A bacterium called Group A Steptoccoccus or "strep" is commonly found in the nose and throat of healthy adults and children and can cause a variety of illnesses. If this bacterium infects another part of the body one or more times, children may get Rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The purpose of this community based study is to see how many children between 5-15 years of age have RHD in Leon, Nicaragua. The study will also help to determine if the usual methods of detecting this disease are working. Researchers hope that this study will help to develop vaccines that may prevent "strep" infections to Nicaragua and other parts of the world. About 3,600 children will take part in the study. The children will participate for a minimum of 1 day and have a 6 month follow-up visit if they are identified as possible or probable RHD cases. Study procedures will include clinical exams and echocardiograms to determine the presence of RHD.
Some individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD) suffer from depression and use antidepressant medications to reduce symptoms. However, preliminary research has shown that exercise may be a more effective way to treat depression in these individuals. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of exercise in reducing depression and improving heart function in individuals with CHD.
Background. The ROSCAP Study was a randomized controlled trial in heart disease patients to test the effect of a smoking reduction intervention on cigarettes per day (cpd) and biochemical and clinical indicators of tobacco exposure. .
The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of fenofibric acid (ABT-335) + rosuvastatin calcium combination therapy with ABT-335 and rosuvastatin calcium monotherapy in subjects with multiple abnormal lipid levels in the blood.
The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of fenofibric acid (ABT-335) + atorvastatin combination therapy with ABT-335 and atorvastatin monotherapy in subjects with multiple abnormal lipid levels in the blood.
The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of fenofibric acid (ABT-335) + simvastatin combination therapy with ABT-335 and simvastatin monotherapy in subjects with multiple abnormal lipid levels in the blood.
Myocardial scintigraphy with 123I-MIBG allows for visual and semi-quantitative assessment of sympathetic cardiac innervation using the hear to mediastinum ratio (HMR). Impaired cardiac MIBG clearance may occur in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). The purpose of present study was to develop and validate a quantitative index for the assessment of cardiac MIBG uptake kinetics using SPECT/CT for diagnosis of CHF
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Omacor 4g/day on blood lipid parameters and on the function and stiffness of blood vessels in HIV infected patients on Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART)
This is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind trial, comparing clinical outcomes after the administration of high-dose dexamethasone versus placebo in patients undergoing heart surgery with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. The primary endpoint is the occurrence of major complications (including all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, renal failure, and prolonged mechanical ventilation) in the first 30 days after surgery.
