Filter by:The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of using new app-based technology to improve self-care, compared to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes. The hypothesis is that the intervention, i.e. using the new technology, will have a greater positive effect on physical activity levels and outcomes of HbA1c than usual care.
The primary objective of the study is to determine whether participation in a pre-bariatric surgery physical activity and behavior modification/education program (ENCOURAGEING START) that is tailored to the unique needs of obese bariatric surgery patients, improves physical fitness, surgical outcomes, patient health and quality of life. Short- (one year) and long- (five year) term outcomes will be compared to matched historical controls (1:1) based on age, gender, and body mass index (BMI) from the existing Manitoba Centre for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (CMBS) database. Our findings will determine whether a pre-bariatric surgery physical activity and behavior modification/education program results in improve surgical and patient outcomes and inform the development of evidence-based physical activity (PA) guidelines for bariatric surgery patients and improved CMBS program delivery.
The ability to upregulate fat oxidation at appropriate times such as during fasting, low to moderate intensity exercise and after a high fat meal, is popularly advocated. This is presumably due to the perception that a high capacity to utilise fat may improve (ultra) endurance performance and help in the regulation of body fat and metabolic diseases. In accordance, impaired fat use at rest has been associated with obesity and insulin resistance (Kelley et al., 1999). However, there is inconclusive and / or a lack of systematic evidence, especially in a large diverse range of adults, exploring: 1) Whether whole body fat use during exercise is altered in individuals with overweight or obesity compared to lean individuals 3) The intra-individual variability in whole-body fat use at rest and during exercise 4) Physiological, metabolic, lifestyle and genetic characteristics that are associated with whole-body fat use at rest and during exercise Therefore, the objectives of this study are three-fold: 1. To explore whether whole body fat use is associated with body composition 2. To explore associations between whole-body fat use and physiological, metabolic, lifestyle and genetic variables 3. To assess the intra-individual variability of whole-body fat use. This study is an observational, exploratory cross-sectional study. A wide range of 'healthy' and 'at-risk of metabolic disease' adults will be recruited. Participants will be asked to visit a laboratory at the University of Bath four times. Visit 1 is a screening and study familiarisation visit. Visits 2 and 3 are to be completed within 7-14 days and involve lifestyle monitoring (dietary and physical activity), a one-off urine and blood sample, assessment of fuel use at rest and during exercise (the latter through an incremental graded cycling exercise test to exhaustion). Visit 4 is to assess body composition via a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan in addition to an optional skeletal muscle and / or fat tissue biopsy.
Participants will complete 11 sessions. These include screening, 5 sessions where exercise or rest (according to group assignment) are paired with practice of a motor task, MRI and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) before and after the intervention will be used to assess neuroplasticity (ability for the brain to reorganize and create new connections).
Questionnaires are often irreplaceable tools of collection of information in research and in the clinical practice. Coupled with other measures, they can be simple complementary tools, but questionnaires are sometimes the only way to collect data, such as self-service efficacy. The objective of this study is a validation of the French translation of the ASES. To guarantee the comparability between the original version and the translated version, the translation of a questionnaire supposes two essential stages: a literal translation and an adaptation to the cultural context, to the habits of life and to the idioms of the target population. This new version will afterward be validated with patient's troop.
The purpose of this project is to investigate whether the glucose response in type 1 diabetes patients measured using Continuous Glucose Monitoring measurement is reproducible in repeated standardized test sessions that include physical activity.
Currently there are very few studies that integrate classical interventions (screening clinics) and online tools in order to obtain sustainable lifestyle changes in workers efficiently. The current project aims to evaluate the efficiency of a combined approach versus the more traditional approach. Health Data collected by CAPSANA in the workplace between 2012 and 2014 showed that, out of 4231 workers, 69% should aim to do more active lifestyle and 74% to a better nutrition profile. In addition, 53% of the sampled population were overweight. In this context, the current project aims to motivate aims to motivate and follow individuals towards a healthier lifestyle. To do so, the Activate Your Health will be implemented and tested using various options (limited to more complete) in several companies.
The overall objective of this project is to evaluate and validate the accuracy and usability of a deployed beta sensor-based system. This is a cross-sectional validation study of 100 apparently health community dwelling adults aged 60+ years. Participants will perform standardized lifestyle, exercise and sedentary type physical activities in a clinic laboratory and home setting.
Background: It has been shown that adults with Multiple sclerosis (MS) have less leg strength than their peers, as well as impaired balance, which has led to an increased prevalence of falls in this population.The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of 8-weeks aquatic exercise training in balance, endurance and speed in women with MS. Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 32 women with clinically-definite relapsing-remittent MS who were registered through the Isfahan MS association volunteered for this study. They randomly selected an aquatic exercise (n = 17) and control (n = 15) groups. Aquatic exercise group completed a 8-week aquatic exercise training program consisted of three sessions per week, each session lasting 45 to 60 minutes 50 to 75 percent of their maximum heart rate reserve on 20-25 degree centigrade's, whereas the control group was instructed to maintain their current lifestyle. The balance of angry was surveyed with using of Berg analyze, speed and endurance 6 minutes walking test before starting of exercise program and after 4 weeks and at the end of 8 weeks was analyzed. The obtained data's were analyzed using analysis of variance with repeated measures.
This study aimed to determine if eight-weeks of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation could improve adiponectin and cardiovascular disease risk factors in overweight coronary heart disease patients. Patients were included in the study if: they were approved to do so following a physical, physiological and psychological test; did not take part in regular physical activity; had stable heart failure for at least 3 months. Exclusion criteria included: a history of surgery within the preceding 4 months; had an unstable angina, acute phase of myocardial infarction, and/or unstable arrhythmia; had obstructive cardiomyopathy, exercise-induced ischemia or arrhythmias, uncontrolled arrhythmias, resting blood pressure more than 200/120 millimeters mercury, aortic stenosis, and/or peripheral artery disease; exercise limitations due to neuromuscular and/or musculoskeletal disease; had any health problems that prevented maximum effort on the treadmill test. Target population included of all patients with a history of myocardial infarction and diagnosis of congestive heart failure who were referred to Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Centre. 60overweight coronary heart disease patients were randomly assigned to either an eight-week, three times weekly exercise group (n=30), or a non-exercising control group (n=30). Exercise sessions took place at 60-85% of maximal heart rate, lasted 45-60 minutes and included a 10-minute warm-up, 40 minutes of aerobic exercises, consisting of stationary cycling, walking and/or jogging, flexibility, balance exercises, and weight-bearing activity and a 10-minute cool-down.
