The Peer-Delivered "Mind. Body. Voice." Program for High School Women (Mbv) - Remote

This study will evaluate the impact of a program (called mind. body. voice. or "mbv") that was collaboratively designed by youth, educators, and researchers, informed by the Body Project (Becker et al., 2013; Stice et al., 2019), Youth Participatory Action Research, an extended co-design process, and previous iterations of the mbv program. The study evaluates the impact of the mbv program on key aspects of mental health and well-being; specifically, body image and disordered eating symptoms, identity and agency, social and self-constructs, physical health and mood at three time points over the course of the 10-week program, which will be offered remotely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will be recruited from high schools and will be randomized to receive the mbv program or an assessment-only control group.

Investigation of PJ vs. Sugar on Glucose Levels in Healthy and Prediabetic Subjects

Pomegranate fruits and products, including juice, tea, wine and extracts are widely consumed and recognized for their health benefits. Pomegranate fruit possesses strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties. The effects of pomegranate on type 2 diabetic (T2DM) conditions have previously been reported. Although 8 oz. of Pom juice (PJ) contains 36.9 g of sugar, 12-week PomJ supplementation did not change plasma advanced glycated end-products, fasting glucose and HbA1C, but reduced lipid peroxidation in T2D subjects. Additionally, acute PJ consumption has been shown to lower postprandial glycemic response of a meal with high glycemic index (GI) and lower fasting blood glucose, and long-term PomJ consumption did not worsen diabetic markers. However, a large knowledge gap still exists regarding the form of sugars in PJ and the hormonal responses to PJ consumption in different physiological conditions. Therefore currently the consumption of PJ is not recommended for individuals with T2DM. This clinical study will focus on the short-term effects of PJ consumption on different diabetic variables to further evaluate the health benefits of PJ for T2DM.

Effectiveness of Respiratory Protection During Simulated Resuscitation: a Prospective Cohort Study

The study hypothesizes that EHMRs with P100 filters will provide superior respiratory protection during simulated CPR compared to disposable N95 FFRs as measured by qualitative fit testing. To this end, the study is a prospective observational cohort to evaluate the effectiveness of disposable FFRs and EHMR during simulated CPR. The primary endpoint will be subject report of detection of the testing agent during a 2 minute session of simulated chest compressions on a mannequin while wearing the respiratory protection that subjects routinely wear during the course of employment.

Trial Comparing Impact of PENG Block on Quality of Recovery Compared to No-block for Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is now the second most common joint replacement surgery in the US due in part to an aging population. Opioid sparing analgesic treatments such as lumbar plexus and femoral nerve blocks are effective but they carry a high risk of undesirable lower limb motor or muscle weakness. Fascia iliaca block, on the other hand, does not consistently provide adequate pain relief. Today, early mobilization, rehabilitation and participation in physical therapy is an integral part of enhanced functional recovery program after THA. Because innervation of the hip joint is complex and preservation of lower extremity motor function is paramount, optimal regional analgesic intervention for THA has yet to be defined. The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block is a novel regional anesthesia technique for providing analgesia after hip fractures and hip arthroplasties. Quality of recovery scores are patient reported outcome measures evaluating recovery after surgery and anesthesia. The quality of recovery-15 (QoR-15) is a validated questionnaire to assess postoperative recovery. The aim of this single center, double blind, randomized controlled trial is to confirm the efficacy of the PENG block for postoperative recovery after primary THA. Methods: The participants will be randomly assigned to either PENG block group or "no Block" group using a random number generator. The patient will be blinded to the group allocated. The primary outcome will be the quality of recovery 15 score (QoR-15). The secondary outcomes will be visual analog scale score of pain postoperatively, opioid requirements in first 24 hours, ambulation distance on postoperative day1 and patient satisfaction. Statistical analysis will be performed using the student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Fisher's exact test as appropriate per sample. A p-value of less than 0.05 will be considered statistically significant.

Physical Activity Intervention for Patients Following Lumbar Spine Surgery

There is a critical need to target physical activity during postoperative management to optimize long-term recovery after lumbar spine surgery. The overall objective of this study is to conduct a two-group randomized control trial (RCT) to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a physical activity telehealth intervention delivered by a physical therapist for improving disability, physical function, pain, and physical activity compared to usual care after spine surgery for a degenerative lumbar condition. The physical activity intervention will include wearable technology and remote physical therapist support to counsel patients on a realistic progression of physical activity (steps per day). The central hypothesis is that this 8-week physical activity intervention performed at two weeks after surgery will be feasible and acceptable. The results of our randomized trial will be used to support a large multi-site clinical trial to test the effectiveness and implementation of this intervention
