The purpose of the study is to find out the effect of replacing testosterone in the form of a gel (Androgel®) on the amount of fat mass in males with low testosterone and diabetes.
This study compares metformin (current first-line medication) to pioglitazone (a newer diabetic medication currently approved for combination use). Whilst there is good evidence for the benefits of pioglitazone use in other populations, in light of the known weight gain effects of pioglitazone we believe further assessment is required in Indigenous Australians (in whom there is a strong predisposition for central fat deposition). This study will provide evidence regarding the medication appropriate for first line medication in Type 2 diabetes in this high risk population. This study will assist clinicians to make evidenced-based decisions regarding initial medical management of those with Type 2 diabetes (where there is currently a gap in evidence).
Intravitreal Bevacizumab is an effective treatment for the diffuse diabetic macular edema
Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) provides a safe and effective alternative to UFH for hemodialysis anticoagulation. While unfractionated (UF) heparin has been implicated in hyper-lipidemia, the effect of LMWHs on the lipid profile in non-diabetic patients on chronic hemodialysis remains controversial. The effect of LMWH in diabetic patients, a high risk group for developing hyper-lipidemia and cardio-vascular disease, has not been studied. The study intends to examine the long-term effects of the replacement of UFH by LMWH (tinzaparin sodium) on cardio-vascular outcomes and on lipoprotein profiles in a large group of diabetic patients stable on HD.
Hypothesis: that lipoic acid supplements taken orally will improve control of blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. This study will recruit 18 people with type 2 diabetes, whose diabetes is currently managed on oral agents. Each subject will then either take placebo for 12 weeks followed by lipoic acid for 12 weeks, or lipoic acid followed by placebo. A blood test for overall diabetes control will be taken at the start and end of each 12 week period, and the change in control will be compared for lipoic acid vs placebo.
The study is to evaluate and compare the effects on kidney function of three iodinated contrast media (CM) in patients at risk of kidney damage evaluating serum creatinine (Scr) concentrations up to three days after CM administration.
This study will help determine whether the use of a wireless glucose meter and and an internet-based automated diabetes management system to organize blood glucose values will help improve glucose control during the start of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy by an insulin pump device in patients with type 1 diabetes. Outcome measures to be determined include an assessment of glucose excursions, overall glucose control, health care team staff and patient time required and a satisfaction survey.
This study will examine the effect of oral thiamine (Vitamin B1) supplementation on pain in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
A single post-hospital discharge home visit by a geriatric nurse practitioner or geriatric fellow can bridge the gap and ease the transition for elderly frail patients returning home after hospital admission. We believe this intervention will reduce medication errors, ensure follow-up discharge plans, decrease re-hospitalization rates, and decrease morbidity and mortality.
