This study is a randomized, single blinded, cross-over interventional study for evaluating the effect of acupuncture versus sham acupuncture in diabetic type 2 patient in insulin treatment. Primary end-point of the study is the difference of daily units of insulin between treatment and control group; secondary end point are the variation of glycated hemoglobin levels, lipids panel (total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, triglycerides), C reactive protein and adiponectin. Variation of epicardial fat thickness will be also evaluated by echography. Acupuncture and sham treatment will be administered twice a week for 3 months and, after a pause of one month and cross-over between groups for other three months. Acupuncture treatment will include use of somatic points (SP6; ST36; KI3; CV4; CV12; TE5; LI4; LI11; YinTang; ST28; BL23; BL22; BL20; BL13) and auricular points (most tender point on palpation with pressure feelers of 400 g on Stomach, Endocrine, Spleen, Kidney, Hungry, Shen man and Pancreas auricular points). Sham acupuncture will be applied distal from acupuncture points and areas used for treatment, with shallow insertion and without manipulation of the needle (15 needles in total on thorax, abdomen, back, arms and legs).
The objective is to assess the impact of 12 weeks supplement of sodium-butyrate twice daily or placebo on intestinal inflammation and albuminuria. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, two-site trial including 48 patients with type 1 diabetes, albuminuria and intestinal inflammation. Participants will be randomized 1:1 to active treatment or placebo for a period of 12 weeks. The primary endpoint is change from baseline to week 12 in intestinal inflammation, measured by fecal calprotectin.
To detect small fiber neuropathy in patients with possible or established diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) by skin biopsy and explore clinical characteristics and pathological features in Chinese patients with diabetes.
Our study aims to determine the incidence of undiagnosed and poorly controlled diabetes among surgical patients in Singapore using preoperative HbA1c as a screening tool.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical and microbiological performance of a probiotic formulation (Sunstar GUM Periobalance) as adjunctive to non-surgical periodontal therapy in patients with diabetes. The null hypothesis is that the adjunctive use of this probiotic formulation would not have any additional benefit over scaling and root planning in the number of residual pockets or in the microbiological impact of the treatment. Conversely, the alternative hypothesis is that the adjunctive use of this formulation would improve the clinical results of non-surgical periodontal therapy when compared to scaling and root planing alone, through a modification of the subgingival biofilm composition.
This project will test the efficacy of a multi-component behavioral intervention to improve metabolic control among older adolescents and emerging adults (16-21) with T1D, a group with chronic poor metabolic control. This intervention is grounded in self-determination theory which states that a youth who believes their diabetes management is self-directed, competent, and supported by others is more likely to consistently complete their diabetes self-care. This theory-driven intervention will be scalable to a variety of chronic illness contexts and the knowledge gained from this research will inform self-determination theory and different interventions targeting this population (currently there are no interventions that directly target emerging adults).
Background: Time-restricted feeding can improve insulin sensitivity, and increase fat oxidation in people with prediabetes independent of weight loss. It may also help people to lose weight. However, it has not been tested in people with type 2 diabetes. Plan of investigation: Participants meeting the eligibility criteria will be randomized to the TRF arm or the continuous eating arm. Both arms with be given a prescribed dietary plan to help them lose 5% of body weight. In the TRF they will permitted to eat between midday and 6pm. In the continuous eating arm they will be allowed to eat between 8am and 11pm. Participants will attend the nutrition clinic every two weeks to be weighed and be given personalized support to help them follow their assigned diet. Prior to starting the diets outcome measures will be taken: Glycaemia will be measured by a glucose tolerance test, and 7-day continuous glucose monitoring. HbA1c will be taken from fasting blood sample. In addition, the fasting sample will be taken for measurement of insulin, lipid profile and inflammatory markers. We will also use questionnaires to assess quality of life, a 3-day food diary to assess compliance to diet especially meal timings. Capillary ketones will also be used to assess whether compliance to the assigned fasting period. Outcome measures will also be taken during 7 days of the second month, and then the final seven days of the last month on the diet. The primary outcome is HbA1c.
The goal of this study is to determine the safety and efficacy of fresh metabolically active allogeneic umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) for the treatment of new-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to understand the mechanisms of protection. If proven effective, such a strategy can be used as a therapeutic option for T1D patients and potentially other autoimmune disorders.
The purpose of this study is to investigate if a diet high in plant protein improves kidney function in patients with kidney insufficiency and diabetes and/or hypertension and/or glomerulonephritis. The study is a non-blinded, randomized, controlled, cross-over-design with two intervention periods of each 14 days. Between the two interventions periods there is a washout period of 14 days. The participants are randomized to start with an individualized diet plan containing either high amounts of animal protein or high amounts of plant protein.
