented with a contingency management protocol. As a secondary objective, a prospective assessment of neuropsychological performance related to cannabis use or abstinence will be carried forward.
Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug, yet few clinical trials have evaluated pharmacotherapy treatments for marijuana dependence. This study will evaluate the efficacy of buspirone for reducing marijuana use in marijuana-dependent adults. A contingency management (CM) intervention and motivational enhancement therapy (MET) will be incorporated to encourage study engagement and retention. It is hypothesized that buspirone combined with MET and CM will reduce the percent of marijuana-positive urine drug screen results in marijuana-dependent individuals as compared to a placebo treatment combined with MET and CM.
Marijuana use is a major problem among veterans and non-veterans. A patient's use of marijuana while engaged in psychotherapy treatment may affect their memory and, therefore, limit their ability to benefit from treatment. This study is designed to test a new pharmacotherapy, modafinil, which has the potential to improve memory functioning in marijuana using individuals. We hypothesize that modafinil treatment will decrease ratings of drug liking and improve cognitive measures, especially episodic memory.
In this study the investigators will explore the relationship between physical activity and cannabis use. The investigators will compare regional brain activation detected by imaging technique(fRMI) before and after exercise in cannabis users and compare results with results from controls. The investigators hypothesize that the regional brain activation in response to visual cues (pictures related to cannabis use and food) will be different in cannabis users than in controls and that exercise will significantly alter brain responses to the cues.
Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness with a lifetime morbidity risk close to 1 %, involving both genetic and environmental risk factors. Prospective studies have shown that heavy use of cannabis in adolescence moderately increases the risk of developing schizophrenia. Many data have also suggested that the co-occurrence of cannabis abuse in patients with schizophrenia has a deleterious impact on the clinical outcome of schizophrenia. Cannabis abuse by schizophrenic patients is a significant public health problem for which there is no empirically validated treatment. We are presently studying the efficiency of motivational therapy on cannabis consumption in patients with schizophrenia.
Intention of the study is to examine, if the symptomatology of dual diagnosis patients is less severe after a special indication training for reduction of cannabis consumption in comparison to unspecified trainings. Point of interest is psychopathology and consumerism.
The objective of this study is to investigate the interaction between marijuana and quetiapine, with the goal of using this information to improve marijuana treatment outcome. It is hypothesized that quetiapine will decrease marijuana withdrawal and relapse. Primary outcome measures will be 1. marijuana's direct effects 2. marijuana withdrawal syndromes 3. marijuana relapse. It is also hypothesized that marijuana withdrawal will be associated with increased levels of stress hormones. A secondary measure will be salivary cortisol.
