Filter by:This study will assess the effect of inhaled AZD5634 on Mucociliary clearance (MCC) in patients with Cystic fibrosis (CF) after single-dose administration.
When developing new medications for lung diseases like Cystic Fibrosis (CF), scientists perform lab experiments using cells from the airways, physiology studies of how the lungs change when a drug is given, and clinical studies to determine how drugs affect overall health. The investigators of this study are seeking to develop computer models that will predict how patients will respond to drugs by just doing lab studies on cell samples from their noses. Such models would allow for medications to be developed more rapidly for all patients and allow treatments to be personalized as well. In order to develop these computer models a series of tests will be performed on patients who have CF. Tests will include sampling cells from the nose and measuring lung physiology using a combination of different imaging, breathing, and other studies performed both before and after participants take a therapy. Similar tests will be performed on people who do not have CF, and on the parents of the CF participants who carry a single CF gene because this will provide information on how specific genes might affect CF lung disease.
Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis pose a huge financial burden to the health care system. This includes the cost of medical care, employment, disability-related issues and reduced survival. Specifically, the complication of cirrhosis known as hepatic encephalopathy (HE) especially hinders quality of life, the performance of activities of daily living and the ability to drive a motor vehicle in affected subjects. The hidden burden to family members and caregivers of these subjects, however, has been all but ignored to date. Evaluation of family members and caregivers is essential. The burden of caring for someone with liver disease can result in added cost for health care for family members and caregivers and is typically not recognized. The importance of the burden to families and family members or caregivers resulting from other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's has been well evaluated and specific strategies to educate and counsel family members and caregivers have been elaborated. This is important because as the findings of this study have emerged, we have found that both Veterans and non-Veterans with cirrhosis and HE have a poor quality of life, worse socio-economic status and place a significantly higher burden on their family members or caregivers than those without HE
Animal models have demonstrated the role of aldosterone in left ventricular remodeling involving fibrosis, apoptosis and hypertrophy. Myocardial fibrosis is a risk factor for serious arrhythmia and sudden death in ischemic and idiopathic hypertrophic heart disease. It is accepted that patients with primary aldosteronism have a higher prevalence of LV hypertrophy , arterial involvement and increased cardiovascular risk. In humans, a link has been demonstrated between aldosterone and heart failure as well as the benefit of the administration of an anti -aldosterone drug to lower mortality in this population , regardless of blood pressure level . The administration of spironolactone ( aldosterone ) in hypertensive rats has prevented the occurrence of aortic fibrosis . Plasma aldosteronism in humans has been associated with inflammation, fibrosis and aortic stiffness . However, primary aldosteronism is generally associated with so-called secondary hypertension . Chronic hypertension alone is a recognized etiological factor of myocardial hypertrophy ( myocardial fibrosis very advanced ) . The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of MRI hyperaldosteronism on the heart.
This postmarketing N of 2 study is designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of open-label ivacaftor treatment in two sisters with cystic fibrosis and pancreatic sufficiency.
Cystic fibrosis is so far a disease whose treatment remains essentially symptomatic care teams perceive the boundaries of a support mainly focused on drug treatments. The patient had no other choice but to learn to live with their disease, the goal is to make every effort so that tames the disease while maintaining high self-esteem that gives meaning to his life, allowing, among other things, a good grip of treatment. Through this research we hope to encourage the integration of art therapy in the course of care of cystic fibrosis patients, from children to adults before and after transplantation, in connection with the patient education and counseling
The investigators will examine the effect of introducing palliative in patients with end-stage idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, refractory to the pharmacological treatment or not deemed to be treated, on patient-reported outcomes and end-of-life care. The investigators will randomly assign patients who receive either early palliative care integrated with standard respiratory care or standard respiratory care alone. Quality of life and symptoms will assessed at baseline and at 12 weeks The primary outcome will be the change in the quality of life and symptoms at 12 months.
Patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and their caregivers will be randomized to receive this intervention or usual care. The intervention will include information about the disease, self-management strategies, and introduction to advanced care planning in a format with enhanced content available across multiple domains (face-to-face, printed material, digital (tablet) delivered by an interventionist. The usual care group will be provided with routine printed patient education. At the end of life, IPF patients and their caregivers experience stress, symptom burden, poor quality of life, and inadequate preparedness for end-of-life care planning. The proposed study will measure feasibility, acceptability, and impact of a Supportive Care intervention.
This study evaluates two doses of RPL554 and placebo in adult patients with cystic fibrosis. All patients receive all three treatments in a randomised sequence.
Retrospective study of all patients diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis during January 2001 to July 2016 at West China Hospital by review of medical records. The following variables will be retrospectively studied: age, sex, first symptoms, clinical characteristics, pathology, treatment, stage, complications of cirrhosis, other autoimmune diseases and long-term outcome.
