Peginterferon Plus Ribavirin for Hepatitis C Patients Concomitant With Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Combination therapy with pegylated interferon-alpha plus ribavirin has greatly improved the treatment efficacy and is the mainstream of treatment for chronic hepatitis C infection. The efficacy and safety of pegylated interferon-alpha plus ribavirin combination therapy and its impact on the outcome in chronic hepatitis C patients concomitant with hepatocellular carcinoma deserve to be elucidated. The purposes of this study are: 1. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pegylated interferon-alpha 2a plus ribavirin combination therapy in chronic hepatitis C patients concomitant with hepatocellular carcinoma. 2. To investigate the role of baseline and on-treatment factors on the response to pegylated interferon-alpha 2a plus ribavirin combination therapy in chronic hepatitis C patients concomitant with hepatocellular carcinoma.

Efficacy of Sequential TACE and PVE on the Resectability of Hepatitis B Related HCC

A primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generally regarded as unresectable if the future liver remnant (FLR)≤40% of total liver volume in patient with underlying liver disease, such as hepatitis B. In China, TACE is the most common treatment for these unresectable HCC. Recently, PVE has been employed to enlarge the FLR of the patients so as to increase the resectability and surgical safety of major hepatectomies. In order to shut the arterio-portal shunt in the liver and control the tumor progress TACE sometimes is performed before PVE. In this study we design a randomized control trial to investigate the efficacy of sequential TACE and PVE on increasing the resectability of hepatitis B related HCC compared with TACE alone.

Recurrence and Distant Metastases in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated by Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization

This project will include at least 40 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who will receive transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) as a sole method for the management. The serum is collected before and at the 3rd and 7th day after TACE. The serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor, angiopoietin 2, endostatin and cathepsin L are determined. All patients will be evaluated according to the TNM system for the cancer staging before and 3 months after each session of treatment. The vascularity of tumor, the drug and the dose used for embolization, and the area of infarction will be recorded. These data will be compared with the clinical courses of the patients to obtain the most suitable way in the management of these patients.

This is a single arm phase II trial of Gemcitabine and Oxaliplatin (Gem-Ox) with Erlotinib (Tarceva) for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and biliary tree cancer (BTC) patients with platelet counts 100,000/µL. The purpose of this study is to determine the tumor control rate following treatment with GEM-OX combined with Tarceva in patients with HCC. Tumor control rate is defined as the percentage of patients achieving a complete response, partial response, or stable disease at 24 weeks following treatment.

The Role of Low Molecular Weight Heparins in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major tumor type worldwide, especially in China as the sequence of hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis. Activation of the coagulation system occurs commonly in patients with malignancy. Several studies have suggested that anticoagulant therapy may improve survival in patients with malignancy. The low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) lend themselves to such studies because of their effects in experimental models of malignancy and the relative ease of administration compared with unfractionated heparin. The purpose of the present RCT was to determine whether addition of LMWH to transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) would improve HCC patient outcome compared with TACE alone.

Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) Therapy of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) With Blocking Tumor Blood Temporarily and Enhancing Perfusion

According to radiology imaging, the patients of HCC are divided into two groups(hypovascular tumor group and moderately vascular tumor group). Every group is divided into TACE therapy with balloon catheter subgroup and regular TACE therapy subgroup. Patients take the TACE therapy each 45 days, and have MRI diffusion examine or CT one week before next therapy. All objects are observed until the end event happening or in the group for 6 months.

Long-term Follow-up of HALT-C Sustained Virological Responders

The Hepatitis C Antiviral Long-term Treatment against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) trial is a multicenter clinical trial conducted to assess the effects of long-term antiviral drug therapy on the progression of liver disease in patients who have advanced chronic hepatitis C and have not responded to prior therapies. Chronic hepatitis C is a long-lasting viral infection affecting the liver that may lead to permanent liver damage and cirrhosis (replacement of healthy liver cells by scar tissue). If left untreated, a proportion of patients with chronic hepatitis C will be at risk for complications of liver disease. The drug therapy in the HALT-C trial was designed to clear the hepatitis C virus from the patient s system in order to prevent or mitigate these potential complications. The purpose of this research is to determine if patients with chronic hepatitis C who experienced clearance of hepatitis C virus (known as a sustained virologic response, or SVR) during the HALT-C trial have developed any complications of their liver disease. This study will include 180 subjects who participated in the initial phase of the HALT-C trial and experienced an SVR. The participants will visit the National Institutes of Health for an in-person study visit. During the visit, patients will have blood drawn for lab tests to monitor the progress of their liver disease, and may be asked to undergo an ultrasound examination of the liver to detect any abnormalities that may be attributed to liver cancer. Patients will also answer questions about their medical history particularly any outcomes or events related to their hepatitis C that have occurred since the HALT-C trial and may be asked to sign a release of information to allow researchers to obtain medical records from other clinics or physicians where they have received treatment. ...
