Filter by:Recent evidence suggests that increased levels of a circulation fat (free fatty acids or FFAs) can cause high blood pressure and cardiac complications. Intralipid is the only type of fat approved by the FDA for clinical use. It is usually used as nutrition support in malnourished patients. The investigators' preliminary studies indicate that Intralipid results in a significant rise in blood pressure, blood vessel stiffness, and inflammation in obese subjects. Olive oil can also be used as nutrition support. The effect of olive oil intravenous (IV) on blood pressure and inflammation is not known. In this study, the investigators will compare the effect of Intralipid and olive oil on blood pressure, blood vessel stiffness and inflammation in healthy subjects. The investigators hypothesize that Olive oil emulsions will result in less vascular changes and less inflammatory response than Intralipid solutions. Accordingly, the investigators propose a systematic evaluation of the effects of Intralipid, olive oil and normal saline on blood pressure, endothelial function (vascular stiffness), inflammation in normal subjects. A group of obese subjects will be admitted to the Clinical Research Center on 3 occasions. Subjects will receive repeated infusions of Intralipid, ClinOleic, and normal saline at 20 ml/hour for 24 hours.
Endothelial dysfunction can be seen in a variety of vascular related ocular diseases such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy. There is accumulating evidence now that statins may at least partially improve endothelial function in several vascular beds, an effect that is probably independent of the lipid lowering effects of the statins. Consequently, the current study seeks to investigate whether administration of 10 mg rosuvastatin by mouth (p.o.) for 12 weeks can improve the endothelial function in patients with glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. For this purpose, flow mediated vasodilatation of the brachial artery and flicker induced vasodilatation of retinal vessels will be measured at baseline, after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment with rosuvastatin.

The purpose of doing this study is to see if continuous glucose monitoring can help people with type 1 diabetes who are sometimes unable to feel if they have a low blood glucose reading. For this study we will be using the Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitor. We think that your body may not have enough of a certain hormone that usually helps people know when they are going low. If you can keep from going low, we think there will be enough of that hormone to help you recognize the symptoms of a low before it happens.
The primary purpose of this study is to determine if the study medication Methylphenidate (Ritalin) will improve subject's blood-sugar control by improving their motivation more than placebo. The secondary objectives of the study are to determine if daily functioning and quality of life improves with methylphenidate treatment.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells are destroyed, resulting in poor blood sugar control. The purpose of this study is to assess the safety and effectiveness of low molecular weight sulfated dextran (LMW-SD) on post-transplant islet function in people with T1D who have responded to intensive insulin therapy and have received kidney transplants. This study is taking place in Uppsala and Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway.
Hypothesis: there is a high prevalence rate of diabetes, including asymptomatic undiagnosed glucose intolerance, among subjects with coronary heart disease in Hong Kong. A cross-sectional survey is planned to study the rate of undiagnosed diabetes and glucose intolerance among the Chinese patients with coronary heart disease in Hong Kong. The survey results will be important for us to plan the logistics to investigate and manage the potential glucose abnormality of our heart disease patient.
