Filter by:This study aims to understand the role of Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound on craving levels for cocaine as evidenced by diagnostic imaging of the dorsal anterior insula (dAI) and subjective ratings. Data analysis will serve to show if 1) LIFU is safe and effective and to 2) examine the effects of LIFU on dAI BOLD activity and craving in response to cocaine cue-exposure. The study will screen 60 individuals with Cocaine Use Disorder (CUD) to arrive at 30 enrolled subjects, based on a 2:1 screen/randomization ratio.
The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the efficacy of screening for liver disease with liver stiffness measurement on abstinence or light consumption after 6 months in individuals who are receiving treatment for alcohol use disorder and without a history of liver disease. The investigators will conduct a randomized controlled trial with concealed allocation comparing A) an invitation to a liver stiffness measurement, blood sampling and leaflet on alcohol-related disease (intervention) with B) an invitation to blood sampling (control). The primary outcome is 'abstinence or light consumption' (≤ 10 units/week) throughout the last months, and assessed 6 months after randomization.
Orthodontic removable retainers are appliances that hold the position of the upper and lower teeth after fixed braces treatment and they can be removed from a patient's mouth. Basically, there are 2 types of removable retainers; Hawley retainer and vacuum-formed retainer. Hawley retainer is made of an acrylic resin plate that covers the palate for the upper jaw and the back of the arch facing the tongue for the lower jaw. It has thin stainless-steel wires incorporated to fit the first molars and the six front teeth as retention. Vacuum-formed retainer (VFR) is a clear or transparent plastic retainer. It covers the teeth completely and a small part of the gum. The investigators' interest is to determine whether the storage conditions will affect the amount of bacteria, appearance and strength of removable retainers. Primarily, the amount of bacteria that sticks to the retainers may cause overall dental and oral health effects such as mouth odour, dental caries and gum problems. The investigators would also like to assess the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of participants after storing retainers in different storage conditions by answering a questionnaire.
Improving the quality of life of preterm children by 2035 is the top priority of worldwide health organisations, including the WHO. Every year, 15 million preterm infants, particularly those under 32 weeks of age, are at significant risk of neurocognitive impairments with adverse health consequences (disability, developmental delay, disease), exacerbated by the lack of post-hospital care for newborns. Intervening on the health of the preterm newborn through certain types of "touch" from its first days of life to activate its cutaneous senses permits, in reality, a significant improvement in the clinical state of the infant, hence promoting its growth, development, and social behaviour. In the neonatal period, during which significant neurological development occurs, tactile interactions and close physical proximity between infants and caregivers have significant short-term effects on the health of premature infants (weight gain, brain and vision development) and medium- to long-term effects on their development and expression of sociability. The likelihood that a premature newborn may develop attention and autism spectrum disorders, brain, gastrointestinal, and respiratory difficulties, as well as sleep disorders during the preschool years, is so high that clinical and social settings must prioritise care. Utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fRMI), computerized electroencephalogram (EEG), and metabolomics, the research aims to explore the effects of touch, including physiotherapy and manual therapy (OMT) approaches, on brain activity. This research intends to examine the impact of touch on premature infants' brain activity (physical biomarker) and metabolic activity (biological biomarker).
Neurocognitive disorders and hypertension occur commonly with aging. While, by definition, older adults are at high cardiovascular risk, there is no guideline exist currently on blood pressure management of elderly hypertension. However, studies have shown that in aging adults, high blood pressure helps prevent against cognitive decline, and low blood pressure on antihypertensive drugs could accelerate it. This study aims at investigating if pharmacological treatment of hypertension in the very elderly is influenced by presence and severity of neurocognitive disorders. Our research hypothesis is that the drug management of hypertension in patients 80 years of age or older more is all the less aggressive as the neurocognitive disorders are advanced.
The study aims to examine the efficacy of a telehealth-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) + benzodiazepine taper (BZ-TP) program in facilitating reductions in benzodiazepine use among patients who are prescribed opioids for pain.
Globally, tuberculosis (TB) is one of the main causes of death and the leading cause from a single infectious agent. In 2020, an estimated 9.9 million people developed TB and 1.5 million died. Millions of people remain undiagnosed with TB, hindering efforts to end TB. TB tests have inadequate accuracy or performance characteristics for implementation across all populations and settings. None of the tests meet the WHO-Target-Product Profile for TB screening and most need specialized laboratory staff and infrastructure, making them unsuitable for primary health care (PHC). The overall aims for this project are to: 1. Accelerate the introduction/adoption of TB diagnostic tools and test combinations at PHC, for the timely detection of TB and improved linkage to treatment 2. Develop conditions for sustainable and equitable access to TB diagnostics tools and test combinations within PHC, 3. Strengthen global alliances and national partnerships to enable scale-up. The study is split into two major Phases. This application is focused on Phase 1. Specific Phase 1 objectives are to: 4. Evaluate the performance of selected TB diagnostic tools, and 5. Identify TB test combinations that increase the proportion of people diagnosed with bacteriologically confirmed TB. Methods in Brief: Activities will be conducted in Bangladesh, Brazil, Kenya, Cameroon, Malawi, Nigeria, and Vietnam. Each country will study selected priority populations at risk of TB, including adults attending PHC centers and district hospitals; people living with HIV (PLHIV); marginalized populations (internally displaced, refugees and pastoralists), and children. Activities within countries will use standardized protocols for evaluating diagnostic tests and combinations.
This study aims to compare the efficacy of two types of interventions, which are acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as compared with virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) for alleviating psychological dependence on alcohol and preventing relapse. It also assesses the changes of EEG in patients with alcohol use disorder after completion of the above related interventions. In this study 120 subjects with alcohol use disorder who have completed 2 weeks of in-patient detoxification will be randomized into three groups (VRET, ACT and treatment-as-usual control groups) and undergo respective interventions. Then assessment will be performed at four timelines (baseline, 4 weeks after baseline which is immediately after completion of intervention, 12 weeks after baseline, and 24 weeks after baseline assessment).
Immersive VR (IVR) is based on the generation and projection of images from different perspectives. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is considered one of the 5 most common mental disorders and one of the 20 most disabling diseases according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Its vital prevalence is about 2.5%. This study aims to establish the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral intervention - individual and group - using IVR in patients diagnosed with OCD compared to a group receiving standard treatment by the Mental Health Center. A sample will be obtained from the list of all patients registered in the Mental Health Service of the University Hospital of Vic (Vic, Catalonia) with the primary or secondary diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5) and in active treatment status in the period between January 2021 and January 2023. Randomized controlled clinical trial. Variables: sociodemographic, clinical, OCD symptom follow-up and quality of life. Measurement instruments: Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Immersive Tendencies Questionnaire (ITQ), Presence Questionnaire, EuroQoL-5D (EQ-5D). Inclusion criteria: Patients over 18 years of age with a primary or secondary diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with one of the following specifiers: with good or acceptable introspection (1) or with little introspection (2); persons with current activity at the Mental Health Center. Exclusion criteria: patients with a diagnosis of intellectual disability, autistic spectrum disorder, active substance-related disorders, neuro-cognitive disorder and/or severe personality disorder; acute psychopathological decompensation; insufficient command of Catalan and/or Spanish; advanced disease and/or disease that significantly hinders the follow-up of the intervention.
This study is a multicenter, open-label, single-arm Phase 2 clinical trial. Approximately 15 participants with clinically diagnosed bipolar disorder (BD) type II and experiencing a current episode of depression will be included in this study. The participants will receive an individualized dosing regimen (IDR) with at least one and up to three doses of GH001 administered within a single day.
