Filter by:Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) techniques offer a novel treatment approach for depression and have shown promising efficacy. However, there is no published data to date on their effectiveness as a maintenance treatment. This study will investigate ways of using TES as a maintenance treatment to prevent relapse in depression.

Individuals with serious mental illness have greater morbidity from physical illness and mortality than the general population, but tend not to initiate or sustain engagement in health promotion interventions. Although promising weight management and wellness interventions have been developed for this population, they are very intensive and tend to have low enrollment, high attrition, and low reach. This pilot study will investigate a novel low-demand intervention that may be initially more acceptable, the Get Moving and Get Well! (GMGW) program. The primary objectives of the proposed study are to investigate the effects of participation in the GMGW program on measures of behavioral activation, self-efficacy, physical activity, general physical and mental health, mood, participants' intent to engage in more intensive physical health interventions, and actual engagement in those programs. Results of this pilot study will inform a future full-scale study of GMGW.
Mood disorders -- major depression, bipolar disorder, and dysthymia -- frequently recur; they affect one in four people during their lives. At Sunnybrook, 75% of inpatient admissions are due to mood disorders. Mental health telemetry (MHT) lets patients in the community use cell phones to track the severity of their mood symptoms over time, and enables clinicians to view these symptom ratings in real-time. Evidence suggests that MHT is better for detecting exacerbations of illness earlier than standard clinical practice alone. In this study, we will assess if MHT can reduce re-hospitalization rates in previously-hospitalized patients with mood disorders.
The primary aims of this study are to: 1. Quantify serotonin transporter (5-HTT) binding potential (BP) in vivo in bipolar disorder patients (BPD) during a major depressive episode (MDE). 2. Assess the effect of lithium treatment of bipolar disorder on 5-HTT. 3. Assess the effect of lithium treatment of bipolar disorder on 5-HT1A BP. 4. Assess the effect of lamotrigine treatment of bipolar disorder on 5-HTT and 5-HT1A BP. 5. Assess the effect of lithium treatment of unipolar depression on 5-HTT BP.
For the moment, the detection of a mood episode in Bipolar Disorder (BD) relies on the appearance of the first clinical signs that the clinician detect or that the patient becomes aware of and reports to the clinician. Since physiological parameters such as cardiac rhythms, respiratory rate, voice characteristics and actigraphy seem to be related to the onset of a mood episode, information collected through the combined monitoring of multiple selected physiological parameters (such as cardiac rhythms, respiratory rate, movements, voice) during wake and sleep time, using wearable user friendly systems included into garments as well as with a smartphone, may offer a new perspective in the long-term treatment of BD.
The aim of the study is to examine whether determining treatment strategies based upon Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) genotype will improve drug response rates and clinical outcome in patients with psychosis. The investigators predict that prospectively testing CYP2D6 genotype and using this information to treat psychotic patients with risperidone will improve clinical outcomes. Specifically, CYP2D6 poor metabolizers who are treated with low dose and slow titration of risperidone will do better than those who are treated with usual dose and titration approach in terms of rates of side effects and clinical improvement.
