Lithium is a mainstay in the treatment of bipolar disorder, and a frequently used adjunctive therapy for major depressive disorder. It is accepted practice to monitor lithium serum levels to monitor for efficacy and toxicity. However, studies on the difference in lithium levels between once and twice daily dosing, which also assess the impact of kidney function are scarce. The aim of this study is to quantify this pharmacokinetic difference, identify the impact of kidney function, in the context of estimating effects to inform feasibility and sample size needed for a larger well-powered study.

Effectiveness of Educational Program on Parenting Stress and Coping Mechanism Among Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Amman, Jordan

Health and well being of children are inextricably linked to the physical, emotional and psychological of their parents. Autism Spectrum Disorder is one of the neurological developmental disorders characterized by moderate to severe impairments in social interactions, language, and cognitive development, as well as included repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, and emotional distress. Coping with a stressful situation is classified as one of the most challenges in one's life. The overall aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the educational program on parenting stress and coping mechanism among parents of children with ASD in Amman, Jordan at baseline, post-test and at two months follow-up assessment. Two hundred parents of children with Autism spectrum disorder will be assigned to the intervention group (n = 100) and the control group (n = 100). Measures of parent stress and coping mechanism using the parent stress index(PSI) and Brief COPE will administer at pre-, post-treatment, and 2-months follow-up.

Cognitive Bias Modification for OCD

This study will conduct the development and preliminary evaluation of Cognitive Bias Modification for Interpretation (CBM-I) and Approach Avoidance Training (AAT) as augmentations to treatment as usual for OCD and related disorders. CBM-I refers to computerized interventions designed to directly manipulate interpretation bias through repeated practice on a training task, thereby inducing cognitive changes in a relatively automatic or implicit manner. In AAT, automatic approach tendencies toward feared stimuli are re-trained. Specifically, this study will examine the feasibility, acceptability, and clinical outcomes associated with CBM-I and AAT. Adults with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders will be recruited from a treatment program for these disorders and participants will be randomly assigned to either receive: 1) eight sessions of CBM-I or eight sessions of psychoeducation as a control condition, or 2) AAT or eight sessions of an inactive (sham) version of the AAT training.

Vitamin B6 and B12 in the Treatment of Movement Disorders Induced by Antipsychotics

D2 dopaminergic receptor blockers, used to treat schizophrenia, can lead to the onset of movement disorders. Drug-induced movement disorders encompass several syndromes. Parkinsonism, dystonia, dyskinesia and akathisia are the most prevalent. All of them lead to poor adherence to the treatment instituted, decrease in the quality of life, relapses and hospitalizations. The pathophysiology of drug-induced movement disorders is complex and poorly understood, but seems to be associated with oxidative stress, as a result of an increase in free radicals generated from dopamine metabolism. Treatment strategies following the onset of drug-induced movement disorders include neuroleptic discontinuation, use of atypical antipsychotics and anticholinergics. A pre-clinical study showed that the antioxidant properties of vitamins B6 and B12, alone or in combination, prevented the development of orofacial dyskinesia induced by haloperidol. This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effects of vitamins B6 and B12 on the treatment of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder who present with tardive dyskinesia, dystonia and parkinsonism.

Identification of Multi-modal Bio-markers for Early Diagnosis and Treatment Prediction in Schizophrenia Individuals

This study aims to screen and validate multi-scale bio-markers for early diagnosis and medication monitoring for early schizophrenia, including the genetic, neurobiochemistry, neuroimaging and eletrophysiological measures. Based on the validated bio-markers, the present study further tries to build several prediction models for early differential diagnosis of schizophrenia from healthy controls and other mental diseases (such as the major depression and anxiety disorders), biological sub-typing and diagnosis of the schizophrenia sub-types, and early prediction of the medication effects.

A Transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder

This study will examine the use of a transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian Treatment (TranS-C) in treating Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in Chinese adults. Sleep disturbance is highly comorbid with a range of psychological disorders, especially MDD. MDD is a major public health concern and a leading cause of disability worldwide. A shift in treatment perspectives, from a disorder-specific approach to a transdiagnostic approach, has been proposed. While the disorder-specific approach tends to understand and treat different mental disorders as independent psychological problems, the transdiagnostic approach aims to identify common clinical features (e.g. sleep disturbances) across a range of psychological disorders. The transdiagnostic approach would potentially facilitate timely dissemination of evidence-based psychological treatments and contribute to significant public health implications. This study will be a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of TranS-C for MDD. TranS-C integrates elements of evidence-based interventions, namely cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, delayed sleep phase type, and interpersonal and social rhythm therapy. Prior to all study procedures, an online informed consent (with phone support) will be obtained from potential participants. Around 150 eligible participants will be randomly assigned to the TranS-C group or the care-as-usual control group (CAU group) in a ratio of 1:1. The randomization will be performed by an independent assessor using a computer-generated list of numbers. No deception is necessary. Participants in the TranS-C group will receive TranS-C once per week for 6 consecutive weeks respectively. The group treatment will be delivered by a clinical psychology trainee under the supervision of a clinical psychologist. The TranS-C group will complete a set of online/paper-and-pencil questionnaires before the treatment commences, 1-week, and 12-week after the treatment sessions are completed. The CAU group will complete the same set of online/paper-and-pencil questionnaires during the same periods.

Articular Disc Displacements are the most common TMJ arthropathy and the articular distraction technique is one of the most common therapeutic resources. It is a technique almost exclusively performed by the physiotherapist and / or dentist, with repeated applications over an extended period of treatment, that can reach several weeks or months, difficult to perform manually by the patient on an ambulatory basis. Currently there are no ambulatory mandibular exercise devices that aim to execute articular distraction. Thus, the objective of this work was to study, design and develop a device capable of performing and / or assisting patients in the articular distraction maneuver.
