Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Urinary Catheter Removal After Radical Prostatectomy

The aim of this study is to determine whether antibiotics prophylaxis at the time of urinary catheter removal decreases the number of symptomatic urinary tract infections in patients after radical prostatectomy. In addition, the investigators aim to determine whether antibiotic prophylaxis is potentially harmful to patients (e.g. adverse reactions from antibiotic use, resistant bacteria in the urine, Clostridium difficile infections etc.). The investigators also aim to identify specific populations that may be at higher risk of developing urinary tract infections with urinary catheter use after radical prostatectomy.

Treatment of Muscle Weakness in Critically Ill Patients

Patients who are admitted to the intensive care unit and require mechanical ventilation frequently develop profound respiratory and limb muscle weakness. Studies show that the development of weakness during the ICU stay results in poor outcomes. Currently there are no treatments for this muscle weakness, but it has been suggested that this weakness might improve with physical therapy. Electrical stimulation is a method to provide direct stimulation to the muscles potentially enhancing function and improving strength. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the quadriceps muscle will improve muscle strength in patients who are critically ill on mechanical ventilation.

This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group, multi-site study has been designed to compare the safety and efficacy of a generic Fluticasone propionate Nasal Spray, 50 mcg (Teva Pharmaceuticals USA) to the FDA Reference Listed Drug, Flonase® (fluticasone propionate) 50 mcg nasal spray (GlaxoSmithKline), in the relief of the signs and symptoms of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis. Additionally, both the test and reference formulations will be tested for superiority against a placebo nasal spray.

Cell-Based Approaches For Modeling and Treating Ataxia-Telangiectasia

This research is being done to better understand the causes of the disease Ataxia-Telangiectasia and, in the longer-term, develop new therapies for the disease using stem cells. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) are a type of cells that can be made in the laboratory from cells in your body, such as blood cells or skin cells (fibroblasts). These stem cells can then be used for research purposes. For example, stem cells can be used to investigate how the mutation in ATM causes the actual symptoms of Ataxia-Telangiectasia. In addition, the stem cells can be used to screen for drugs that could be helpful to treat the disease or to develop new laboratory techniques to correct the mutation that causes Ataxia-Telangiectasia. where the mutation that causes the disease is corrected by the investigators. The stem cells generated in this study will not be used directly for patient therapy and therefore this research does not have a direct benefit to you. However, it will help advance our understanding of the disease and develop future therapies. Patients who enroll in this study will get all of the standard therapy they would get for their tumor whether or not they participate in this study. There is no extra or different therapy given. The study involves a one-time procedure (either blood collection or skin biopsy).

Comparison Of The Embryoscope Time-Lapse System With Standard Embryo Culture

"Embryoscopes," allow for embryo culture to be performed in an automated incubation system under time lapse photography. Manufacturers of these systems (and investigators who have used these systems) claim that the availability of 24-hour time-lapse photographic control improves embryo selection and, therefore, IVF (in vtro fertilization) pregnancy rates. They also claim that use of this system saves laboratory personnel time. This study will randomize approximately 120 patients (60 in each arm) to standard embryo culture or to culture in an Embryoscope. The primary endpoint will be a comparison of time spent by the laboratory personnel with each system. Secondary endpoints will be IVF outcomes.

The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of lanabecestat compared with placebo administered for 104 weeks in the treatment of early Alzheimer´s disease. The study will test the hypothesis that lanabecestat is a disease-modifying treatment for participants with early Alzheimer´s disease, defined as the continuum of participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer´s disease and participants diagnosed with mild dementia of the Alzheimer´s type, as measured by change from baseline on the 13-item Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale - Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog13) score at week 104 in each of the 2 lanabecestat treatment groups compared with placebo.
