This 4-year study will compare how safe and effective an oral investigational medicine is (compared to placebo) in preventing the development of prostate cancer in men that are defined by the study entrance criteria as being at an increased risk for prostate cancer. Study visits to the clinic will occur every 6 months for up to 4 years (10 clinic visits), and a prostate biopsy will be performed at 2 and 4 years of treatment.

RATIONALE: Studying the physical and emotional needs of parents who are caring for children receiving chemotherapy for cancer may help doctors plan effective treatments for the patient that allow for improved quality of life of the patient's family. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying the different physical and emotional needs of parents whose children are undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia either in an outpatient clinic or in the hospital.

When to Start Anti-HIV Drugs in Patients With Opportunistic Infections

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of starting anti-HIV drugs in HIV infected patients who are being treated for opportunistic infections (OIs). This study will follow two patient groups: those who received anti-HIV drugs soon after being diagnosed with an OI and patients with OIs who deferred beginning anti-HIV drugs until after recovering from the OI.

Isotretinoin, Interferon Alfa, and Vitamin E in Treating Patients With Stage III or Stage IV Head and Neck Cancer

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy such as isotretinoin use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of tumor cells. Vitamin E may be able to decrease side effects caused by isotretinoin. It is not yet known whether combining isotretinoin and interferon alfa with vitamin E is more effective than observation in preventing recurrence of head and neck cancer after surgery and/or radiation therapy. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of isotretinoin and interferon alfa combined with vitamin E with that of observation in treating patients who have undergone surgery and/or radiation therapy for stage III or stage IV head and neck cancer.

Anastrozole or Tamoxifen in Treating Postmenopausal Women With Ductal Carcinoma in Situ Who Are Undergoing Lumpectomy and Radiation Therapy

RATIONALE: Estrogen can stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. Tamoxifen may fight breast cancer by blocking the use of estrogen. Anastrozole may fight breast cancer by decreasing estrogen production. It is not yet known whether anastrozole is more effective than tamoxifen in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying anastrozole to see how well it works compared to tamoxifen in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer in postmenopausal women with ductal carcinoma in situ who are undergoing lumpectomy and radiation therapy.

This phase III trial is studying surgery followed by combination chemotherapy to see how well it works in treating children with germ cell tumors that are not located in the head. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug, and giving them after surgery, may kill any remaining tumor cells following surgery. It is not yet known whether combination chemotherapy is effective in decreasing the recurrence of childhood germ cell tumors.

RATIONALE: Androgens can stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells. Estramustine may fight prostate cancer by reducing the production of androgens. Exisulind may stop the growth of prostate cancer by stopping blood flow to the tumor. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining these therapies may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining estramustine with exisulind and docetaxel in treating patients who have metastatic prostate cancer that has not responded to hormone therapy.
