Filter by:College women are at risk for eating disorders, which have profound health impacts. Cross-sectional studies have shown that the use of dietary self-monitoring is associated with eating disorder risk among college students. However, causality cannot be established with cross-sectional studies. This study utilizes a randomized controlled trial design to examine how the use of a popular dietary self-monitoring smartphone application impacts college females' well-being, including eating disorder risk. We hypothesize those who are randomized to dietary self-monitoring will have a greater increase in eating disorder risk compared to the control group.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of training given to obese female students in mid-adolescence period for improving nutrition, physical activity, and menstrual symptoms on the improvement of their healthy lifestyle behaviors and menstrual symptoms. The research sample consisted of 128 obese female students divided into groups as intervention and control. In this randomized controlled trial, pretest-posttest control group and random process were used. In the first stage of the study, total of 12 hours of training, 120 minutes for each course per week, was provided. In the second stage, 120 minutes of reinforcement training were given every month for three months. The study lasted 16 weeks totally. Personal Information Form, Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale II (HLBS-II), Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire (MSQ) and Student Follow-up Schedule were used as data collection tools. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics 23 Version. Hypotheses were (i) there was a difference between the total HLBS-II and MSQ scores of the students before and after the training and (ii) there was a correlation between the scales.
Interventions to increase the number of people cycling regularly are likely to induce a range of health and societal benefits, including reduced incidence of heart disease, cancer and obesity, improved mental health and well-being, and reduced road congestion and air pollution. They are also likely to provide tangible financial and in-kind benefits to employers and society, through reduced workforce absenteeism, increased productivity and decreased use of NHS resources. However, increasing the number of people cycling regularly is complex and interventions undertaken to date have only been modestly successful. Thus, to induce a step-change in the number of people cycling in the United Kingdom (UK), in line with British Cycling and HSBC UK's stated aim of getting two million more people on bikes, new approaches are needed. The research team have been working with staff and management at British Cycling and HSBC to co-develop a novel, multi-component intervention for delivery at HSBC offices to increase the number of employees cycling regularly. The intervention has four main components: 1) a six (intermediate) or nine (foundation) week practical skills programme; 2) cycle provision (tune-up/loan/subsidised purchase) schemes; 3) establishment of a cycle-friendly workplace culture; 4) a cycle app. The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of this intervention in a before-and-after study in four HSBC offices around the UK.
The study is a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial design to evaluate an online video series developed by a community-based organization in Singapore for gay, bisexual and queer men. A total of 300 HIV-negative, gay, bisexual and queer men in Singapore aged 18 to 29 years old will be recruited with the assistance of the partner community-based organization (CBO), Action for AIDS Singapore. Recruitment will utilize both online and offline channels, and with the help of other CBOs in Singapore. Participants should also not have watched the video prior to their participation in this study, which will be ascertained through a questionnaire. Participants will subsequently be randomized into the intervention arm (n=150) and the control arm (n=150). The treatment group (n=150) will be assigned the intervention along with sexual health information via a pamphlet, while the control group (n=150) will be assigned only the sexual health information via a pamphlet. This will be conducted through block randomization.
Peer support workers with lived experience of homelessness will provide advocacy, supportive counselling, assistance with navigating the system, and role-modeling for people experiencing homelessness in emergency departments in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada. Previous research has demonstrated that people experiencing homelessness experience barriers to care and poor health outcomes, including increased risk of dying, and are frequent users of the emergency department for physical and mental health needs. The benefits of peer support have been studied in hospital psychiatric units and with people experiencing homelessness, but no studies have yet explored the potential impact of peer support workers on homelessness in the emergency department. The investigators plan to do a 12-month randomized study of peer support workers compared to usual care in the emergency department, and evaluate outcomes such as physical health, mental health, addictions, and behaviours, as well as cost-effectiveness and changes in how people experiencing homelessness seek health care. The investigators hope that the findings of this study will provide additional knowledge and evidence for future efforts to improve care for people experiencing homelessness.
Prostate cancer (PCa) is among the most widespread in the male population and represents 20% of all cancers diagnosed from the age of fifty, in Italy. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a common strategy of treatment that is used for increase survival. However, ADT is associated with significant side effects, such as fatigue, loss of muscle mass and strength, cognitive decline and reduced quality of life, with an increased the risk for falls and fractures, cardiometabolic syndrome and cardiovascular events. The numerous side effects from ADT could potentially be countered by the regular Physical Exercise (PE), with favorable effects on body composition, physical performance, bone health and cognitive function. However, to maintain the results obtained, PE must be undertaken regularly, becoming a healthy habit of life. The patient motivation is therefore a fundamental element for guaranteeing adherence to the intervention and its integration into people's lifestyle. The study aim is to analyzed patients with PCa at the time of diagnosis regarding their lifestyle, includes regular PE, and motivation to make changes about their habits. In addition, the investigators will describe the perceived barriers by patients about this change. The data collected will allow the development of an experimental intervention of PE, associated with therapeutic education, and assess its impact on the health of patient undergoing ADT, considering the realistic possibilities of application in the daily life of these patients, testing its feasibility and safety, the compliance and the satisfaction of the patients.
In prior research the Mobility and Vitality Lifestyle Program for healthy aging and weight management (MOVE UP) was effective in producing a mean loss of >= 5% body weight, with increased physical activity and reduced fatigue. This research will pilot a modified and streamlined version to see if it will be similarly effective for caregivers of family members or friends who have dementia, physical and/or developmental issues, or health problems.
This study is testing the efficacy of the integrative approach to: 1. teach 5th grade children menu board calorie literacy as measured by our novel recently validated menu board calorie literacy (MBCL) instrument; 2. provide strategies designed to improve food purchasing behaviors; and 3. facilitate the transmission of core lesson messages from children to parents via a procedure that we have termed "Child Mediated Health Communication (CMHC)".
This research hypothesizes that moderate physical activity in a "green environment" (e.g. a forest preserve path) has increased benefits on psychological measures (stress, anxiety, mood, depression, attention) and on physiological measures (Heart Rate Variability, Blood Glucose, Salivary Cortisol) when directly compared to activity in a "gray environment" (urban or suburban sidewalks). The study design is a randomized crossover design in which each subject is assigned randomly to a group which determines the order in which participants will walk in each location. Subjects will take three 50-minute walks per location in one week, with half of the subjects taking the urban walks first as per group assignment. Control data are collected on days when participants do not walk. Physiological data are taken during walks and control periods (heart rate, heart rate variation). Biomarker samples (saliva, dried blood spots) are taken on selected days. Psychological data are take before and after walks and control periods.
The aim of the present study is to test the effects of a digital meditation intervention and/or a healthy eating intervention in a sample of UCSF employees with overweight and obesity (BMI>=25kg/m2) who report mild to moderate stress. We will randomize UCSF employees to 8-weeks of a digital meditation intervention (using the commercially available application, Headspace), a healthy eating intervention, a digital meditation+healthy eating intervention, or a waitlist control condition.
